Insurance business is broadly classified under the two heads – Life Insurance and General Insurance. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LICI) and General Insurance Corporation of India (GICI) are the key players in the public sector. The Indian insurance market consists of many private players as well. The gross direct premium has been the income sources for the insurance business. This study shall highlight the gross direct premium income specifically under the General and Health insurance business of the Indian public sector insurers.

AbstractWhile no longer common in the private sector, most public sector employers offer retiree health insurance (RHI) as a retirement benefit to their employees. While these plans are thought to be an important tool for employers to attract, retain, motivate, and ultimately retire workers, they represent a large and growing cost. This paper reviews what is currently known about RHI in the public sector, while highlighting many important unanswered questions. The analysis is informed by data produced in accordance with the 2004 Government Accounting Standards Board Rule 45 (GASB 45). We consider the extent of the unfunded liabilities states face and explore what factors may explain the variation in liabilities across states. The importance and sustainability of RHI plans in the public sector ultimately depend on how workers view and value this post-retirement benefit, yet little is known about how RHI directly impacts the public sector labor market. We conclude with a discussion of the future of RHI plans in the public sector.

Deregulation of the Indian insurance sector has witnessed the rise of private players in the Indian general insurance sector post-1999. Though the four major public sector general insurers still continue to dominate the Indian general insurance market, an abrupt rise in the number of private players has raised concerns upon the solvency position of the public sector general insurance companies in safeguarding their policyholders’ interests. The major reason for this concern could be attributed to the existing investment portfolios of the general insurance firms, the impact of which has been felt upon their solvency position. The present study investigated the investment portfolios of the four major public sector general insurance firms in India involved in multiline businesses, and its subsequent impact upon their solvency position. The application of the multiple linear regression model has been employed to investigate the solvency determinants of the public sector general insurance firms in view of their short-term and long-term investment portfolios, covering the study period from 2005–2006 to 2014–2015. The findings of the study have pointed out the necessity for the four public sector general insurers to focus on certain key investment variables in their investment portfolios in ensuring a sound solvency position in the long run.

It was anticipated that increased uptake of Private Health Insurance (PHI) would reduce demand on public sector surgical waiting lists. The best measure of changed demand is the comparison of the actual cases added to that projected given previous trends in PHI uptake. Detailed Victorian data is available up to 2000-1.The total waiting list has varied little, reflecting significant decreases in both in patients added to and removed. There was a marked increase in private sector elective surgery cases coinciding with the fall in additions to the public sector waiting list and in public sector elective surgical cases. The June 2001 Victorian surgical waiting list would have been 69,599 not 41,838 if the PHI uptake rate had continued to fall in line with pre-1999 trends, and that of June 2002 about 100,000 compared to 40,458 in March 2002.Limited data from other states suggests the Victorian trends are representative of all Australia.


The life insurance industry of India has 23 licenses -holders running their business in this sector. The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LICI), which is the only player in the public sector, the remaining area is covered by the 22 private sector companies. IRDAI has taken initiatives to provide effective grievance handling machinery to address the grievances of policyholders. Consumer dispute Redressal agency is efficient for handling complaints and easily accessible. This paper examines the regulations and guidelines framed by IRDAI for effective grievance handling and the study would provide some insights into the areas, specifically status of grievances in public and private life insurance companies (LIC, SBI, HDFC, Reliance Life and Bajaj Allianz) and the functioning of consumer dispute Redressal agencies of life insurance sectors.

The purpose of the article was to reveal the analytical tools for evaluating the effectiveness of the allocated financing funds for the provision of the services provided in the public sector of the economy, the application of which does not have a uniform methodology today. The possibility to solve this issue is shown with regard to the compulsory health insurance system. To achieve the goal, the study reveals the definition of such categories as “effect” and “efficiency” of the medical institutions activities, “efficiency of spending” of the Territorial Fund for Compulsory Health Insurance. There is revealed the analytical significance of the existing methodological approaches to assessing the effectiveness of health care costs; their comparative analysis is carried out. Based on the results, the alternative is proposed, based on the system of the cost-effectiveness indices to achieve the health, social and economic effects of medical institutions; the analytical advantages of the alternative proposed are justified.

In 1987 there were 1,428 psychiatrists in Australia, 8.8 per 100,000 population (Burvill, 1988), 55% identified as in private practice and 45% in public sector practice. Let us be clear about terms. Public sector practice means that each week you receive a salary from the public purse whether you have seen one or a hundred patients. Private practice means that you are paid on a piece-work basis, also largely from the public purse (national health insurance or Medicare), but the income (at about $100 per hour) depends exactly on the number of hours spent with patients. On average, private psychiatrists in Australia gross about $150,000 per year, out of which they must pay practice expenses. The pay for public sector psychiatrists probably averages $70,000 to which, for the purposes of our calculation, we will add the cost of rooms, telephone and secretary provided by the hospital which at $30,000 brings the cost of a public sector psychiatrist to about $100,000 per year. If 45% of psychiatrists are in public practice then the averaged cost of a psychiatrist in Australia can be calculated as $127,500 per annum, and as there are 8.8 psychiatrists per 100,000 the cost, calculated on this simple basis, is $1.12 million per 100,000 population (Andrews, 1989).

Abstract We estimate the benefit of life-extending medical treatments to life insurance companies. Our main insight is that life insurance companies have a direct benefit from such treatments because they lower the insurer’s liabilities by pushing the death benefit further into the future and raising future premium income. We apply this insight to immunotherapy, treatments associated with durable gains in survival rates for a growing number of cancer patients. We estimate that the life insurance sector’s aggregate benefit from FDA-approved immunotherapies is $9.8 billion a year. Such life-extending treatments are often prohibitively expensive for patients and governments alike. Exploiting this value creation, we explore various ways life insurers could improve stress-free access to treatment. We discuss potential barriers to integration and the long-run implications for the industrial organization of life and health insurance markets, as well as the broader implications for medical innovation and long-term care insurance markets.

The main weaknesses of the contemporary health care system in the USA are: dropping of a significant part of the population out of the health insurance system, lack of the efficient insurance business government regulation, and excessive spendings for health care, from the public viewpoint, as well as their growth rates. Understanding of these problems forces the U.S. authorities to reform this branch of economy. The Act signed by the President Obama foresees changes in basic health care structures. The complex of such changes reflects the essence of the reform conducted.
