<div>Communication for control-centric industrial applications is characterized by the requirements of very high reliability, very low and deterministic latency and high scalability. This paper proposes a novel solution for providing reliable and deterministic communication, through Wi-Fi, in industrial environments. The proposed solution, termed as HAR<sup>2</sup>D-Fi, adopts hybrid channel access mechanisms for achieving deterministic communication. It also provides temporal redundancy for enhanced reliability. HAR<sup>2</sup>D-Fi implements different medium access control (MAC) designs that build on the standard physical (PHY) layer. Such designs can be classified into two categories: (a) MAC designs with pre-defined (physical) time-slotted schedule, and (b) MAC designs with virtual time-slotted schedule. Performance evaluation, based on analysis and system-level simulations, demonstrates the viability of HAR<sup>2</sup>D-Fi for control-centric industrial applications.</div>

Magnetic bearing systems for more-electric engines (MEEs) are under development for aircraft and industrial applications to improve performance and reduce maintenance requirements. Key features of the magnetic bearing system are high performance, high temperature actuators with integrated sensors; a high speed digital controller; a high reliability, fault-tolerant system architecture; modular amplifiers; active control of tip clearance; and adaptive control algorithms. Critical components of the magnetic bearing system have been demonstrated in an engine manufacturer’s rotordynamic test stand and other components are in various stages of development.

In recent years, Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have been gaining popularity as a solution for providing mechanical power, starting from low cost mobility solutions like the electric bikes, to high performance and high reliability aeronautical Electro-Mechanical Actuator (EMA). In this framework, the availability of fault detection tools suited to these types of machines appears necessary. There is already a vast literature on this topic, but only a small percentage of the proposed techniques have been developed to a sufficiently high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) to be implementable in industrial applications. The investigation on the state of the art carried out during the first phase of the present work, tried to collect the techniques which are closest to possible implementation. To fill a gap identified in the current techniques, a partial demagnetisation detection method is proposed in this paper. This technique takes advantage of the asymmetries generated in the current by the missing magnetic flux to detect the failure. Simulations and laboratory experiments have been carried out to validate the idea, showing the potential and the easy implementation of the method. The results have been examined in detail and satisfactory conclusions have been drawn.

This paper analyzes the feasibility of the coexistence of telemetry and alarm messages employing Long-Range Wide-Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology in industrial environments. The regular telemetry messages come from periodic measurements from the majority of sensors while the alarm messages come from sensors whose transmissions are triggered by rarer (random) events that require highly reliable communication. To reach such a strict requirement, we propose here strategies of allocation of spreading factor, by treating alarm and regular (telemetry) messages differently. The potential of such allocation strategies has also been investigated under retransmission and diversity of gateways. Both indoor industrial plant and open-field scenarios are investigated. We compare the proposed solution with a benchmark scenario—where no alarm is considered—by using system level simulation. Our results show that it is possible to achieve high reliability with reasonably low delay for the alarm messages without significantly affecting the performance of the regular links.

High reliability applications for high performance computing, military, medical and industrial applications are driving electronics packaging advancements toward increased functionality with decreasing degrees of size, weight and power (SWaP) The substrate technology selected for the electronics package is a key enabling technology towards achieving SWaP. Standard printed circuit boards (PWBs) utilize dielectric materials containing glass cloth, which can limit circuit density and performance, as well as inhibit the ability to achieve reliable assemblies with bare semiconductor die components. Ceramic substrates often used in lieu of PWBs for chip packaging have disadvantages of weight, marginal electrical performance and reliability as compared to organic technologies. Alternative materials including thin, particle-containing organic substrates, liquid crystal polymer (LCP) and microflex enable SWaP, while overcoming the limitations of PWBs and ceramic. This paper will discuss the use of these alternative organic substrate materials to achieve extreme electronics miniaturization with outstanding electrical performance and high reliability. The effect of substrate type on chip-package interaction and resulting reliability will be discussed in detail, and compared to standard PWB and ceramic. Microflex assemblies to achieve extreme miniaturization and atypical form factors driven by implantable and in vivo medical applications are also shown.

