The shadow economy penetrates almost all economic spheres of society. It includes various economic relations that are outside the scope of the law in the areas of production, consumption, exchange and distribution. The obstruction of the shadow economy, which appears to be one of the basic threats to the economic security of the country, is an extremely relevant phenomenon at the present time. The current state of the shadow economy sector in Russia is developing very dynamically, which entails a negative impact on the socio-economic situation of the state. This mainly applies to representatives of small and medium-sized businesses that provide services and produce a variety of goods. The relevance of the chosen topic lies in the fact that now there is a large percentage of shadow income in Russia, while this money could be used for the formation and development of SMEs, especially during times of an acute pandemic, which would minimize economic tension and increase the effectiveness of public finances.

The US economy is one of the richest and most diversified economies in the world and keeps its leadership in the global economy for the past 100 years. The United States is a global leader in computer technology, pharmaceuticals and the manufacture of medical, aerospace and military equipment. And although services make up about 80% of GDP, the US remains the second largest producer of industrial goods in the world and is a leader in research and development. President Donald Trump was elected in November 2016, promising a big gap with his predecessor’s regulatory, tax and trade policies. Therefore, the current socio-economic status of the USA and the possible ways of its development in the future are interesting for studying the impact on other economies, in particular, on the Ukrainian economy and the search for new and optimal ways of developing relations between the United States and Ukraine. Key macroeconomic indicators of the US economy in 2011–2018 are analyzed, demonstrating the influence of Donald Tramp’s new policy on changes in the indicators of the economy, the labor market, trade, etc., as well as possible ways of development in the coming years. The review of key macroeconomic indicators gives grounds for classifying the American economy as healthy one. Rates of GDP growth will remain in the range of 2 to 3%. These rates of growth in the world’s largest economy are callable to ensure a substantial increase in the global activity. But uncertainties in the politics may hinder global growth and have clearly negative impact on the investment growth in developed and developing economies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to ascertain whether weather variables can explain the stock return reaction on the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index by employing a number of macroeconomic indicators as control variables. Design/methodology/approach The authors incorporate the generalized autogressive conditional heteroskeasticity model in methodology for the period August 26, 2009 to May 30, 2014 using daily data. Findings The empirical results indicate that not only do changes in humidity and wind levels seem to affect positively the European stock market but changes in returns oil and gold prices as well. However, the results show that the volatility of the US dollar/Yen exchange rate and ten-year bond value exerts significant negative impact on companies’ stock returns. Originality/value This study adds to the international literature by documenting the impact of weather variables on socially responsible companies.

At the present stage, the problem of socio-economic differentiation of the country's population is becoming quite significant, which is even more aggravated in the context of macroeconomic instability. The crisis and tension in relations with Western countries have a negative impact on the social structure of the population through a negative impact on the country's economy, exacerbating the processes of differentiation, while sustainable development presupposes the achievement of the general welfare of citizens. The main purpose of the article is to study the level of well-being of the population and its differentiation. This goal setting dictates the need to develop not only theoretical approaches to understanding the categories of «welfare» and «socio-economic differentiation of the population», but also in practice - to understand the current situation at the present stage. The study used the comparative method (for comparing macroeconomic indicators), analytical, method of economic and statistical analysis (use of statistical data) and some others. The main result of the study is the substantiation of theoretical approaches to changes in the level of well-being of the population, taking place against the background of large-scale processes of globalization and the existing instability of economic relations both within the country and between states, which leads to imbalances in society and aggravated differentiation of the population by income, which can cause social tension in Russia. The socio-economic development of the country is, first of all, a factor influencing the standard of living of Russians. Through negative crisis moments, the stratification of society occurs, which leads to a decrease in the quality of life. An analysis of the level of well-being of the population is necessary in parallel with the study of indicators reflecting this level, in order to be able to track the depth of the process of differentiation of the population in relation to income.

Purpose This study aims to investigate how culture can either reinforce or attenuate the board efficacy (a key element of corporate governance). Design/methodology/approach The study uses the data from the World Economic Forum (2006-2014) of 69 countries. The data were restricted to 69 countries because Hofstede et al. (2010) provided cultural value data from 111 countries. However, the data from 42 countries were incomplete for Hofstede et al.’s four dimensions. Findings The study is the first to show that more religious diversity has a significant negative impact on stronger board efficacy in evaluating corporate governance practices. The results also indicate that more uncertainty avoidance in a country has a significant negative impact and corporate ethics and auditing standards have a positive impact on board efficacy. Originality/value The study extends Hofstede et al.’s (2010) cultural value by incorporating religious diversity and corporate ethics as cultural variables in explaining board efficacy in corporate governance literature. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund should focus on cultural factors while developing a single set of Corporate Governance Code worldwide.
