scholarly journals Enhancing the Effectiveness of Change Management in Private Universities: Case Study in Vietnam

Change management is known to be a significant model based on theories and practices from educational experts, educators, professors, school administrators, and even scientists. Like other higher education institutions in Vietnam, Private Universities in Ho Chi Minh city are a change management type organization. The management challenge facing contemporary universities refers to the multiple roles assumed by universities and the extraordinary increase in the number of subject fields, heightening, in turn, the complexity of the university environment. However, the previous research about change management of the Vietnamese private university system still has many shortcomings and limitations in terms of both size and quality. There is a lack of studies that have used Kotter's Model of Change (1996) to examine the evolutionary changes and challenges facing Private Universities. So, the main objective of this paper is to establish and propose a suitable model based on the apply Kotter's eight-step model of change to enhance effective change management in private universities in Ho Chi Minh City, and then discussion and recommendation will be presented in the study. To overcome the change challenges, some recommendation was proposed for the successful implementation of the changes for the university. Quantitative method has been utlised to complete this paper. Faced with the changing demands of the higher quality teaching profession, especially the increasing trend of studying at private universities leading to many initiatives on the issue of change and reforming the educational management model brings the effect so the university needs a planned sequential path. The purpose of this study is to examine the evolutionary changes and challenges facing the educational administration of private universities. From there, establish and propose a suitable model based on the apply Kotter's eight-step model of change to enhance effective change management in private universities in Ho Chi Minh City, and at the same time propose a model towards effective change management results across all private universities in Vietnam. Change efforts focus on enhancing faculty capacity to support diverse student success. The change process is planned using Kotter's (1996) eight-step change model and is, therefore, a regulated, linear, sequential change process. The initial steps were reviewed, and the strategies were considered workable. This approach enhances faculty acquisition and project success. Characterization of each step provides insight into ways to apply Kotter's model of change in higher education settings. The study examines demographic variables' role in academicians' proactive work behaviour (PWB) in private universities. Independent sample t-test and one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were performed using self-reported data from 287 academicians. Results show that academicians demonstrated moderate proactivity level. Male demonstrate higher proactiveness compared to females. Married workers score higher on PWB. An academician who holds a managerial position tends to be more proactive compared to others. Furthermore, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) holder displays a higher level of productivity. The findings offer practical suggestions to the university to address the situation and delegate job assignments based on individual differences. Educational administration programs are in desperate need of change. However, substantive change is unlikely given the rigidity of the university culture and its dysfunctional nature. The demand to change American universities has existed for over a century with little effect. However, faculty resistance, wrapped in a rigid culture, rejects competing ideologies. A new paradigm is needed if university preparation of school administrators is to be credible. One alternative paradigm is based on the relationship between the teacher and learner. In this paradigm, leadership is discovered rather than taught. It is a personal journey for the faculty member and student. The relationship between the teacher and student creates an opportunity for the discovery of different structures grounded in existential theory.

The broad question that interests this article is how does one read and compare the negotiations public and private universities are making with the neo-liberal paradigm of knowledge production with reference to their social science curricula. Michael Apple’s (1993, Teachers College Records, 95(2), 222–241; 2001, Currículo Sem Fronteiras, 1(1), i–xxvi) argument that curriculum is not a ‘neutral assemblage of knowledge’ but a crafted vision of ‘legitimate knowledge’ produced by hegemonic powers within society forms the theoretical foundation for this article. To understand the changes within a university’s academic practice, this article analyses and compares the undergraduate and postgraduate sociology curricula of two public universities (Delhi University and Ambedkar University), an international university (South Asian University) and one private university (Shiv Nadar University), as well as engages with its practitioners to assess the everyday within these universities. The undergraduate and postgraduate sociology curricula across public and private universities indicate certain convergences in their academic approaches. The universities in question encouraged foreign university collaborations, reframed the course structure to strengthen the university-industry linkages and increased the employability of the students. Interdisciplinary and contemporary papers are offered through new modes of pedagogy. The mode of assessment also focus on writing research papers/dissertations and frequent visits to the field to develop an application-based approach to learning. The neoliberal paradigm of knowledge production affected the convergence of academic practices of public and private universities despite difference in governance structure. This convergence problematises the meaning of ‘public’ in a liberalised, privatised and globalised society.

Student satisfaction at a university could predict the continuity of the university. Therefore understanding and improving student satisfaction needs to be done. This study provides an alternative model of student satisfaction instruments at private universities. The research methodology consists of a series of literature reviews, interviews, expert validation and testing the validity of the instrument using the Rasch model. The respondents of this study were 543 students from 6 faculties in a private university. Research findings include: (1) student satisfaction instrument models; (2) items that are difficult to approve; and (3) items perceived differently based on respondents' demographics. This research has implications for the management of private universities to improve some domains of student satisfaction.

