In the article we seek to address questions regarding the interest of graduates of a degree course in Natural Sciences and Mathematics in relation to the teaching career in basic education. The course enables its graduates to work in the subjects Science and Mathematics in the final years of elementary school and Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in high school. Our intention is to identify and reflect on the perceptions of these graduates about teaching, highlighting with this inherent aspects to the exercise of this profession in basic education. From the application of questionnaires to graduates of this course, we produced data regarding their performance in basic education, which enabled us to reflect on the national scenario in relation to the exercise of this profession. We could observe that the majority of the students participating in the research are not working in basic education and that the current scenario of devaluation of the teaching career exerts a significant influence in the decision making process of choosing or not the teacher profession for professional performance after graduation.

In 2005 a new chemistry subject standard for basic education was developed in Latvia. It includes a new component, ‘scientific inquiry’. In order to develop students’ inquiry skills, their teachers need to master them first. The purpose of this study was to examine Latvian chemistry teachers' skills to effectively organize student scientific inquiry within their lessons. From 2009 to 2011, experts from the project ‘Natural Sciences and Mathematics’ observed and analyzed the performance of 18 chemistry teachers at basic schools in 31 lessons. 56 lesson observation and analysis work sheets were analized on the student scientific inquiry. Chemistry teachers with experience in modernized chemistry contents have better skills to plan the study process towards the results, to apply study methods correctly and organize collaboration among students, to provide efficient feedback, analyze their performance in the lesson and reflect on it. In order to develop teachers’ skills to organize student scientific inquiry, it is important to focus on teachers’ skills to organize their work during the lesson and to reflect on it. This can be done through organizing teachers’ learning groups for investigating their professional performance, conferences and experience exchange seminars with lesson observation and analyses. Key words: chemistry teachers’ skills, lesson observation, scientific inquiry.

More attention has been paid to environmental matters in recent years, mainly due to the current scenario of accentuated environmental degradation. The economic valuation of nature goods can contribute to the decision-making process in environment management, generating a more comprehensive informational base. This paper aims to present, in a historic perspective, the different concepts attributed to nature goods and were related to the current predominant perspectives of nature analyses. For this purpose, this paper presents the different concepts attributed to value since the pre-classical period, when nature were viewed as inert and passive providers of goods and services, this view legitimized nature's exploration without concern over the preservation and conservation of nature. The capacity of nature to absorb the impact of human action appears to be reaching its limit, considering the irreversibility, the irreproducibility and the possibility of collapse. The appropriate method for valuing natural resources is not known, but more important than the method is to respect and incorporate the particular characteristics of the nature goods into this process. These characteristics must be valuated in order to arrive at a more consistence approach to nature value and promote sustainability.

A decision-making process in an organization is more effective if it is supported by reliable and valid information systems. Management Information System (MIS) and Decision Support System (DSS) are two systems commonly used by organizational leaders to collect information for making the Quality of Decision (QD). This study aimed to empirically investigate MIS influences on vocational high school principals’ QD. Besides, this study examined the moderation effect of the DSS on the decision-making processes. This quantitative research employed the survey method and purposive sampling technique. As many as 60 vocational high school principals and vice-principals in Yogyakarta, Indonesia were the participants of this study. They filled in questionnaires consisting of 19 items that were developed using the Likert scale. The quantitative data obtained were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling. The research findings show that MIS has a significant effect on the quality of the decision-making process by vocational high school principals. However, for improving the decision quality, the model must be assisted by DSS as the moderator variable. MIS carries information required for principals while DSS provides data, model, and analysis instruments used for special cases in vocational high schools.

This article presents an analysis of the teaching career beginning in Basic Education using the beginning teacher as a reference. The study is based on the theoretical discussions of Gonçalves (2000), Huberman (2000), Guarnieri (2005), Tardif (2008), Darling-Hammond (2014), among others. For methodological development, we used qualitative research (BRASILEIRO, 2013), type case study (MEKSENAS, 2011) with input in ethnomethodology (COULON, 1995). The research was carried out in a public school and had as participants a teacher whose teaching time is less than two years, a principal and a pedagogical coordinator. The data collection techniques were observation, questionnaire, interview and field diary. Data analysis was performed based on Bardin (1977), and interpretation in accordance with Hermeneutics-Dialectics also discussed through Minayo's reflections (1998). The results indicate elements that facilitate the beginning of the teaching profession, such as commitment, respect, profile, self-confidence, among other principles. They also point out difficult elements, such as shyness and practical fragility. They also show the different challenges encountered by the teacher, especially the process of overcoming the dichotomy between training (theory) and professional practice. In general, the research findings show that the entry of the beginner teacher into the school results from a university education based on teaching and research. And, that the beginning of the teaching career explains a context of learning knowledge, characterized by the availability and proactivity inherent in pedagogical work, by the experiences of social relations between students and school professionals that converge to the construction of the teaching professional identity. Therefore, the study expands the reflection on the teaching profession from the perspective of the beginning teacher collaborating to expand this field of knowledge.
