Agriculture productivity is the main factor for improving economic status of India. Reduction in production rate is mainly due to various diseases in plants. Identification of plant disease in early stage is the main challenge for improving the production rate as well as economic status. This paper presents automatic disease detection in cotton crop for three types of diseases Alternaria Leaf Spot Fungal Disease (ALSFD), Grey Mildew Cotton Disease (GMCD), and Rust Foliar Fungal Disease (RFFD). The K-means clustering algorithm is used for disease segmentation for cotton leaf. The diseased cluster is segmented into three clusters. From cluster 2 the features Mean , Contrast, Energy, Correlation, Standard Deviation, Variance , Entropy, and Kurtosis are extracted. The extracted features for 30 samples are given to Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers for disease classification. The performance of these classifiers are compared. The ALSF disease is classified 77.4% for ANN and 84.3% for SVM, GMC disease is 87.8% for ANN and 98.7% in SVM, RFF disease is 90.1%for ANN and 93.2% for SVM. The overall average accuracy of ANN classifier is 85.1% for three diseases and overall average accuracy for SVM is 92.06% for three diseases. It is clearly observed from the analysis SVM classifier gives accurate disease detection compared to ANN.

In analog circuit, the component parameters have tolerances and the fault component parameters present a wide distribution, which brings obstacle to classification diagnosis. To tackle this problem, this article proposes a soft fault diagnosis method combining the improved barnacles mating optimizer(BMO) algorithm with the support vector machine (SVM) classifier, which can achieve the minimum redundancy and maximum relevance for feature dimension reduction with fuzzy mutual information. To be concrete, first, the improved barnacles mating optimizer algorithm is used to optimize the parameters for learning and classification. We adopt six test functions that are on three data sets from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository to test the performance of SVM classifier with five different optimization algorithms. The results show that the SVM classifier combined with the improved barnacles mating optimizer algorithm is characterized with high accuracy in classification. Second, fuzzy mutual information, enhanced minimum redundancy, and maximum relevance principle are applied to reduce the dimension of the feature vector. Finally, a circuit experiment is carried out to verify that the proposed method can achieve fault classification effectively when the fault parameters are both fixed and distributed. The accuracy of the proposed fault diagnosis method is 92.9% when the fault parameters are distributed, which is 1.8% higher than other classifiers on average. When the fault parameters are fixed, the accuracy rate is 99.07%, which is 0.7% higher than other classifiers on average.

This study investigates a novel method for roller bearing fault diagnosis based on local characteristic-scale decomposition (LCD) energy entropy, together with a support vector machine designed using an Artificial Chemical Reaction Optimisation Algorithm, referred to as an ACROA-SVM. First, the original acceleration vibration signals are decomposed into intrinsic scale components (ISCs). Second, the concept of LCD energy entropy is introduced. Third, the energy features extracted from a number of ISCs that contain the most dominant fault information serve as input vectors for the support vector machine classifier. Finally, the ACROA-SVM classifier is proposed to recognize the faulty roller bearing pattern. The analysis of roller bearing signals with inner-race and outer-race faults shows that the diagnostic approach based on the ACROA-SVM and using LCD to extract the energy levels of the various frequency bands as features can identify roller bearing fault patterns accurately and effectively. The proposed method is superior to approaches based on Empirical Mode Decomposition method and requires less time.

This paper presents an effective approach for aero-engine fault diagnosis with focus on rub-impact, through combination of improved local discriminant bases (LDB) with support vector machine (SVM). The improved LDB algorithm, using both the normalized energy difference and the relative entropy as quantification measures, is applied to choose the optimal set of orthogonal subspaces for wavelet packet transform- (WPT-) based signal decomposition. Then two optimal sets of orthogonal subspaces have been obtained and the energy features extracted from those subspaces appearing in both sets will be selected as input to a SVM classifier to diagnose aero-engine faults. Experiment studies conducted on an aero-engine rub-impact test system have verified the effectiveness of the proposed approach for classifying working conditions of aero-engines.

Many classification problems contain shape information from input features, such as monotonic, convex, and concave. In this research, we propose a new classifier, called Shape-Restricted Support Vector Machine (SR-SVM), which takes the component-wise shape information to enhance classification accuracy. There exists vast research literature on monotonic classification covering monotonic or ordinal shapes. Our proposed classifier extends to handle convex and concave types of features, and combinations of these types. While standard SVM uses linear separating hyperplanes, our novel SR-SVM essentially constructs non-parametric and nonlinear separating planes subject to component-wise shape restrictions. We formulate SR-SVM classifier as a convex optimization problem and solve it using an active-set algorithm. The approach applies basis function expansions on the input and effectively utilizes the standard SVM solver. We illustrate our methodology using simulation and real world examples, and show that SR-SVM improves the classification performance with additional shape information of input.

