Introduction: This study was done to determine the mean difference and correlation between fasting capillary and venous glucose estimation. Methods: This was cross-sectional analytic study done in United Mission Hospital, Palpa, Tansen. Calculated sample size was 92, convenience sampling technique was used. During 5 month of duration in 92 diabetic patients, where fasting capillary and venous glucose were performed consecutively. Confounding was ruled out with matching approach, adjustment tests were also used like X2 Mantel -Haenszel and logistic regression. Reporting guideline of this observational study was done with the help of SROBE guidelines. Results: The mean venous blood glucose was 9.52% higher than the Mean capillary glucose. A strong correlation was observed between venous and capillary blood glucose, with Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.94. Conclusions: There is a significant difference in the blood glucose results analyzed on a bedside glucometer when the samples are taken from capillary or venous sources. Although good correlation is between venous and capillary derived samples, caution must be exercised in accepting the results as equivalent or using either as substitutes for a laboratory blood glucose result.

ABSTRAK Latar Belakang : Diabetes melitus merupakan penyakit metabolik dengan karakteristik hiperglikemia sebagai akibat kelainan sekresi insulin maupun kerja insulin. Diabetes sebagai salah satu penyebab dislipidemia sekunder, sehingga pengelolaan glukosa darah merupakan pencegahan primer timbulnya komplikasi penyakit kardiovaskular. Hasil Riskesdas tahun 2018, prevalensi diabetes melitus yang didiagnosis dokter pada penduduk di semua umur sebesar 3,4% di Kota Surabaya.Tujuan : Penelitian ini untuk mengetahui perbedaan profil lipid pada level HbA1C normal, prediabetes dan diabetes melitus.Metode : Penelitian cross sectional, teknik pengambilan sampel dengan simple random sampling dari data rekam medis pasien rawat jalan di Rumah Sakit Islam Surabaya  dari 1 Januari tahun 2018 sampai dengan 31 Desember 2019 berusia 35-80 tahun dan mendapat pemeriksaan HbA1c, kolesterol, trigliserida dan LDL-kolesterol pada waktu yang sama dan terdokumentasi lengkap pertama sekali sehingga diperoleh besar sampel 73 data pasien. Uji Anova one way digunakan untuk mengetahui perbedaan rata-rata kolesterol, trigliserida dan LDL-kolesterol berdasarkan HbA1C.Hasil : Hasil penelitian menunjukkantidakada perbedaan yang signifikan rata-rata kolesterol, dan LDL-kolesterol dengan tingkatan HbA1C (p>0,05), ada perbedaan yang signifikan rata-rata trigliserid dengan HbA1C normal, prediabetes, dan diabetes (p=0,01). Hasil multiple comparison dengan metode Tukey HSD menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan rata-rata trigliserid  pada HbA1C normal dengan diabetes (p=0,039) dan prediabetes dengan diabetes (p=0,044).Kesimpulan :Perbedaan rata-rata trigliserida signifikanpada HbA1Ckategorinormal dan prediabetes dengan diabetes, pentingnya mengendalikanglukosa darah untuk mencegahkomplikasi kardiovaskuler pada penderita diabetes melitus yang dapat dilakukan melalui pemantauan mandiri glukosa darah, pola hidup sehat, aktivitas fisik secara teratur, terapi nutrisi medis sesuai kebutuhan, menurunkan berat badan bagi yang mengalami obesitas, tidak merokokdan intervensi obat anti hiperglikemia jika dibutuhkan.Kata Kunci : diabetes, HbA1C, kolesterol, trigliserid, LDL-kolesterol. ABSTRACT  Background :Diabetes melitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglicemia as a result of abnormal insulin secretion and insulin action. Riskesdas 2018 said that the prevalence of doctors' diagnosed diabetes in the population at all age 3.4% in Surabaya.Objective : This study is to find out the difference in lipid profiles on normal HbA1Clevels, pre-diabetes and diabetes mellitusMethod: Cross-sectional study, the sampling technique used was simple random sampling fromoutpatient medical recordsthe Surabaya Islamic hospital's from 1st of January 2018 to 31st December 2019 aged 35-80 years and checked for HbA1C, cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol at the same and firsttime documented. Sample sizes of 73 data analized with One Way Anova test was used to identify differences in mean cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL-cholesterol based Hba1C.Results :The results showed that there was no significant difference mean cholesterol and mean LDL-cholesterol with HbA1C levels (p> 0.05), there were significant differences mean the triglyceride with normal HbA1C levels, pre-diabetes, and diabetes (p= 0.01). Multiple comparason results using Tukey HSD methods showed that there was significant differences mean the triglycerid on normal HbA1C levels with diabetes (p= 0.039) and the mean triglyceride ebetween hba1c prediabetesand diabetes (p= 0.044).Conclusions: The mean difference trigliseride signifnificant in normal HbA1C levels and pre-diabetes with diabetes.The importantce of controlling blood glucose to prevent cardiovasculer complication in people with diebetes mellitus can be done through education on independent monitoring of blood glucose, healthy lifestyle, reguler physical activity, medical nutrition therapy according to the needs, lost weight for those who are obese, do not smoke and  anti-hyperglicemia drug intervention if needed.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown measures have affected the sexuality and emotional bonding among the couple across the world. Objectives: We aimed to assess the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown on the married people’s emotional bonding and sexual relationships in 3 south Asian counties (Bangladesh, India, and Nepal). Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among Bangladesh, India, and Nepal residents from April 3 to April 15, 2020. The survey was designed in English. The participants were selected through convenience sampling technique, the link of the online questionnaire was shared with the participants. Only participants older than 18 years and above, married, and living with their spouses were included in the study. Results: A total number of 120 respondents were included finally for analysis from the participating countries (India, Nepal, and Bangladesh). The mean age of the participants was 35.42 (±5.73) years; the majority were males under the age of 40 years and had completed postgraduation as their qualification. Among the study participants, more than half (53.8%) of the women reported being sexually active during the lockdown, whereas 41% of the men reported being sexually active. Among the sexually active participants, most women (57.7%) reported that they perceived positive emotional bonding with their partners. Nevertheless, there was no significant difference observed when compared with men. There are variations in responses. However, no significant association was identified. Conclusion: There are a few insights from the study, that is, there was no significant difference found in almost 3 countries in emotional intimacy. There had been a trend that there is improved emotional bonding with their partners, although no significant difference was observed.

