This paper presents a multidimensional, qualitative approach to data collection. This approach makes qualitative data easy to collect and encourages students to reflect and contextualize their experience so that the students themselves articulate their own growth towards intercultural competence. This article will demonstrate how I established a set of learning outcomes for study abroad, encouraged student awareness of these learning outcomes prior to departure and during the program, and collected qualitative data to measure how well students were reaching these outcomes. This innovative approach, the Reflective Model of Intercultural Competence, shows both the benefits of qualitative data and of a multidimensional collection process. This approach provides rich data about student gains and it encourages students to consider their experience in broad terms, providing them with meaningful ways to articulate their experience to others. Furthermore, integrating learning outcomes into assessment reinforces their importance. The Reflective Model of Intercultural Competence provides a new and effective multifaceted tool for assessing study abroad outcomes

PurposeThe authors examine the role of internationalisation at-home activities and an international classroom at a home institution to promote intercultural competence development during a study abroad.Design/methodology/approachThe authors use large scale longitudinal data from the global mind monitor (GMM) (2018–2020) to examine change over time in both multicultural personality (MPQ) and cultural knowledge (CQ) among students in Dutch higher education institutions. The authors analyse the moderating effect of the preparation in the home institution by looking at the added value of both intercultural communication courses and international classroom setting for intercultural competence development during a study abroad.FindingsThe results show that particularly courses on intercultural communication significantly promote intercultural competence development during a stay abroad. Frequent interactions with international staff also seem to be beneficial for this development.Research limitations/implicationsThis study was conducted in the Netherlands, in one of the most internationalised educational systems in the world. Therefore, it is difficult to generalise these findings to other contexts before any further empirical research is conducted.Practical implicationsBased on the findings, the authors formulate practical advice for higher education institutions that aim to get the most out of the international learning outcomes of a study abroad.Originality/valueThis paper is the first to assess the moderating effect of preparatory internationalisation at home initiatives on the intercultural learning effects of international experiences later on in a study program. Other studies have proposed that these effects will exist but have not tested them empirically with longitudinal data.

AbstractThe result of this study aims to determine the patterns of scientific and Islamic integration on the curriculum of study programs applying the Indonesian National Qualification Framework, or commonly called KKNI. This study is conducted by using qualitative approach while utilizing document, field observation, and interview as the data collection techniques of this study. Generally, integrated lesson plans with Islamic and Indonesian values in the curriculum of study programs at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in which based on KKNI is still not well-documented. The suitability among ‘graduate profiles’ as the identity of each graduate program was still not proportional directly to the learning achievements or learning outcomes in which has became the reference of the learning implementation. The vision of integration, developed by the university’s stakeholders, has not been well-implemented, either in written documents or in implementation. Nevertheless, in the implementation of learning, most of the study programs, have already integrated the science, Islamic and Indonesian values, both in scientific contexts—for instance, applied in the learning methods, in teaching materials, in the lecture activities—and in the utilization of the Qur’an as one of the sources of lectures. How to Cite : Sofyan, A., Fauzan., Sayuti, W. Constructing the learning outcomes and designing the optimal learning environment are valuable practices in teaching and learning endeavors. Doing so for intercultural learning requires a deft balance of learner inputs and instructional acumen. Assessment of intercultural competence is an essential component since it offers learners and instructors insights on where students are, where they wish to grow, and the success of treatment outcomes. In this study of practice, we examine three years of pre-post mixed-method intercultural assessment data, along with teaching and learning practices and outcomes, to gain insights into how this work of instructional design for intercultural competence can succeed. We also provide suggestions for improvements. The learners were 203 MBA students from the U.S. Pacific Northwest who were enrolled in either a short-term study abroad program or a “glocal” learning experience course. Learners were assessed using the Inter cultural Effectiveness Scale (IES) and the AAC&U VALUE Rubric on Intercultural Knowledge and Competency (IKAC). Results support the criticality of intentional instructional course design based on intercultural assessment data for improved intercultural competency development.

The present study aimed at finding out the efforts made by teachers to improve the outcomes of Islamic education (PAI) learning undertaken by IV grade students at SDN 156 in Bangun Jaya village, Rejang Lebong regency. This study used a qualitative approach, and the data were collected using observation and interview techniques. After data collection, analyses were carried out with the following stages: selecting data, presenting data, and drawing conclusion. This study concluded that the efforts made by teachers in improving students’ learning outcomes of PAI included: asking the principal to add learning hours outside PAI teaching hours; communicating with students’ parents to remind their children of rehearsing lessons at home; making evaluations before and after the lessons; choosing approaches or methods that appealed to students; making use of learning media to make it easier to explain the materials so that the materials were easily understood by students; and using the reward and punishment methods. The description of PAI learning outcomes for the fourth grade students was quite good because all students’ values in the school year of 2019-2020 could be seen from the results of their semester which had reached the specified KKM standard.

Portfolios were used to assess cognitive and affective course learning outcomes in an undergraduate writing program at a private university in Jordan. A convenience sample of twenty-one male and female Arab EFL/ESL freshmen, wrote short weekly assignments over a fifteen-week semester, made regular diary entries about their writing and leisure reading, and wrote a short children's story. These were not graded but students received prompt feedback. At semester’s end, they collected their work in a portfolio and wrote a final evidence-based reflection, in which they analysed their strengths and weaknesses in writing. These portfolios were graded based on their inclusion of regularly submitted written work, evidence of their response to given feedback and their analysis of their progress in writing. Using qualitative data analysis based on the grounded theory method, students’ reflections were mined for rich data, concepts were labelled and emerging categories were identified. These codes were further analysed in more depth, using cognitive and affective taxonomies, which showed that the course outcomes had been met. Recommendations are made for greater use of portfolio assessment at tertiary level in Jordan.

In-person interactions have traditionally been the gold standard for qualitative data collection. The COVID-19 pandemic required researchers to consider if remote data collection can meet research objectives, while retaining the same level of data quality and participant protections. We use four case studies from the Philippines, Zambia, India and Uganda to assess the challenges and opportunities of remote data collection during COVID-19. We present lessons learned that may inform practice in similar settings, as well as reflections for the field of qualitative inquiry in the post-COVID-19 era. Key challenges and strategies to overcome them included the need for adapted researcher training in the use of technologies and consent procedures, preparation for abbreviated interviews due to connectivity concerns, and the adoption of regular researcher debriefings. Participant outreach to allay suspicions ranged from communicating study information through multiple channels to highlighting associations with local institutions to boost credibility. Interviews were largely successful, and contained a meaningful level of depth, nuance and conviction that allowed teams to meet study objectives. Rapport still benefitted from conventional interviewer skills, including attentiveness and fluency with interview guides. While differently abled populations may encounter different barriers, the included case studies, which varied in geography and aims, all experienced more rapid recruitment and robust enrollment. Reduced in-person travel lowered interview costs and increased participation among groups who may not have otherwise attended. In our view, remote data collection is not a replacement for in-person endeavours, but a highly beneficial complement. It may increase accessibility and equity in participant contributions and lower costs, while maintaining rich data collection in multiple study target populations and settings.