Health informatics is one of the main branch of engineering which provides a solution to a variety of problems like delayed, missed or incorrect diagnoses with the help of computational techniques. With the help of technologies such as bio-computing, health informatics, the disaster impacts on both human health and biological factors can be reduced to a large extend. Using these computational technologies, the country’s economy can also get boosted up and due to increased disease-causing pathogens, which directly impact the human health system. In this research work, a different type of sugarcane disease is detected and classified because manual identification is difficult and time-consuming. So, the farmers couldn’t find a better solution, than on the whole, they go for stubble burning, which is an alarming issue both on human and environmental wellness. The burning of bagasse causes bagassois, an interstitial lung disease that affects the tissues present in the lung through the air sacs. So, this sugarcane disease detection needs to be done early to avoid various health and environmental issues. The proposed work consists of the detection of four types of sugarcane leaf disease directly from the field. The sequence of methods is capturing images with WSN nodes, pre-processing with image enhancement and noise removal (IENR), segmentation with Fuzzy membership function and clustering (FMFC), feature extraction using Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix Vector (GLCMV) and classification using Support Vector Machine (SVM). With the help of the effective proposed method, the highest parameters like precision, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for sugarcane leaf disease have been obtained. Based on the successful implementation process, the accuracy stated for the four sugarcane diseases along with the execution time is given below as Smut disease (87.12, 1.01 sec), Rust disease (90.23, 1.02 sec), Grassy Shoot disease (95.34, 1.047 sec), Red Rot disease (95.51, 1.04 sec).

AbstractCloud particles have different shapes in the atmosphere. Research on cloud particle shapes plays an important role in analyzing the growth of ice crystals and the cloud microphysics. To achieve an accurate and efficient classification algorithm on ice crystal images, this study uses image-based morphological processing and principal component analysis, to extract features of images and apply intelligent classification algorithms for the Cloud Particle Imager (CPI). Currently, there are mainly two types of ice-crystal classification methods: one is the mode parameterization scheme, and the other is the artificial intelligence model. Combined with data feature extraction, the dataset was tested on ten types of classifiers, and the highest average accuracy was 99.07%. The fastest processing speed of the real-time data processing test was 2,000 images/s. In actual application, the algorithm should consider the processing speed, because the images are in the order of millions. Therefore, a support vector machine (SVM) classifier was used in this study. The SVM-based optimization algorithm can classify ice crystals into nine classes with an average accuracy of 95%, blurred frame accuracy of 100%, with a processing speed of 2,000 images/s. This method has a relatively high accuracy and faster classification processing speed than the classic neural network model. The new method could be also applied in physical parameter analysis of cloud microphysics.

A feature selection method based on mutual information and support vector machine (SVM) is proposed in order to eliminate redundant feature and improve classification accuracy. First, local correlation between features and overall correlation is calculated by mutual information. The correlation reflects the information inclusion relationship between features, so the features are evaluated and redundant features are eliminated with analyzing the correlation. Subsequently, the concept of mean impact value (MIV) is defined and the influence degree of input variables on output variables for SVM network based on MIV is calculated. The importance weights of the features described with MIV are sorted by descending order. Finally, the SVM classifier is used to implement feature selection according to the classification accuracy of feature combination which takes MIV order of feature as a reference. The simulation experiments are carried out with three standard data sets of UCI, and the results show that this method can not only effectively reduce the feature dimension and high classification accuracy, but also ensure good robustness.

Most road accidents occur due to human fatigue, inattention, or drowsiness. Recently, machine learning technology has been successfully applied to identifying driving styles and recognizing unsafe behaviors starting from in-vehicle sensors signals such as vehicle and engine speed, throttle position, and engine load. In this work, we investigated the fusion of different external sensors, such as a gyroscope and a magnetometer, with in-vehicle sensors, to increase machine learning identification of unsafe driver behavior. Starting from those signals, we computed a set of features capable to accurately describe the behavior of the driver. A support vector machine and an artificial neural network were then trained and tested using several features calculated over more than 200 km of travel. The ground truth used to evaluate classification performances was obtained by means of an objective methodology based on the relationship between speed, and lateral and longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle. The classification results showed an average accuracy of about 88% using the SVM classifier and of about 90% using the neural network demonstrating the potential capability of the proposed methodology to identify unsafe driver behaviors.
