The process of social interaction in the community is very close to communication and culture because of the harmonious reciprocal relationship. Culture and communication influence each other. Cultural differences will have the potential to cause uncertainty and anxiety disorders, so that the possibility of cultural shock occurs. The existence of a shift in the value of diversity, an important role of intercultural communication in bridging the obstacles to understanding society can be explained by intercultural interactions so as not to cause misunderstandings. This article analyzes the role of intercultural communication in religious interactions at Pura Bukit Kampung Anyar Karangasem using qualitative research methods. The results showed that: first, the historical background of the conquest of the Karangasem Kingdom over Lombok. Second, the process of adaptation and intercultural interaction carried out by Hindus and Sasak Bayan ethnic people creates religious social beliefs. Third, intercultural communication has implications for socio-religious interactions, such as: implications for religious values, implications for socializing activities, implications for the value of solidarity, and implications for the value of tolerance.

Abstract Abdul Hay Kurban Ali’s arrival in Japan in 1924 has a huge impact on the development of Islam and towards the Muslim community in Tokyo Japan. The migration of the Turkic Tatar Muslim to Japan resulting from the Russian Revolution un 1917 has cause several Islamic Associations to emerge in Japan. Abdul Hay Kurban Ali was the leader of one of this Islamic Association for the Muslim community representing the Turkic-Tatar Muslim in Japan under the name Mahalla Islamiya. With this, Abdul Hay Kurban Ali has carried the interests from each of the Islamic Association from the Muslim community in Japan to build education institution and mosque in Tokyo, Japan. As such, Abdul Hay Kurban Ali cooperate with Syeikh Abdul Rashid Ibrahim in creating good relationship between Turkey and Japan to ease the construction of education institution and mosque in Tokyo, Japan. This research is a qualitative research using the historical history design. This research used the documentation method through data collection that focus on sources under four themes which is historical background of Abdul Hay Kurban Ali, the arrival of Islam in Japan, the role of Da’wah by Abdul Hay Kurban Ali and his contributions in Tokyo, Japan. Meanwhile, the researcher use descriptive and historical methods in analysing the data and sources under the prescribed themes. The finding from the research showed that the four thematic analyses has given a clear and organized information. The role of Abdul Hay Kurban towards the development of Islam in Tokyo, Japan is very significant for the Da’wah aspect towards the Japanese community, the Islamic Association of the Muslim community and the construction of education institution and mosque. Penghijrahan komuniti Muslim Turki Tatar ke Jepun akibat revolusi Rusia pada tahun 1917 telah menyebabkan wujudnya beberapa persatuan-persatuan Islam di Jepun. Abdul Hay Kurban Ali telah mengetuai salah satu daripada persatuan komuniti Muslim bagi bangsa Turki-Tatar di Jepun, Mahalla Islamiya. Menerusi hal ini, Abdul Hay Kurban Ali telah membawa hasrat daripada setiap persatuan-persatuan komuniti Muslim di Jepun untuk membina institusi pendidikan dan masjid di Tokyo, Jepun. Oleh itu, Abdul Hay Kurban Ali bekerjasama dengan Syeikh Abdul Rashid Ibrahim untuk mengadakan hubungan baik bersama kerajaan Turki dan Jepun bagi memudahkan pembinaan institusi pendidikan dan masjid di Tokyo, Jepun. Kajian Ini merupakan kajian berbentuk kualitatif dengan menggunakan reka bentuk kajian sejarah. Kajian ini menggunakan metode dokumentasi melalui pengumpulan data dengan menfokuskan pada sumber-sumber yang berkaitan empat tema iaitu, sejarah latar belakang Abdul Hay Kurban Ali, kedatangan Islam di Jepun, peranan dakwah Abdul Hay Kurban Ali dan sumbangan beliau di Tokyo, Jepun. Manakala pengkaji menggunakan metode deskriptif dan metode sejarah untuk menganalisis data-data dan sumber-sumber menerusi tema yang ditetapkan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa sumber-sumber menerusi empat tematik yang dikaji oleh pengkaji telah memberikan maklumat yang tersusun dan jelas. Peranan Abdul Hay Kurban Ali terhadap perkembangan Islam di Tokyo, Jepun amat besar jasanya dari aspek dakwah kepada komuniti Jepun, penyatuan persatuan-persatuan komuniti Muslim dan pembinaan institusi pendidikan dan masjid. This article focuses on the reflexive dynamics of interviewing in the context of a recent qualitative investigation of ethnic majority views of national identity in England. There is now an established literature which specifies the routine mobilisations of national identity through the course of everyday social interaction. Discourse studies also have been centrally concerned with the interview-as-topic and there is considerable work here on ethnic and racial categorizations within the interview context. Taking such work as its departure point, this article will illustrate how and why the interviewer also matters in talking about national identity. While the role of the interviewer is increasingly acknowledged in qualitative research, there has been little attempt to consider this particular methodological dilemma in nationalism research. In highlighting this problem, this article argues in favour of a more reflexive approach to the study of nationalism and national identity, one which brings to bear the researchers’ own unwitting assumptions and involvement.

