Background: Schizophrenia is one of the most common forms of mental disorders in Indonesia. Effective treatments for mental disorders are coming from themselves (WHO, 2018), for some mental disorders require empowerment, one of which is Self Help Group therapy. Self Help Group aims to develop empathy among fellow group members where fellow group members provide mutual support to form adaptive coping. This study aims to determine the effect of empowering patients with the Self Help Group approach to coping mechanisms in patients with schizophrenic mental disorders. Method: The research is quasi-experiment with a pre-post test design with a control group design. Data were taken before and after the administration of self-help intervention groups in schizophrenia in the intervention group. The number of samples is 66 clients divided by 2, namely 33 respondents for the intervention group and 33 respondents for the control group. This study measured coping mechanisms. The research instrument used a coping mechanism questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a dependent t-test, independent multiple linear regression t-test. Results: The study proved that there are significant differences in the coping mechanism before and after giving the Self Help Group (p-value, 0.000). Self Help Group if implemented by the patient has the opportunity to improve coping mechanisms by 20.1% and is expected to improve the coping mechanism by 4.909 points. Conclusion: The Self Help Group used for interventions is considered effective to increase coping skills.

Abstract Background: A self-help workbook is expected to support cancer patients to cope with physical and psychosocial distress, to facilitate communication with medical staff, and to improve quality of life (QOL). We conducted a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-help workbook intervention on QOL and survival. Methods: From June 2014 to March 2015, patients with breast, colorectal, gastric, and lung cancer receiving outpatient chemotherapy were randomized into an intervention group (n = 100) or control group (n = 100). Intervention group participants received workbooks originally made for this study, read advice on how to cope with distress, and filled out questionnaires on the workbooks periodically. EORTC QLQ-C30 was evaluated at baseline, at 12 weeks, and at 24 weeks. The primary endpoint was Global Health Status / QOL scale (GQOL). Results: No significant interaction was observed between the intervention and time in terms of GQOL or any of the functional scales. Among the 69 patients who continued cytotoxic chemotherapy at 24 weeks, the intervention was significantly associated with improved emotional functioning scores (P = 0.0007). Overall survival was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: Self-help workbook intervention was feasible in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Although the effect of the intervention was limited, the intervention may improve emotional functioning among patients who receive long-term cytotoxic chemotherapy.Trial registration: UMIN Clinical Trials Registry, UMIN000012842. The sampling technique used purposive sampling which a research sample of 36 respondents divided into 18 respondents in each control and treatment group. The results of this study showed that the average score of family quality of life in caring for schizophrenia patients in the control group before the health education intervention was 88.5 and after intervention was 92.78, while before the intervention in the treatment group was 87.28 and after it was 111.06. The result have significant ρ-value of 0,000 was also obtained, which means that there are differences in the quality of family life in caring for schizophrenic patients after being given intervention in the control and treatment groups. So it can be concluded that SHG is one of therapy applied as an intervention for families in order to improve their quality of life while caring for schizophrenia patients. Keywords: schizophrenia, family, quality of life, self-help group

Background: Chronic schizophrenia is a long-term and severe mental disorder. Aerobic exercises can reduce the symptoms of mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia, through improving the patient's quality of life (QoL). Objectives: The current study aimed to investigate the effect of aerobic exercise on the QoL of male schizophrenics hospitalized at the Razi Psychiatric Center in Tabriz from 2015 to 2016. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 68 patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into groups of intervention (n = 34) and control (n = 34). The intervention group has benefited from the aerobic exercise 24 sessions for 8 weeks, 12 hours in total. The control group simultaneously enjoyed the fresh air. The Schizophrenic Quality of Life Scale (SQLS) was completed before and after intervention in both groups. The data were analyzed in SPSS20 using the t-test and chi-squared test. Results: The mean age of participants was 37.82 ± 7.14 years. No significant differences were found between the demographic characteristics of the two groups. This study showed that no significant difference was found in the quality of life in both groups before intervention (P ≤ 0.37), but there was a significant difference after the intervention (P = 0.001). Aerobic exercises reduce patient's mental disorders and promote their QoL (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Regular aerobic exercise can reduce the symptoms of male patients with schizophrenics, which in turn improves all dimensions of QoL

Objectives. To study the effect of self-management intervention programs based on the health belief model and planned behavior theory on self-management behavior and quality of life in middle-aged stroke patients. Most of the intervention studies on the self-management of middle-aged stroke patients focus on traditional Chinese medicine nursing and continuous nursing, lacking theoretical support. In particular, there is a lack of interventions based on the integration of two or more theories. Method. The middle-aged stroke patients were divided into the control group and the intervention group according to the disease area. A total of 70 patients were included, and 35 patients were included in the control group and the intervention group, respectively. The control group received routine neurological treatment and health education during hospitalization and continued to receive routine health education for 3 months after discharge. On this basis, the intervention group received an intervention program based on an integrated model of health beliefs and planned behavior theory, including 3 health education sessions during hospitalization and 3 months of postdischarge health education. A self-administered stroke general information questionnaire was used to collect basic information on patients’ age, gender, and comorbidities. The Stroke Self-Management Behavior Rating Scale and Stroke-Specific Quality-of-Life Scale (SS-QOL) were used to evaluate the management behavior and quality of life of the patients in both groups before and after the intervention. Results. Before the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of self-management score, quality of life total score, and scores of each dimension P > 0.05 . At different periods after the intervention, the total score of self-management, total score of quality of life, and scores of each dimension were significantly higher in both groups than before the intervention P < 0.05 . In particular, the self-management and quality of life scores of the intervention group were higher than those of the control group at 1 and 3 months after the intervention P < 0.05 . Conclusion. The self-management intervention scheme based on the integrated model of health belief and planned behavior theory is beneficial to improve the self-management ability and quality of life of stroke patients. It provides basis for clinical nurses to further improve the self-management ability and quality of life of stroke patients. Our findings may also serve as a reference for caregivers in other countries to improve the self-management and quality of life of stroke patients.
