Induction motors are widely used prime movers for rotating machinery in most of the industrial applications. Reliability of the induction motors plays a significant role in reduction in downtime of the machinery. Proper diagnostic procedures are to be followed to assess the condition of the motor. Based on the literature, it is found that the vibration analysis is mostly used for diagnosis of rotating systems. However, industrial experiences reveal that potential motor failures have been observed very frequently even with proper vibration based condition monitoring. Therefore, this paper focuses on further investigations of whether the vibration monitoring stand alone can properly diagnose the presence of faults such as eccentricity in an induction motor or any other alternative technique should be employed in addition to the vibration monitoring for better diagnosis. In this paper, experimental investigations have been carried out to monitor the changes in the vibration and current spectrum of an eccentric motor in its decoupled and coupled state with a healthy rotor system.

Induction motors are widely used from home to industrial applications. Speed of induction motor plays important role, so to control the speed of induction motor various techniques are adopted and one of these techniques is V/F control, which is adopted in this paper. This technique helps to control the speed in open control system in RPM. Moreover, Control is designed in LabVIEW, it is quite helpful to develop the circuit graphically and code is automatically written in the background to run on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The aim of this research is to study the impacts on diverse parameters during speed control of three phase induction machine with manipulation of GPIC. Solar technology is used as input source to drive the General-Purpose Inverter Controller (GPIC). Apart of this, impacts of modulation index and carrier frequency influencing the active, reactive and apparent power, temperature and power quality and current overshoot is analysed. MATLAB/Simulink and LabVIEW tools are used for simulation and results along with GPIC, Induction motor and solar panel as hardware.

Induction motors (IMs) play an essential role in the field of various industrial applications. Long-time service and tough working situations make IMs become prone to a broken rotor bar (BRB) that is one of the major causes of IMs faults. Hence, the continuous condition monitoring of BRB faults demands a computationally efficient and accurate signal diagnosis technique. The advantage of high reliability and wide applicability in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis based on vibration signature analysis results in an improved cyclic modulation spectrum (CMS), which is one of the cyclic spectral analysis algorithms. CMS is proposed in this paper for the detection and identification of BRB faults in IMs at a steady-state operation based on a vibration signature analysis. The application of CMS is based on the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and the improved CMS approach is attributed to the optimization of STFT. The optimal window is selected to improve the accuracy for identifying the BRB fault types and severities. The appropriate window length and step size are optimized based on the selected window function to receive a better calculation benefit through simulation and experimental analysis. Compared to other estimators, the improved CMS method provides better fault detectability results by analyzing vertical vibration signatures of a healthy motor, and damaged motors with 1 BRB and 2 BRBs under 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% load conditions. Both synthetic and experimental investigations demonstrate the proposed methodology can significantly reduce computational costs and identify the BRB fault types and severities effectively.

Bearing is an induction motor component that helps the rotor to move freely, in industrial applications it is important to maintain bearing performance in induction motors. In its use, bearing damage is one of the biggest types of damage that is often found in induction motors. Bearing damage can lead to increased vibration, increased noise, increased working temperature, and decreased efficiency. Efficiency reduction can be used as information on the condition of the motor so that this information can be used to detect damage before more serious damage occurs. This research discusses the stator current analysis method and the efficiency of damage to the motor through two harmonic amplitude ratios equipped with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm in detecting damage to the outer race bearing. It is hoped that this efficiency can be used as an evaluation of the extent to which motor energy waste occurs before more severe damage. The efficiency results on the damage to the outer race bearing using the FFT method get the highest efficiency value of 1.47 and the lowest value of 0.66.

In past, several analytical models has been developed to establish the occurrence of various induction motor faults. Some of the primarily occurring faults in induction motor being; bearing and stator winding faults and to a smaller extent the other types such as rotor and eccentricity. Though there has been a lot of research work done in detection and diagnosis, still the recognition of eccentricity fault in induction motors, specifically deciding the precise degree of eccentricity is a challenging task for the researchers. In this paper, a novel model-based approach has been developed for the detection of exact type and degree of eccentricity fault present in the motor. Simulation of induction motor for both healthy and eccentricity fault has been carried out using the Modified Winding Function (MWF) approach. A procedure has been developed for estimating the eccentricity fault from simulation model. Also, a metaheuristic nature inspired algorithm, viz. Firefly Algorithm (FA) has been used for the optimization of results obtained from simulation model. The results obtained from experimental investigations are close to that obtained from simulations, confirming the applicability of used model and simulation approach to find the exact degree of eccentricity defect.

This paper presents the practical results of the design analysis, commissioning, identification, sensor calibration, and tuning of an active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system for a laboratory gas blower. The presented step-by-step procedures, including modeling and disturbance analysis for different design choices, are necessary to reach the full potential of the prototype in research and industrial applications. The key results include estimation of radial and axial disturbance forces caused by the permanent magnet (PM) rotor and a discussion on differences between the unbalance forces resulting from the PM motor and the induction motor in the AMB rotor system.

During the operation of electric induction motors used to drive passenger elevators, electro-mechanical transient processes occur, which can cause unacceptable dynamic loads and vibrations. In this regard, research is needed both at the design stage and for operating elevator systems to determine the arising impact currents and torques, in order to propose solutions for their limitation within pre-set limits. Paper deals with starting processes in a two-speed induction motor drive of a passenger elevator. The equations for the voltages of the induction motor are presented in relative units in a coordinate system rotating at a synchronous speed. The values have been obtained for the torques, the rotational frequencies and the currents when starting at a high speed and passing from high to low speed.

Although permanent magnet couplings (PMCs) have been under research for many years and have found successful industrial applications, this is still a technology under development. Accurate parameter determination is of significance for performance analysis and critical decisions on PMC design. However, the determination can often lead to an unacceptable increase in computation, especially when finite elements (FE) are used. The study aims to develop an FE model that is used for the structural design of a standard-disc type PMC for optimal torque. For the quick and accurate design, an integration optimal solution of the response surface methodology (RSM) and the Taguchi’s method was proposed. To verify the simulation, a series of experimental investigations were conducted on a self-developed testing platform. Furthermore, for a minimum set of FE analyses (FEA), a quantitative indicator called contribution rate, which can reflect effect level of structure parameters on the torque, was given based on the Taguchi method. Apart from this, the orthogonal matrix was used for the reduction of the FE calculation. Based on the contribution rate, the response surface methodology was adopted for the optimal torque determination with no increase in the PM volume. According to the optimization results, a fitting formula, which considers the contribution rates of the optimization variables, was presented. The results suggest that the FE simulations agree very well with the experiments, and the fitting formula can be used in the PMC design.

Prognostics and health management of computer hard disk drives is beneficial from two different angles: it can help computer users plan for timely replacement of HDDs before they catastrophically fail and cause serious data loss; it can also help product recover facilities reuse hard disks recovered from the end-of-life computers for building refurbished computers. This paper presents a HDD health assessment method using Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) attributes. It also presents the state-of-the art results in monitoring the condition of hard disks and offers future directions for distributed hard disk monitoring.
