The investigation on the effect of adding silane modified chopped E-glass fibre and Aluminium metal wire-mesh into nano silica toughened nylon 6-6 thermoplastic composites on mechanical, drop load impact, fatigue and tribological behaviour is studied in this paper. The primary aim of this research work is to develop a hybrid Nylon 6-6 nanocomposites having high stiffness, toughness and wear resistance. The chopped glass fibre and Al wire-mesh was surface treated with the help of 3-Aminopropyletrimethoxylane (silane) and acid etching. The tensile results revealed that additions of glass fibre and Al mesh into nano - silica toughened nylon 6-6 composite gives improved tensile and flexural strength. Similarly, the Izod impact strength of Al-mesh reinforced nano silica (1vol.%) toughened nylon 6-6 gives superior energy absorption up to 6 Joules/cm. The drop load impact penetration of composite N3 (59% - Nylon 66, 20% - E-glass fibre, 20% - Al wire mesh and 1 % - nano silica) shows very limited penetration than other composites. Highest fatigue life of 16391 cycles was observed for the composite designated N3, which contains 1 vol.% of nano silica, whereas the composite containing 2 vol.% of nano silica gives very lower specific wear rate and Co-efficient of friction. The developed composite which has better modulus, stiffness, wear resistance and fatigue life could be possibly used in automobile power transmission gears, domestic equipment and farm related machineries.

The main objective of this work was to study the influence of the wear properties of two commercial alloys (CK45 and Al7175) on their fretting fatigue behavior. It is verified the effect of material local degradation by wear on a fatigue strength reduction factor, namely the stress concentration factor, and on the overall fretting fatigue life of these materials. The fretting fatigue phenomenon is a synergetic effect between wear and fatigue. It is dependent on both the fatigue and the wear properties of the materials. Material properties promoting an increase in wear resistance should enhance fretting fatigue life.

The aim of the study was to investigate effect of Ti/TiB2 composite composition and manufacturing technology parameters on the tribological behaviour of AlCrN coating-composite system. The AlCrN coating was deposited by PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) method. The composites were manufactured by spark plasma sintering (SPS) from three variants of powders mixtures: Ti with TiB2, Ti6Al4V with TiB2 as well as Ti with B, using (five) different sintering temperatures. For each of the developed coating-composite systems, the wear resistance was evaluated using ball-on-disc SRV tester, at six temperatures (from room temperature up to 900 °C). The results confirmed that high-temperature wear resistance of the coating–substrate combination depends on Ti/TiB2 composite composition and manufacturing technology parameters. In the case of uncoated composite, two processes manage the wear at high temperatures: cracking propagation and surface oxidation. The presence of AlCrN coating on the composite surface protects the surface against deep cracking and surface oxidation. The composites of Group I, sintered at 1250 °C from a mixture of pure Ti and TiB2 (50/50 wt.% ratio) as well as Group III, sintered at 1350 °C from a mixture of pure Ti and B allow the achievement of a satisfactory surface quality, a high adhesion of the PVD coating and moderate wear at high temperatures. However, the composite made of pure Ti and B seems to be a better solution for temperatures exceeding 600 °C.

This research work studies the characteristics of wear and wear resistance of composite powder coatings, deposited by high-velocity oxygen fuel, which contain composite mixtures Ni-Cr-B-Si having different chromium concentrations – 9.9%; 13.2%; 14%; 16% and 20% , at one and the same size of the particles and the same content of the remaining elements. The coating of 20% Cr does not contain B and Si. Out of each powder, composite coatings have been prepared without any preliminary thermal treatment of the substrate and with preliminary thermal treatment of the substrate up to 650оС. The coatings have been tested under identical conditions of dry friction over a surface of solid firmly attached abrasive particles using the tribological testing device „Pin-on-disk“. Results have been obtained and the dependences of the hardness, mass wear, intensity of the wearing process, absolute and relative wear resistance on the Cr concentration under identical conditions of friction. It has been found out that for all the coatings the preliminary thermal treatment of the substrate leads to a decrease in the wear intensity. Upon increasing Cr concentration the wear intensity diminishes and it reaches minimal values at 16% Cr. In the case of coatings having 20% Cr concentration, the wear intensity is increased, which is due to the absence of the components B and Si in the composite mixture, whereupon no inter-metallic structures are formed having high hardness and wear resistance. The obtained results have no analogues in the current literature and they have not been published by the authors.

AbstractThe wear resistance and the mechanical properties of polymer matrix composite fibers filled with inorganic fillers have been investigated in order to find out the way to increase the wear resistance of the fibers without losing tensile modulus and strength. Nylon 6 and poly(ethylene terephthalate) have been used as the matrix polymer and aluminum borate whisker and carbon nanotube have been used as the fillers. The wear resistance of the fibers has been evaluated by observing the fiber cross section after the side of the fiber was worn using a rotating drum covered with abrasive paper. The wear resistance of the nylon 6 and PET fibers was increased by the addition of these fillers without the loss of tensile modulus and strength. The effects of the addition of the fillers on the wear resistance have been compared with the effects of stretching and heat treatment of the fibers.

The current work focuses on enhancing wear resistance due to the presence of reinforcements and the effect of ageing treatment on hybrid composites of Al6061-SiC+B4C. By varying weight percentage, two kinds of reinforcements, viz. silicon carbide and boron carbide, were prepared for hybrid composites by the liquid state process known as the method of stir casting. The solutionising temperature of 550 °C for 2 hours and ageing temperature of 100-200°C at different time intervals were used for both Al6061 alloy and its composites during heat treatment. Microstructural and mechanical characterisation were carried out using a standard testing procedure. Compared to Al6061 matrix alloy, artificially peak aged composites show 100-140% improvement in hardness due to harder reinforcements and precipitation of solute rich secondary phases during ageing treatment. Overall, an 80-100% increase in wear resistance observed during peak ageing of hybrid composites. Analysis of Al6061 matrix alloy wear out surface shows extensive grooving and ploughing of the surface with the matrix material smear at many spots. The presence of tribolayer in Al6061-SiC+B4C composites shows a smoother surface than the Al6061 matrix alloy, which results in an excellent lubrication effect during an improvement in wear resistance. The wear surface of base aluminium alloy doesn’t show the existence of iron in the tribolayer. The research work is significant in forming a thermally activated wear-resistant metallic tribolayer with good tribological properties.
