Two laterites samples known for their deficiency in road construction were used to assess the efficacy of Class C fly ash in improving their engineering properties. The two samples were taken from Danbare and Dausayi localities within Kano Metropolis and the fly ash was sourced from the Nigerian Coal Corporation, Enugu. Preliminary tests on the two samples confirmed their deficiency for use in road construction. The processed fly ash was blended with the laterite samples at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18%. Hence, the treated soil samples were tested for plasticity, compaction and strength properties. Results obtained revealed reduction in plasticity properties as the fly ash contents increased. Similarly, Maximum Dry Density (MDD) decreased as the fly ash content increased while the Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) of the treated soils increased for the two samples. Peak CBR values of 16 and 35% were obtained at 9 and 15% fly ash contents for samples 1 and 2, respectively. The unconfined compression tests showed considerable improvement in strength properties higher than the values of the natural soils. The peak 7 days strength of 630 and 1410 kN/m2 were observed at 12% and 15% fly ash content for samples 1 and 2, respectively.

In the present study, effect of various molarities of NaOH, various fly ash content and alkaline activator solution (AAS) / fly ash(FA) ratios on the workability of geopolymer concrete(GPC) are studied along with the effect of use of Na2SiO3/NaOH and K2SiO3/KOH as alkaline activator solutions and various fly ash contents on the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete mixes. Observations shows that both Na2SiO3/NaOH and K2SiO3/KOH gives better performance for different molar, AAS/FA and oxide ratios. Class C GPC has better performance than Class F GPC. It was found that the increase in molarity decreases workability of geopolymer concrete. Also, the workability increases with increase in fly ash (FA) content and AAS/FA ratio in geopolymer concrete. Compressive and split tensile strengths decrease with increase in fly ash content.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to determine the optimum soil to fly ash mix ratio to enhance the engineering properties of clayey sand that can potentially be used as a road subgrade. Grain size distribution and Atterberg limits tests were conducted to classify the soil and to study the effects of the fly ash on the soil plasticity. The Proctor test was conducted to determine the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of soil-fly-ash mixtures with arbitrarily selected 0%, 40%, 50%, and 60% fly ash content. A higher percentage was selected to find the highest optimum fly ash content to maximize the beneficial use. Unconfined compression and consolidation tests were conducted with air-dry arbitrarily selected curing periods of 0, 2, 8, and 28 days to determine the strength and to predict the settlement and the volume change behavior. It can be concluded from the trend analysis that a fly ash content range of 32–50% appeared to be optimum that is expected to perform better as subgrade materials for a curing period range of 16–19 days. However, experimental data showed a fly ash content of 50% was the optimum for a curing period of 8 days. The settlement and the volume change behavior improved at least 44% with increased fly ash content.

Industrialization is the key to the growth of any country’s economy. However, on the other hand, the production of industrial waste is increasing enormously, which adversely impacts the environment and natural resources. Red mud is also a widespread industrial waste produced during aluminium extraction from bauxite ore in Bayer’s process. Red mud is a highly alkaline material that creates a massive environmental threat in nature. To reduce the impact of this solid waste material, the ideal method is to use it in construction works with appropriate stabilization. This study envisages the strength properties of red mud with fly ash and cement to use it as a road construction material in the subgrade. The influence of fly ash and cement on improving the strength properties of red mud was studied in detail by replacing red mud with 10%, 20%, and 30% with fly ash and 1%, 3%, and 5% of cement to its dry weight. The CBR (California bearing ratio) value was increased from 1.58% to 11.6% by stabilizing red mud with fly ash and cement, which can be used as a road construction material. The UCS (unconfined compressive strength) of red mud was increased from 825 kPa to 2340 kPa upon curing for 28 days with the right mix of fly ash and cement. Along with the strength properties, the chemical analysis of leachate for the best suitable mix was performed according to the TCLP method to understand the hazardous materials present in the red mud when it is injected as ground material. Both strength properties and the leachate characteristics prove that the red mud with suitable fly ash and cement is an excellent material in road constructions.

Expansive Black cotton clay soils are widely distributed worldwide, and are a significant damage to infrastructure and buildigs.It is a common practice around the world to stabilize black cotton soil using fly ash to improve the strength of stabilized sub- base and sub grade soil. Soil stabilization is the improvement of strength or bearing capacity of soil by controlled compaction, proportioning or addition of suitable admixtures or stabilizers. The Black cotton soils are extremely hard when dry, but lose its strength fully when in wet condition. In monsoon they guzzle water and swell and in summer they shrink on evaporation of water from there. Because of its high Swelling and shrinkage characteristics the black cotton soils has been a challenge to the highway engineers.So in this research paper fly ash has been used to improve the various strength properties of natural black cotton soil.The objective of this research paper is to improve the engineering properties of black cotton soil by adding different percentage of fly ash by the weight of soil and make it suitable for construction. A series of standard Proctor tests (for calculation of MDD and OMC) and California Bearing Ratio (C.B.R) tests are conducted on both raw Black cotton soil and mixed soil with different percentages of fly ash (5%, 10%, 20%, 30%) by weight. A comparison between properties of raw black cotton soil, black cotton soil mixed with fly ash are performed .It is found that the properties of black cotton soil mixed with fly ash are suitably enhanced.