Purpose – The core purpose of the study is to find the existing status of digital libraries (DLs) in university libraries of Bangladesh and to see whether university libraries of Bangladesh are ready to convert their traditional libraries into digital ones. Other purposes include: to explore the status of adoption of subscription-based e-resources among the university libraries in Bangladesh; to assess the level of information and communications technology skills of library and information science (LIS) professionals working in the university libraries; and to illustrate the government initiatives on digitization/DL development. Design/methodology/approach – The current study used the mixed methods, i.e. qualitative and quantitative. A questionnaire was prepared to assess the existing status of DL systems in university libraries of Bangladesh and to meet other purposes of the study. The population of the study included the heads of the public and private university librarians in Bangladesh. Several phone contacts were made for this study. A good number of e-mail addresses of the librarians of public and private universities in Bangladesh were collected over the phone. The study was conducted from June 2012 to September 2012. Of the 50 identified respondents, the author received 30 completed questionnaires. The heads of 18 public universities and 11 private universities and one international university responded to this study. Two responses were received by post. Therefore, the response rate for the current study is 60 per cent. Findings – As part of the government’s pledge to build “Digital Bangladesh”, several initiatives have been taken that are related to digitization, information development and developing repositories and e-services for citizens. However, not much initiative has been taken to develop nationwide DLs in Bangladesh. In terms of e-resource usage scenario, public university libraries are better in offering e-resources to its students and faculty members than private university libraries in Bangladesh. Finally, it turned out that the majority of the university libraries in Bangladesh are not ready to be digital. Lack of funds, lack of infrastructural support and lack of skilled LIS professionals are the main reasons hindering the development of DLs in the university libraries of Bangladesh. Originality/value – This study will help DL researchers around the world in getting information on the status of DLs in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh, policymakers, university authorities and LIS professionals in Bangladesh will highly benefited from this research. No study to find DL readiness of the universities has so far been conducted.

This research was carried out to examine the role of educational brand capital applied to private universities in El Salvador. For this purpose, the main contributions of the literature related to the study of brand capital and its application in the educational sector were analyzed, identifying which variables determine brand capital in the higher education sector. Once a suitable model was established, an empirical study was realized through a questionnaire in digital format, using a sample of 381 valid responses from undergraduate students from a private university in San Salvador (El Salvador). In order to validate the proposed construct, structural equation modeling will be applied, using SPSS v.19 and EQS 6.2 as working tools. The results obtained will show the repercussion of each variable of the brand capital relative to the determining variables, which are: brand awareness, brand image, perceived quality, and brand loyalty.

The study aims at acknowledging the impact of Open-book management on the types of organizational agility (sensing agility, decision-making agility, and acting agility) in the private universities / Kurdistan Region - Iraq. The study has used the analytical descriptive methodology, through using questionnaire to collect information from the members of the university councils in (11) private university in Kurdistan Region - Iraq. The sample of the study includes (91) members of the university councils. The statistical program (SPSS. V. 21) has been used to analysis the information collected and to get the results of the hypotheses testing. The main findings of the study were that the surveyed universities are practicing both of open-book management and organizational agility at high levels. The study also indicates that open-book management has a significant impact on organizational agility at the surveyed universities. A number of suggestions were presented focusing on that the private universities need to pay more attention to practice open-book management as it has a positive significant impact on achieving organizational agility.

The relationship between the university services marketing and the leading orientation and their impact in enhancing the university reputation: Field study on a sample of administrative leaders in       private universities in the Erbil city Objective - The current study try to find the role of marketing university services (educational services, research services, community services) and the leading orientation (research mobilization, distinction, cooperation, university policies, proactive) as independent variables in enhancing the university's reputation as dependent a variable (Social responsibility, innovation, quality of service, image of the organization) in a sample of private universities in the Erbil city. Methodology of the study - The problem of the study was determined in several questions related to the nature of the correlation relationship - the effect of independent study variables (marketing of university services and leadership orientation) and the dependent variable (the reputation of the university). For this purpose, the hypotheses were subjected to multiple tests. The study used the questionnaire as a means to obtain data from the administrative leaders of the investigated universities. - The study was used the analytical descriptive method. The main and sub-variables were described and correlation and effect relationships were analyzed between the variables using advanced statistical methods (arithmetic mean, standard deviation, percentages, Pearson correlation, multiple regression test) , And the implementation of the statistical program (SPSS-Ver.18). The study was conducted in the educational sector in the city of Erbil, in order to obtain the necessary information for the field through a questionnaire prepared for this purpose and distributed to six universities. The number of respondents was (73) (Presidents of universities, their assistants, deans, their assistants, heads of departments) at the universities in question. The value of the study: The main conclusions of the study are the existence of a significant relationship between the variables of the study and the existence of a significant effect of the independent variable marketing of university services and the leading trend in the dependent variable universities reputation and the existence of variation of the effect of independent variables in the dependent variable in the universities investigated, A set of recommendations, the most important of which is the establishment of a center for the marketing of services at the university level and at the level of each college. In order to conduct a continuous study of the labor market to determine market needs, the university should be aware of the importance of marketing orientation in university education
