ABSTRACT

The anchovy (Stolephorus sp.) in Muara Sungsang estuary South Sumatera are generally caught by stationary liftnet. Morphometric studies are essential to determine the growth form and growth rate of species, which is very much important for proper utilization and management of the population of the species. This study aimed to determine the size structure and growth pattern of the anchovy caught by stationary liftnet. The size structure, length -weight relationship and the condition factor of anchovy were computed. The anchovy samples were taken in July 2013 (750 samples) and September 2013 (1950 samples). Results showed that the population of anchovy was dominated by length frequency distribution of 65 mm during study on July 2013 and 75 mm during study on September 2013. Both populations were dominated by weight frequency distribution 2 gram. The anchovy that caught on September 2013 were more allowable catch than on July 2013. The growth pattern of anchovy was negative allometric. The relative condition factor (Kn) value in September 2013 was higher than in July 2013. It indicated that the environmental conditions at Muara Sungsang estuary are suitable for growth of anchovy’s and still safe from fishing pressure.

Keywords: allometric, anchovy, condition factor, frequency distribution

ABSTRAK

Ikan Teri (Stolephorus sp.) di Muara Sungsang Sumatera Selatan umumnya ditangkap menggunakan bagan tancap. Face to decreasing of high-value commercial fishes’ stocks particularly of small pelagic fish in the central part of FAO fishery area 34, the present study has been carried out. From November 2016 to June 2018, monthly 1041 specimens of Sardinella maderensis were collected from southeastern coastal water of Benin randomly. Standard and Total Length, and weight as well as, the sex data were collected.t-test, z-test and ANOVA one tail test were performed to determine whether there was a significant difference between data. With a ratio of 1:1.5 statistically different from 1:1 (p<0.001), female dominate S. maderensis population in Benin. Negative allometry both for the female (2.92) the male (2.88) and combined sexes (2.90) highly different from the consensus, “b=3” (p<0.001) is remarked. The relative condition factor computed from the allometry shows an average environmental condition for S. maderensis growth. Regarding the shared character of S. maderensis stock in CECAF’s central area, these results are important for the next stock assessment..

This study involved 334 specimens of mullet, Mugil platanus, captured monthly in the estuarine region of Cananéia, São Paulo State, Brazil, from July 1988 to June 1989, and examined for the presence of gill parasites. Parasitological inspections revealed the occurrence of the following groups: Trichodina sp., Monogenoidea, Copepoda, and Hirudinea. Only four mullets were not parasitized. Total weight and total length of all 334 mullet specimens examined were used for adjusting the weight-length relationship curve and calculating the relative condition factor (Kn). The 118 specimens infested with monogenoideans on average had lower weights than expected (Kn < 1.0), and the 81 fish co-infested with Copepoda, Monogenoidea, and Trichodina sp. showed a Kn < 1.0. The other infested and non-infested mullets had a Kn > 1.0. It was possible to infer that gill infestation with monogenoideans alters mullet weight, especially in the presence of co-infestation with Trichodina sp. and copepods.

Abstract: Aim In this paper we present a scientometric analysis aimed at to assess and quantify the contribution of Le Cren’s condition factor and the main ideas advanced by ‘Le Cren, 1951’ to studies on the health of individuals or populations in aquatic environments. Specifically, we addressed the following questions: (i) what are the temporal and spatial citation trends of ‘Le Cren, 1951’?; (ii) Which journals cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ most frequently?; (iii) In which types of aquatic environments and organisms have Le Cren’s condition factor been most commonly applied?; (iv) Which of the main applications addressed in ‘Le Cren, 1951’ have been most frequently used by fisheries scientists?; (v) Which of the methods (i.e., Quételet’s index or body mass index, Fulton’s condition factor, Le Cren’s condition factor, relative weight, residual index and scaled mass index) used to estimate condition factor identified in the papers that cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ have been most frequently used? In addition, the main criticisms of the use of the relative condition factor are discussed. Methods We carried out a scientometric analysis on the papers published from 1951 to December 2015 that cited Le Cren’s article. The papers were obtained from the Thomson Reuters database (ISI Web of Knowledge, apps.isiknowledge.com) in May 2016. Results In total, 1128 papers were assessed. The number of citations increased significantly over time. Most citations occurred in two journals (Journal of Fish Biology and Journal of Applied Ichthyology). Most of papers were carried out in marine environments. In addition, we show that Le Cren's paper has been cited mainly in articles that estimate the condition factor or the weight-length relationship of populations. Finally, we emphasize that the relative condition factor proposed by Le Cren in 1951 is still the main method used to estimate the body condition of an individual or population. Conclusions Le Cren's significant contribution to animal well-being is undeniable, and we emphasize that among the methods identified in the papers that cited ‘Le Cren, 1951’ that estimated body condition, the relative condition factor proposed by Le Cren in 1951 is still the most commonly used method.

Squid (Loligo chinensis) played an important role in small scale fisheries in Banyuasin Coastal Waters, however, the information and publications were limited. This study aimed to estimate the length at first capture (LC50%), the length at first maturity (Lm), growth pattern and condition factor of L. chinensis from Banyuasin Coastal Waters of South Sumatra. The squids were observed for samples in April 2018 and March 2019 using a stationary lift net. During the observation, the squid measurement was conducted on 1179 individuals. The mantle length ranged was 40-210 mm and their body weight ranged was 2-42 gr. The value of LC50%, Lm and ½L∞ were obtained at 103 mm, 147 mm, and 110.5 mm respectively. The analysis results of the length-weight relationship (W = 0.0145L1.4618, R2 = 0.9265 and P < 0.05) showed that their growth pattern was negative allometric (b < 3). The mean relative condition factor (Kn = 1.01) above the critical value limits (K=0.56) confirmed that the environmental condition of Banyuasin Coastal Waters suitable for the L. chinensis growth. However, should be careful with their length size of the squid catch were not feasible in the capture.

Growth Pattern and Condition Factor of Spinner Shark Carcharhinus brevipinna in Southern Nusa Tenggara Waters. The spinner sharks are one of shark commodities that are utilized optimally from the southern of Nusa Tenggara waters, however, the scientific information is still limited. This study aimed to assess the growth pattern and condition factors of the spinner shark, Carcharhinus brevipinna in southern Nusa Tenggara waters. The research was conducted from January to December 2016 using direct recording of the catch data. Information on length, weight and sex determinations were collected by the enumerator. The data was analysed descriptively with the shark condition was determined based on the relative condition factor obtaining from the length-weight relationship. The results showed that growth patterns of the spinner shark, both males and females, were allometrically negative. The relative condition factors of the catch of male sharks were ranged from 0.206 – 2.225 and females from 0.237 – 3.361. The condition factors of spinner sharks were not different between sexes and time of fishing, but they were different in length classes.
