scholarly journals Corrugated Steel Tunnels – Numerical Study Using Finite Element and Analytical Methods

Corrugated metal pipes, fabricated from galvanized steel, are among the most common structures employed to construct, culverts, underpasses, etc. in the world. Furthermore, the merits of this system over the traditional concrete structures are: lightweight structure, great strength relative to their mass, ease of transport and installation, and low cost. However, application of such construction system in Egypt is not commonly used yet, and many technical problems have been observed during and after construction. Consequently, this paper investigates the deformations around buried steel structures, axial forces and bending moments induced in structures due to back-filling and external loading. Furthermore, two case studies of buried steel projects have been presented in this paper. The first case study has been simulated using finite element method while the second one has been analyzed using analytical methods given in the literature and well-known codes of practice. Thus, an elaborated comparative study has been performed between finite element results and those obtained from analytical methods.

AbstractArc brazing with low-melting copper-based filler materials, which has long been established and standardized in the thin sheet sector, offers numerous advantages in the processing of predominantly electrolytically galvanized steel structures. In steel and shipbuilding, on the other hand, equipment parts made of thick steel sheets are hot-dip galvanized at low cost and with good corrosion-inhibiting properties. Quality welding of such constructions is not possible without special precautions such as removing the zinc layer and subsequent recoating. With regard to greater plate thicknesses, arc brazing was analyzed in these investigations as an alternative joining method with regard to its suitability for practical use. Within the scope of the investigations, CuSi3Mn, CuMn12Ni2, and four different aluminum bronzes were examined on different sheet surface conditions with regard to the geometrical and production parameters. This was carried out by build-up and connection brazing, executed as butt and cross joints. Quasi-static tensile tests and fatigue tests were used to assess the strength behavior. In addition, metallographic analyses are carried out as well as hardness tests. The suitability for multi-layer brazing and the tendency to distortion were also investigated, as well as the behavior of arc brazed joints under corrosive conditions.

As the most potential member in the textile composite material, stitched textile composites have already been paid a lot attention. By the simply technology form and relatively low cost, stitched composites had attracted many domestic and foreign researchers, and were gradually used in various engineering practice. This paper using 3D micro-finite element method researches the mechanical behavior and performance of stitched composites, establishing a 3D micro-finite element model for the stitched composites under the improved locking suture way. Through analysis, it shows that each material’s stress distribution characteristics under external loading and finds that the results of this paper’s finite element data results matching well with previous studies’ results, proving the feasibility of this study, so it can be used for forecasting the mechanical properties of a variety of practical stitched composites.

Optimized performance of joint is categorized by its “structural integrity” and “sealing capability”. In literature, limited data are available regarding the performance of gasketed bolted flanged joint under combined internal and external loading; hence an optimized joint performance cannot be addressed. In this paper, a detailed three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis of bolted gasketed flange joint is performed, to study its performance under combined internal (pressure) and external (axial and bending) load. Results of the finite element analysis are compared with the experimental results available in literature providing the validation of the numerical approach developed.

Abstract This paper presents two simplified analytical methods to analyze lock gates submitted to two different accidental loads. The case of an impact involving a vessel is first investigated. In this situation, the resistance of the struck gate is evaluated by assuming a local and a global deforming mode. The super-element method is used in the first case, while an equivalent beam model is simultaneously introduced to capture the overall bending motion of the structure. The second accidental load considered in this paper is the seismic action, for which an analytical method is presented to evaluate the total hydrodynamic pressure applied on a lock gate during an earthquake, due account being taken of the fluid-structure interaction. For each of these two actions, numerical validations are presented and the analytical results are compared to finite-element solutions.

The Joint Actinide Shock Physics Experimental Research (JASPER) facility utilizes a two-stage light gas gun to conduct equation of state experiments. The gun has a launch tube bore diameter of 28 mm, and is capable of launching projectiles at a velocity of 7.5 km/s using compressed hydrogen as a propellant. A numerical study is conducted to determine the effects that launch tube exit geometry changes have on attitude of the projectile in flight. A comparison of two launch tube exit geometries is considered. The first case is standard muzzle geometry where the wall of the bore and the outer surface of the launch tube form a right angle. The second case includes a beveled transition from the wall of the bore to the outer surface of the launch tube. An h-adaptive, Petrov-Galerkin finite element method is employed to model the axisymmetric compressible flow equations. Numerical solutions indicate that pressure variations occur on the back face of the projectile from case to case.

The paper is treating the strength analysis of the main deck structure of an inland navigation catamaran for 30 passengers. The main deck should have high stiffness and high strength to resist to external loading and endure high stresses from combined bending and torsion loads. Different materials for sandwich structure of the deck have been analysed by using the Finite Element Method in order to determine the solution which accomplish better designing criteria regarding allowable stress and deformations and total weight.

The paper deals with methods of equivalence of boundary conditions in finite element models that are based on finite element model updating technique. The proposed methods are based on the determination of the stiffness parameters in the section plate or region, where the boundary condition or the removed part of the model is replaced by the bushing connector. Two methods for determining its elastic properties are described. In the first case, the stiffness coefficients are determined by a series of static finite element analyses that are used to obtain the response of the removed part to the six basic types of loads. The second method is a combination of experimental and numerical approaches. The natural frequencies obtained by the measurement are used in finite element (FE) optimization, in which the response of the model is tuned by changing the stiffness coefficients of the bushing. Both methods provide a good estimate of the stiffness at the region where the model is replaced by an equivalent boundary condition. This increases the accuracy of the numerical model and also saves computational time and capacity due to element reduction.

In order to process heterotype hole of workpiece precisely, an open abrasive flow polish machine is designed, and the optimization design of machine frame is done for low cost. Firstly, basing on the parameters designed with traditional ways, three-dimensional force model is set up with the soft of SolidWorks. Secondly, the statics and modal analysis for machine body have been done in Finite element methods (FEM), and then the optimization analysis of machine frame has been done. At last, the model of rebuild machine frame has been built. Result shows that the deformation angle value of machine frame increased from 0.72′ to 1.001′, the natural frequency of the machine decreased from 75.549 Hz to 62.262 Hz, the weight of machine decreased by 74.178 Kg after optimization. It meets the strength, stiffness and angel stiffness requirement of machine, reduces the weight and cost of machine.
