Background and objects: Patients with diabetes mellitus are at high risk of cardiovascular events because of abnormal lipid status. Dyslipidemia is common in diabetes mellitus and is associated with cardiovascular complications. Early diagnosis and treatment is the main cornerstone in the prevention of its multiple complications. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of abnormal lipid prole levels. Materials and Method: The study population was made up of Eighty-ve (85) already diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients and Ninety-two (92) with an age range of 28 to 70 years, who come from routine health, follow up at various tertiary hospitals in Erode. The samples were analyzed using the chemical analyzer COBAS INTEGRA 400. Results and Conclusion: Dyslipidemia was found in 63.52% in type2 diabetes patients and 43.47% in non-diabetic patients. High TG, high LDL-C, high TC and low HDL-C exhibited an increasing trend in the proportion of patients with dyslipidemia. The following risk factors namely female sex, age above 50- years, BMI (overweight and obese), poor glycemic control, central obesity and physical inactivity were associated with diabetic dyslipidemia. This study presents some interesting and novel ndings which may be very important in the care and management of patients with type-2 diabetes.

Background And Objectives: Previous studies have shown that hematological alterations are a common nding in patients with diabetes. To aim of our study was to explore the hematological indices in type 2 diabetic patients compared with non-diabetic individual. Establish the role of haematological parameters as an early prevention strategy. Materialand Method: Two hundred and forty-six subjects were recruited for this study, one hundred and fourteen with type 2 diabetes and One hundred and thirty-two non-diabetes, were evaluated for haematological parameters using hematologic analyzer. All the information's about the disease was collected with the knowledge of the patients form the concern hospital and laboratory. Results And Conclusions: Results were compared with the same measurements in 132 subjects without diabetes mellitus. The haematological prole associated with Type2 diabetic patients signicantly reduced Hb, RBCs, PCV and MCV than Non diabetes. Increased MCHC and WBCs were noted in Type2 diabetes. Our ndings suggest the need of screening for routine hematological tests in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Background: We sought to establish the in-shoe plantar pressure distribution during normal level walking in type 2 diabetic patients of Chinese, Indian, and Malay descent without clinical evidence of peripheral neuropathy. Methods: Thirty-five patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without loss of tactile sensation and foot deformities and 38 nondiabetic individuals in a control group had in-shoe plantar pressures collected. Maximum peak pressure and peak pressure-time integral of each foot were analyzed as separate variables and were masked into 13 areas. Differences in pressure variables were assessed by analysis of covariance, adjusting for relevant covariates at the 95% confidence interval. Results: No significant differences were noted in maximum peak pressures after adjusting for sex, race, age, height, and body mass. However, patients with diabetes mellitus had significantly higher mean ± SD pressure-time integrals at the right whole foot (309.50 ± 144.17 kPa versus 224.06 ± 141.70 kPa, P < .05) and first metatarsal (198.65 ± 138.27 kPa versus 121.54 ± 135.91 kPa, P < .05) masked areas than did those in the control group after adjustment. Conclusions: Patients without clinical observable signs of foot deformity (implying absence of motor neuropathy) and sensory neuropathy had similar in-shoe maximum peak pressures as controls. This finding supported the notion that either component of neuropathy needs to be present before plantar pressures are elevated. Patients with diabetes mellitus demonstrated greater pressure-time integrals, implying that this variable might be the first clinical sign observable even before peripheral neuropathy could be tested. Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate AI-based models in identifying predictors of cardiovascular events and risk predtion in patients with diabetes mellitus type2. Condition being studied: T2DM patients have an increased risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications, lead to decreased quality of life and mortality. Considering the significance of cardiovascular complications in these patients, prediction of such events would be important. Different traditional statistical methods(such as regression) and new AI-besed algorithms are used to predict these complications in diabetic patients.