This article draws on the findings of qualitative research on the ways in which the domestication of sexual objects, such as vibrators, is central to relationships amongst (non)household members and social interaction within the home. Interviews with a purposive sample of 32 female participants were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis. In analyzing experiences and complex senses of belonging, the paper identified different circumstances and issues of public presentation and private realization that lie behind the meaning and use of vibrators. I suggest that objects, such as vibrators, come to be experienced as offering emotional, spatial, relational, and moral structures of both social integration and social distancing. All objects, even sex toys, contain culture, and by examining the domestication of such objects we can enrich knowledge of the affordances that constitute the materiality of sex.

This type of research is qualitative research, using the descriptive approach, which seeks to describe a social phenomenon. In other words, this study aims to describe the nature of something that is taking place at the time of the study. This research uses data collection techniques with in-depth interviews, observation and literature study. The results of this research is there are different cultural patterns between the Batak ethnic students in UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta with the indigenous people of Yogyakarta. The Batak ethnic students in UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta has a Low Context cultural patterns and masculinity, while the indigenous people of Yogyakarta has a High Context cultural patterns and Femininity. Communcation patern that exists between the Batak ethnic students in UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta with the indigenous people of Yogyakarta has entered a stage of dynamic intercultural communication having been through an interactive stage and transactional. Intercultural communication that occurs, namely: the uses of language, perception, nonverbal forms of communication, food and social interaction. The theory of politeness suggests strategies in social interaction by which a person can use to save the hearer’s face upon the effect of face-threatening acts or FTAs. Face threatening acts are described by Brown and Levinson as the acts that infringe the hearer’s need of maintaining his/her self-esteem and be respected. Brown and Levinson accepted that the notion of face is respected as universal norms or values subscribed to by the members of the society. In that regard, this article provides a discussion about various viewpoints on the debate of universality of politeness theory and criticisms addressed by eastern-pragmaticists that this theory should not be seen as universally applicable. Cultural differences, as suggested by non-western pragmaticists, accord what is accepted in the context of face in western culture to be not accepted in other cultures. Therefeore, although we accept that Brown & Levinson’s theory has made a significant breakthrough in elaborating politeness, appropriation of this theory should be accounted in intercultural communication instead to accept it as universal.

The aim of the study is to determine the role of intercultural competence in the adaptation process of foreign students studying at Russian universities. The research is based on the author's model of intercultural competence, the main components of which are intercultural stability, intercultural interest, the lack of ethnocentrism and the management of intercultural interaction. The sample of the study consisted of 291 foreign students from Turkmenistan studying at universities in Kazan, Saratov, Penza, Rostov-on-Don, Khabarovsk, 291 students (48.5% — Women, average age is 22 years). We showed that intercultural com petence is a significant predictor in the adaptation of foreign students. We revealed different contribution of intercultural competence components to the effectiveness in the adaptation of foreign students. Among the components of intercultural competence only intercultural stability directly affects sociocultural adaptation. The absence of ethnocentrism reduces the effect of culture shock when a student enters a new cultural environment, but increases the success of his/her adaptation in this environment only together with intercultural stability. Two other components of intercultural competence: intercultural interest and the management of intercultural interaction have an impact on the successful adaptation of foreign students not directly, but through the activation of the desire to interact with Russian students and to increase the self-esteem in the effectiveness of intercultural communication with them. In turn these mediators are directly related to both psychological adaptation and intercultural stability. Thus we revealed the mechanism of intercultural competence influence on the adaptation of foreign students. The obtained results can be used to predict the adaptation of foreign students and to reduce the possible risks of their maladjustment in a new culture.

This paper is based on results of the research project National stereotypes and marketing strategies in the intercultural Danish-German communication (SMiK). In the SMiK-project, we define stereotypes as linguistically and culturally determined patterns of thinking and behaving. Such patterns affect intercultural interactions and they should therefore be taken into consideration in the teaching of foreign languages and in intercultural communication. In the SMiK-project we have developed guidelines for the adequate intercultural interaction in the German-Danish business communication. Those guidelines are based on empirical studies on German-Danish national stereotypes. In this paper, we will discuss the theoretical and methodological approach to the compilation of these guidelines and their background in studies on intercultural communication and in the Sprachkritik-paradigm (a linguistically founded critical-reflecting appraisal of language use) will be described. We hereby focus on the concepts of ‘Weltansichten’ as conceptualizations of the world, cultural awareness and functional adequacy in the intercultural communication. Finally, we give examples for the implementation of the results from an analyses of interview data in guidelines for Danish-German business communication.

As many as 100,000 American business executives work overseas at any given time, while increasing numbers of foreign executives are coming to the United States, often for periods of several years. At the same time, many American institutions, such as schools and hospitals, are finding that their personnel must deal with a wide variety of intercultural situations without ever leaving the United States. In most cases, those involved in intercultural interaction, whether in the United States or overseas, have little preparation for or understanding of cultural differences, and they frequently have difficulty dealing with the situations they face.

The paper offers a contribution to the discussion of the role of intercultural issues in dialogue between Christian churches representing differing doctrinal positions. It argues that ecumenical dialogues have in the past focused on doctrinal issues at the expense of cultural differences, which may be just as significant in the relationships, including understandings and misunderstandings, between churches. It proposes that expertise on intercultural communication be also part of ecumenical dialogue. This argument shall be developed in several stages: first, a discussion of belief statements as cultural artefacts; second, a discussion of a recent study of the dynamics of intercultural communication, a study that draws on Bakhtin’s concept of dialogue; and finally the proposal for the application to ecumenical dialogue of the study’s methodological approach to intercultural communication.