Background Type-2 diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease and risk of coronary disease is three to four fold increased in patients with diabetes compared with non-diabetic population and 60-80% 0f type-2 diabetics are obese. Methods This study was conducted in Nepalgunj Teaching Hospital, Kohalpur, Banke, Nepal, between 1st March, 2011 and 28th February, 2012. A total of 150 samples were taken to assess the lipid profile in type-2 diabetic patients associated with obesity and 25 obese controls for their lipid profile. Venous blood samples were taken from all the subjects in the morning after fasting overnight. Exclusion criteria included pregnancy, chronic infectious disease, heart failure; renal failure and drug allergy were confirmed from the subject’s personal physician report and a detailed history. The data was analyzed using Excel 2003, R 2.8.0 Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows Version 16.0 (SPSS Inc; Chicago, IL, USA) and the EPI Info 3.5.1 Windows Version. Results The mean ± SD age of diabetic patients with obesity was 53.76 ± 6.23 while the mean ± SD age of control was 49.61 ± 4.8. Out of 150 patients 105 (70%) were males and 45 (30%) were females. Among control subjects 16 (64%) were males and 9 (36%) were females. Obese type-2 diabetic patients when compared to obese control subjects showed statistically significant increase in the levels of serum total cholesterol (p ? 0.001), serum triglycerides (p ? 0.001), serum LDL-cholesterol (p ? 0.001) while serum HDL-cholesterol levels did not show statistically significant difference in the two group (p ? 0.05). Conclusion This study showed obese diabetic individuals have dyslipidemia and more prone to develop cardiovascular diseases. Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a rapidly growing health problem in India. Diet and physical activity are important modifiable risk factors affecting the incidence, severity and management of DM. The aim of the study was to assess diet of diabetes mellitus patients. 87 adults from a cohort of diabetic patients attending the Medical Clinics at the Hamidia Hospital Bhopal were invited for the study.Methods: Information about their nutritional status & food consumption pattern was taken by 24-hour dietary recall and food frequency questionnaire. Data was analysed using Epi Info and MS Excel. Frequency counts and percentages were used to describe the demographic characteristics of the participants while the significance difference in between male and female participants. The significance level was set at P <0.05 and 0.01. Statistical analysis used:  MS Excel and Epi Info.Results: The study sample was 87 out of which 56 were females and 31 were males; mean age of DM patients was 48.21±12.98.The mean energy intake was 1386.52 kcal and 1125.79 kcal among male and female. The mean protein intake was 68.71 g and 50.50 among male and female diabetics. There was significant difference between male and female age. There were no significant difference in body mass index and waist hip ratio between male and female. 30 (34.5%) & 16 (18.4%) were overweight and obese respectively.Conclusions: Based on these findings, the dietary practices of diabetic patients are inadequate and require improvement. Education and counselling about diet of a diabetes patient is needed.