Diabetes mellitus is recognized as a serious global health problem and frequently associated with disabling and lifethreatening complications related to some modifiable risk factors. One of the modifiable factors is dyslipidemia. This study addressed the dyslipidemic status of 124 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) attending the outpatient department, Ibrahim General Hospital and Diabetic Care and Education Center Dhanmondi, Dhaka during the period from January to June 2010. The diagnosed diabetic subjects were interviewed and the biochemical investigation data were collected from record review. Three fourth of the respondents were female and majority (24.2%) of them were 46 to 50 years of age. Most of the respondents were graduates having neuclear families. The mean total cholesterol and triglyceride were found 181.7±43.0 mg/dl and 161.0±112.5 mg/dl respectively. According to NCEP ATP III (2001), 59.7% of the participants had high level of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and only 18% had desired level of high density lipoproteins (HDL). The mean (±SD) of LDL and HDL were 109.8±37.0 mg/dl and 41.0±7.9 mg/dl respectively. Men had elevated level of mean TG with wide variation (185.98±179.56 mg/dl) than women (151.63±72.16 mg/dl). The mean (±SD) of HDL was found lower in men than women (35.8 ± 6.3 vs. 42.9 ± 7.5 mg/dl, p< 0.05) though not significant. The study revealed that dyslipidemia (high TC, TG, LDL and low HDL) was prevalent among the T2DM subjects, which needs attention of equal importance to maintain within normal limit as with the control of hyperglycemia and hypertension. Background/Aim. Exercise is a well recognized model of oxidative stress and, also, an important tool in diabetes management. The aim of our study was to evaluate oxidative stress in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and to determine influence of acute exercise training on the investigated parameters. Methods. To evaluate oxidative stress in the patients, we determinated following parameters: triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), oxidized LDL cholesterol (Ox LDL), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) which were measured at rest and immediately after the acute bout of cardiopulmonary exercise cycle-ergometer test. Results. In basal condition, diabetic patients compared to controls have significant higher values of TG (3.12 ? 1.09 vs 1.74 ? 0.9 mmol/L, p < 0.01), Ox LDL (84.73 ? 16.90 vs 79.00 ? 29.26 mmol/L, p < 0.05) and SOD enzyme activity (913.38 ? 120.36 vs 877.14 ? 153.18 U/g Hb, p < 0.05). During the acute exercise test, there was significant increase of Ox LDL in both the study patients (from 84.73 ? 16.90 to 92.33 ? 23.29 mmol/L, p < 0.05) and in the control group (from 79.00 ? 29.26 to 89.30 ? 29.07 mmol/L, p < 0.05). SOD activity was significantly increased in both groups during exercise, in diabetic patients from 913.38 ? 120.36 to 921.50 ? 130.03 U/gHb, p < 0.05, and in the controls from 877.14 ? 153.18 to 895.00 ? 193.49, U/gHb, p < 0.05. GSH-Px activity was significantly increased only in the diabetic patients after the acute exercise (from 45.04 ? 11.19 to 51.81 ? 15.07 U/gHb, p < 0.01), but not in the controls (from 44.63 ? 13.73 to 43.97 ? 25.97 U/gHb, p = ns). PAI significantly decreased during the exercise test, only in the healthy subjects (from 2.60 ? 0.35 to 2.22 ? 0.65, p < 0.05). Type 2 diabetic patients with complications had only significant increase in GSH-Px activity (from 47.10 ? 7.37 to 54.52 ? 11.97 U/gHb, p < 0.01). Conclusion. Elevated Ox LDL, SOD and GSH-Px levels are associated with acute exercise in type 2 diabetic patients. We suggest that it could be a compensatory mechanism to preventing free radicals tissue damage. We hypothesize that a physical training program induces an enhance of muscular and liver antioxidant enzymes activity and reduces oxidative stress. Further studies are needed to explore the relationship between exercise and antioxidant system in diabetic patients with and without complications.

The Influence of Type And Duration of Cardiovascular Complications On Antioxidative Parameter Values In Type 2 Diabetic Patients It is well established that type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with highly increased risk of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and total mortality. CVD is the leading cause of death of people with diabetes. The aim of our study was to test the effect of type and duration of cardiovascular complications on antioxidant parameter values: superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and total antioxidant status in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and manifested cardiovascular complications. Out of 100 subjects included in the study, 69 subjects were type 2 diabetic patients with cardiovascular complications and 31 age-matched controls. Statistical data processing revealed significantly lower antioxidant defense (p<0.001) in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular complications manifested as coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension (HTA) and myocardial infarction experienced in the previous 8 years (AMI). The type 2 diabetics with longer history of diabetes and coronary artery disease had higher fasting glucose values, higher GR activity, but lower TAS and SOD activity (p<0.05). Fasting glucose levels were in negative correlation with SOD and GPx activities in the subgroups of diabetics with severe cardiovascular complications (CAD+AMI, CAD+AMI+ HTA) (p<0.05).

Background: We sought to determine the frequency of toenail onychomycosis in diabetic patients, to identify the causative agents, and to evaluate the epidemiologic risk factors. Methods: Data regarding patients’ diabetic characteristics were recorded by the attending internal medicine clinician. Clinical examinations of patients’ toenails were performed by a dermatologist, and specimens were collected from the nails to establish the onycomycotic abnormality. All of the specimens were analyzed by direct microscopy and culture. Results: Of 321 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, clinical onychomycosis was diagnosed in 162; 41 of those diagnoses were confirmed mycologically. Of the isolated fungi, 23 were yeasts and 18 were dermatophytes. Significant correlations were found between the frequency of onychomycosis and retinopathy, neuropathy, obesity, family history, and duration of diabetes. However, no correlation was found with sex, age, educational level, occupation, area of residence, levels of hemoglobin A1c and fasting blood glucose, and nephropathy. The most frequently isolated agents from clinical specimens were yeasts. Conclusions: Long-term control of glycemia to prevent chronic complications and obesity and to promote education about the importance of foot and nail care should be essential components in preventing onychomycosis and its potential complications, such as secondary foot lesions, in patients with diabetes mellitus. BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus is common in the Indian population and awareness regarding the disease and its complications is low among the patients with diabetes. There is lack of studies regarding awareness of complications of diabetes among type 2 diabetic patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the awareness of diabetic complications among type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS This is an institutional based observational study. The sample comprised of 150 adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who underwent treatment in the Department of Medicine, Medical College Kottayam and the patient’s age ranged from 18 - 77 years. RESULTS Majority of patients were in the age group 38 to 57 and the sample comprised of 56 % males and 44 % female patients. Out of 150 patients involved in the study, 120 patients (80 %) were aware of the complications of diabetes mellitus. Among the male patients, 70 (83.33 %) and among females, 50 (75.75 %) were aware of the complications in diabetes. In the study sample, 92 (61.33 %) were aware of the foot problems, 120 patients (80 %) were aware of renal complications, 91 patients were aware regarding eye problems of diabetes, 38 (25.33 %) regarding development of hypertension, 62 (41.33 %) regarding heart attack, 42 (28 %) patients were aware regarding development of stroke and 78 patients (52 %) had awareness regarding occurrence of recurrent infections. CONCLUSIONS Awareness regarding diabetes and its complications is fairly good among the diabetic patients in Kerala. Awareness regarding all complications of diabetes was higher among males than females. Providing awareness to type 2 diabetic patients by various educational programs may be of further help to prevent complications and to decrease the mortality and morbidity in type 2 diabetes patients.