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the structural and synthetic chemistry, and the industrial applications, of dioxazine pigments, a small group of high performance organic pigments. The color violet (or purple) has frequently assumed a prominent position in history, on account of its rarity and cost. The natural colorant Tyrian purple and the first synthetic textile dye, Mauveine, are prime examples of this unique historical feature. CI Pigment Violet 23, also referred to as Dioxazine Violet or Carbazole Violet, is one of the most universally used organic pigments, by far the most important industrial pigment in the violet shade area. Dioxazine Violet is also unique as the dominant industrial violet pigment providing a brilliant, intense violet color and an excellent all-round set of fastness properties. The pigment has a polycyclic molecular structure, originally described wrongly as a linear arrangement, and later shown to adopt an S-shaped arrangement on the basis of X-ray structural analysis. Two other dioxazine pigments are of rather lesser importance. The synthesis and manufacturing route to CI Pigment Violet 23 is described in the review. Finally, a survey of the principal current applications of the individual dioxazine pigments is presented.

Future robotic systems will be pervasive technologies operating autonomously in unknown spaces that are shared with humans. Such complex interactions make it compulsory for them to be lightweight, soft, and efficient in a way to guarantee safety, robustness, and long-term operation. Such a set of qualities can be achieved using soft multipurpose systems that combine, integrate, and commute between conventional electromechanical and fluidic drives, as well as harvest energy during inactive actuation phases for increased energy efficiency. Here, we present an electrostatic actuator made of thin films and liquid dielectrics combined with rigid polymeric stiffening elements to form a circular electrostatic bellow muscle (EBM) unit capable of out-of-plane contraction. These units are easy to manufacture and can be arranged in arrays and stacks, which can be used as a contractile artificial muscle, as a pump for fluid-driven soft robots, or as an energy harvester. As an artificial muscle, EBMs of 20 to 40 millimeters in diameter can exert forces of up to 6 newtons, lift loads over a hundred times their own weight, and reach contractions of over 40% with strain rates over 1200% per second, with a bandwidth over 10 hertz. As a pump driver, these EBMs produce flow rates of up to 0.63 liters per minute and maximum pressure head of 6 kilopascals, whereas as generator, they reach a conversion efficiency close to 20%. The compact shape, low cost, simple assembling procedure, high reliability, and large contractions make the EBM a promising technology for high-performance robotic systems.

This paper presents a brief description and several illustrations of a new concept of marine reversing gears that utilize high-performance differentially driven epicyclic gear arrangements. This new marine power transmission has the potential to offer high reliability, simplicity, light weight, high mechanical efficiency, compactness, and technological compatibility with aircraft derivative marine gas turbine engines. Further, this new reversing gear minimizes the danger of driving the free turbine in reverse as might be the case with conventional parallel shaft reversing gear arrangements. To illustrate the weight reduction potential, a modern naval ship propulsion system utilizing an aircraft derivative gas turbine engine as the prime mover in conjunction with a conventional parallel shaft reversing gear can be compared to the subject reversing gear differential. A typical 18,642 kW (25,000 hp) marine gas turbine engine might weigh approximately 5000 kg (11,000 lb) and a conventional marine technology parallel shaft reversing gear might weigh on the order of 90,000 to 136,000 kg (200,000 to 300,000 lb). Using gear technology derived from the aircraft industry, a functionally similar differentially driven marine reversing gear might weigh approximately 13,600 kg (30,000 lb).

Blends of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) have always been the subject of intense reasearch for encouraging polymer waste recycling while producing new materials for specific applications in a sustainable way. However, being thermodynamically immiscible, these polyolefins form a binary system usually exhibiting lower performances compared with those of the homopolymers. Many studies have been carried out to better understand the PE/PP blend compatibilization for developing a high-performance and cost-effective product. Both nonreactive and reactive compatibilization promote the brittle to ductile transition for a PE/PP blend. However, the final product usually does not meet the requirements for high demanding commercial applications. Therefore, further PE/PP modification with a reinforcing filler, being either synthetic or natural, proved to be a good method for manufacturing high-performance reinforcend polymer blend composites, with superior and tailored properties. This review summarizes the recent progress in compatibilization techniques applied for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between PE and PP. Moreover, future perspectives on better understanding the influence of themodynamics on PE/PP synergy are discussed to introduce more effective compatibilization strategies, which will allow this blend to be used for innovative industrial applications.