Introduction: Dental profession has an ethical and legal responsibility in patient care. A properly maintained patient record is a very important aspect of this patient care. The aim of this study was to evaluate dentists' practice in obtaining and recording the medical and pharmacological history of patients in Yazd City in 2020. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 197 dentists working in Yazd City were selected during the study and their practice in obtaining and recording medical history was evaluated using a valid questionnaire. Data were analyzed by SPSS23 statistical software t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Out of 197 dentists participating in this study, 93 (52.8%) were male and 104 (47.2%) were female. Their mean age was 39.37± 8.36 years and their mean clinical experience was 6.5± 9.25 years. The mean score of dentists' practice in obtaining and recording the medical and pharmacological history was 61.30±4.95 (range 45-72) out of 72 points. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean score of dentists' practice by gender, clinical experience, university of study and degree (P-value>0.05), but there was a statistically significant relationship between dentists' age and their practice score (P-value=0.040). Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, the mean practice source of dentists in obtaining and recording the medical and pharmacological history of patients was good. The effect of gender, university of study and degree on dentists' practice was not significant. However, with increasing age and experience in dentistry, the practice score of dentists was lower.

This cross-sectional survey was carried out during the period, October 2005 to December 2005, among 184 randomly chosen diabetic patients in Khulna Diabetic Centre, Khulna, Bangladesh, to evaluate the knowledge of the patients for their control of diabetes mellitus and also to explore the association(s) of their attitude and knowledge regarding diabetic awareness towards educational status and socio-demographic profile. In this study, we found a significant difference, in diabetic awareness to keep correct blood glucose level, in different educational group. But, it did not influence the subjects of different educational group to visit the diabetic clinic. There was no significant difference in the knowledge of correct blood glucose level and in regularity of visit to the diabetic clinic, in rural and urban people. Knowledge of correct blood glucose level varied significantly among male and female patients, although, no significant variation was found among them in visiting to the diabetic clinic. We can conclude that, diabetic education programs can improve self-regulatory behavior and in the long run, can reduce morbidity and mortality.   doi:10.3329/jom.v10i3.2008 J Medicine 2009; 10 (Supplement 1): 7-10

Background: Diabetes mellitus has become one of the biggest health problems of this era. The resultant microvascular and macrovascular complications add to significant amount of morbidity and mortality. Urine microalbumin is considered as an early marker for microvascular compli­cations among diabetic patients. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of microalbuminuria among type 2 diabetic patients attending Kathmandu Medical College and its relation with glycemic control, age, sex, duration of diabetes. Methods: A total of 208 previously diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients at­tending medical outpatient department of Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal were included in the study over a period of 1 year (October 2017 - September 2018). Fasting and 2-hour postprandial venous blood for blood glucose and HbA1c measurement and early morning urine sam­ple (after overnight fast) was collected for detection of microalbuminuria. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 23. Results: The prevalence of microalbuminuria among the study population (mean age: 54.22 ± 11.76 years, mean HbA1c: 7.62 ± 1.53 %) was 42.8%. Microalbuminuria had significant correlation with HbA1c and duration of diabetes (p<0.001), but not with age, sex and type of medication. There was positive correlation between urine microalbumin and fasting and post-prandial blood glucose. Conclusions: Our present study found high prevalence of microalbumin­uria among diabetic patients with poor glycemic control. It is suggested that tighter glycemic control with regular urine microalbumin testing should be integral part of diabetic management plan to prevent long term complications such as diabetic nephropathy