This paper discusses results of laboratory tests carried out with a residual soil originated from the weathering of eolian sandstone from southern Brazil. Parent rock features, like microfabric and particle bonding, are remarkably well preserved within this residual soil. Stiffness and shear strength properties were evaluated with consolidated drained (CID) and consolidated undrained (CIU) triaxial compression tests. Undisturbed specimens were tested with two different orientations between the specimen axis and bedding surfaces (i.e., parallel (δ = 0°) or perpendicular (δ = 90°)) to investigate the effect of anisotropy. When CID triaxial tests were performed with δ = 0°, the yield surface associated with the structure was much larger than when tests were performed with δ = 90°. Coincidently, CIU tests with δ = 0° showed peak shear strengths much greater than for δ = 90° at comparable test conditions. Once the peak shear strength was surpassed, CIU tests followed collapse-type effective stress paths not shown by corresponding tests with remolded specimens. A near coincidence was observed between the yield surface determined with CID tests and the envelope of collapse-type effective stress paths for δ = 0° and δ = 90°.

The Shiraidake area of northwest Kyushu has an extensive distribution of landslides. A series of undrained triaxial tests and unconfined compression tests were carried out to investigate the variation of strength properties in a selected borehole from the Shiraidake Landslide. It is a translational landslide (called the Hokusho-type in Japan) and is composed of the Early Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks that are prone to rapid weathering. Core rock samples and recompacted soil samples were used for the study. The results provided the fundamental characteristics of soil and rock under the triaxial and uniaxial tests, and indicated that the undrained behaviour of tested soils generally depends on the pre-shear consolidation pressure and dry density. In addition, the type of material used and the tests performed are important factors that influence the soil and rock strength.

Due to the scarcity of well-graded gravel materials, lateritic soils are widely used for road construction in tropic areas. However, lateritic soils often do not meet the strict requirement for subgrade and need to be improved to be used as construction material. Among several approaches used to enhance the engineering properties of lateritic soils, the use of industrial waste materials, such as fly ash, granulated blast furnace slag, is of particular interest to the construction industry as a potential replacement material for Portland cement in soil stabilization. Meanwhile, some effort has been made to study the use of quarry dust in stabilizing lateritic soils. The present work aims at assessing the compaction characteristics of three different types of lateritic soils, treated with quarry dust based geopolymer cement. A systematic study by varying the proportion of geopolymer cement was carried out. Test results show that the soil dry density substantially increased while the corresponding optimal moisture content decreased with the amount of geopolymer cement under varying compactive effort.

Fly ash-based geopolymer mortar normally achieves expected properties by heat curing. This becomes one of the obstacles for in-situ applications. The development of high calcium fly ash-based geopolymer mortar, suitable for ambient curing, will gain the applicability of such a material in civil structures. This article reports the results of an experimental study on mortar workability and the increasing of compressive strength of class C fly ash-based geopolymer mortar created in ambient curing condition. The main synthesis parameters such as alkali to the cementitious mass ratio varied from 30% to 40% by an increment of 5% and absolute volume of paste to absolute volume of voids of the aggregate ratio varied from 1 to 2 by an increment of 0.25. These parameters were designed to figure out their individual effects on mortar workability and the mechanical properties for the production of geopolymer mortar. The results suggested that the workability of mortar generally increased by using alkali to the cementitious mass ratio. The compressive strength of 60 MPa and the direct tensile strength of 2.8 MPa, the ratio of alkali to the cementitious mass of 0.35 and absolute volume of paste to absolute volume of voids of the aggregate ratio was 1.5; it was obtained at ambient temperature after 28 days of age. The results will be useful for developing the knowledge for the use of class C fly ash in producing geopolymer concrete, which is currently in progress. Hopefully, this contribution of research will improve the applications of such new binding material in the future.

This paper studies the effects of binder and filler composition to the strength properties of non-cement polyester grout (NCPG). The binder consisted of unsaturated polyester resin whereas the filler consisted of fine sand and fly ash. The composition of binder-to-filler ratios investigated were 0.43, 0.67, 1, 1.49, and 2.3. The mechanical properties of NCPG were investigated through flowability and compression tests. The test results show that the use of polyester resin combined with fine sand and fly ash produces good quality grout with high flowable rate, rapid setting, self-consolidating and high compressive strength.

Southwest Indiana has large deposits of wind-blown loess. Similar deposits are found in other states, including Illinois, Kentucky, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska. These soils consist of uniform silt with a plasticity index ranging from 0 to 10. This material is suitable for road construction if it is compacted dry of optimum. However, the material is difficult to work after it becomes wet, which commonly results in construction delays. Indiana also has large stockpiles of Class C fly ash from coal-burning power plants. The ash has cementitious properties after hydration (because of the high calcium content) and can be mixed with native soil to produce a weakly cemented soil. Significant interest exists at the Indiana Department of Transportation about the possibility of using Class C fly ash to improve the engineering properties of Indiana loess soils. The results of a laboratory testing program on the properties of loess–fly ash mixtures are presented. Various percentages of fly ash were mixed with loess soil and specimens were permitted to cure for 3 h to 28 days. Pure loess also was tested for comparison. Changes in Atterberg limits, moisture-density relationships, swell potential, and unconfined compression strength are presented. Based on this testing program, a simple method was developed to determine the optimum fly ash content for construction of a workable loess roadbed to avoid delays in construction due to wet conditions. The data presented will be useful for evaluating the stabilization of loess soils with Class C fly ash in Indiana and other states with significant loess soil deposits.