AbstractBackgroundRapid blood glucose estimation is required to prescribe treatments and to make dose adjustments in diabetic patients. However, measuring plasma glucose levels is time consuming. Therefore, the use of glucometers has greatly increased.ObjectivesTo measure the correlation between capillary and venous blood glucose levels.MethodsSeventy patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were enrolled in the present study and informed written consent was obtained from all participants. Demographic characteristics and clinical information was noted. Capillary and venous glucose levels were determined. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 21 was used for data analysis.ResultsMean age of patients was 52 ± 12 years. It included 29% men; 71% women; 9% smokers; and 90% poor. Mean venous glucose was 11.73 ± 4.64 mmol/L and mean capillary glucose 12.57 ± 5.21 mmol/L. These findings demonstrated a significant intermethod mean difference of 0.84 mmol/L (P < 0.001). Inter-glucose difference was not significant at glucose levels near normal. However, it increased gradually with rise in glucose measurements and was significant at elevated glucose levels. Both concordance correlation coefficient and intraclass correlation coefficient demonstrated positive correlation and more consistency between glucose estimations. A Bland and Altman plot presented excellent agreement between glucometrically and photometrically determined glucose levels.ConclusionA positive correlation coefficient showed strong association between capillary and venous glucose measurements.

Abstract Background Patellofemoral pain is a common condition. The Kujala score is a well-established scoring system to assess anterior knee pain and has been translated into many languages including Arabic. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to culturally adapt the Arabic version of the Kujala score and determine its validity. Methods The Kujala score is composed of 13 multiple-choice questions. We modified two questions in the score; running and squatting, and were replaced with questions related to walking on different terrain and prostration, each with the same number of answer choices as the original questions so as not to affect the final score. These modifications were written in Arabic by the same group who translated and validated the original score into Arabic. The original and modified Kujala scores was printed and given to patients complaining of patellofemoral pain to be filled during their visit to the orthopedic outpatient clinics. Final scores for the original and modified questionnaires were calculated. Data was analyzed using SPSS statistics version 21.0 measuring Cronbach’s alpha, intraclass correlation coefficient, and Pearson correlation. Results Ninety-four patients were included in the study, 28 (29.8%) men and 66 (70.2%) women. The mean age for the included patients was 43.67 (± 14.46) years. The mean score for the modified initial questionnaire was 63.91 (± 16.32), and the mean score for the modified re-test questionnaire was 66.52 (± 17.50). There was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores (p = 0.041), with a mean difference of 1.97 (95% CI 0.08 to 3.856). We found a significant strong correlation between the score before and after changing the questions with a p value of < 0.001. Conclusions The culturally modified Arabic Kujala questionnaire is shown to be a valid, well-designed tool and an appropriate method of measuring patellofemoral pain.

Background: Status of minerals such as zinc, magnesium, and chromium among diabetic patients are considered lower than non-diabetic peoples, both in the serum and intake. Some reviews show that those minerals contribute to carbohydrate metabolism among diabetic patients.Objective: This study aims to explore intake of zinc, magnesium, and chromium among DMT2 in Denpasar.Method: This is a cross-sectional analytic study. The population was all (70) DMT2 patients registered at Chronic Disease Service (Prolanis) at two Primary Health Care (PHC) Denpasar Utara III PHC and Denpasar Timur I PHC. The sample for the study was DMT2 patients and non-diabetic people age 50-70 years reside in Denpasar city. DMT2 patients were randomly selected with simple random technique, while non-diabetic peoples were non-randomly selected. The level of serum chromium was measured by AAS method, whereas microminerals intake were collected by a recall and SQ-FFQ method. Data was analyzed descriptively and differences were tested with two independent t-test at 95% confidence level.Results: The mean of serum chromium DMT2 and non-diabetic were 0.044 mg/L and 0.094 mg/L respectively. The mean±SEM magnesium (DMT2 316.1±22.4 mg/day; non-diabetic 211.0±33.5 mg/day), zinc intake was (DMT2 8.4±0.7 mg/day; non-diabetic 6.2±0.8 mg/day), and chromium (DMT2 10.8±1.3 µg/day; non-diabetic 8.7±0.9µg/day). A significant difference was found between magnesium intake (p=0.01).Conclusion: The study showed that zinc, magnesium and chromium intake is appeared higher among DMT2 patients compare to non-diabetic in Denpasar region.
