The stem radial increment contains information on the tree growth, development, and condition. The early and late wood increment has essential features. The increment dynamics contains monotonous and cyclic components. Retrospective and predictive assessments of growth and development of a tree and a stand based on the patterns of radial increment are possible. The purpose of the article is to analyze the properties of the components and their contribution to the increment dynamics of oak early and late wood, depending on the favorability of growth period and the crown development. The research object was the artificial upland oak forest of the first quality class (pure in composition). Two periods of growth were considered: 1st – favorable (1968–1996) and 2nd – unfavourable (1997–2014). We studied three groups of oak, each group of 10 trees. The groups were distinguished by the development of crown (original classification) and its dynamics. The stem cores were taken at a height of 1.3 m from the southeast side. Indicators of radial increment were defined in the images of cores scanned at 1200 dpi resolution. Three components of the dynamics were identified: a long-term trend and cyclic components with 12- and 2–5-year cycles. The variability of cyclic components of the dynamics of early wood increment was more than twice lower, than that of the late wood. The contribution of the component with 2–5-year cyclicity to the dynamics of early and late wood increment prevails during the favorable period of growth. The contribution of the component with 12-year cyclicity increases during the unfavorable period and the more, the less developed the crowns. The transition of the radial increment to a lower level occurred during the minimum of the component with 12-year cyclicity. There is no significant correlation between early and late wood increment of the component with 2–5-year cyclicity, which makes the major contribution to their ratio. The correlation between early and late wood increment of other components is closer during the unfavorable period and with a decline in crown development. The correlation between the early and late wood increment of the previous year is closer than that of the same year.

This chapter analyzes the role Israeli economists have played as purveyors of pro-market economic ideas and political entrepreneurs of economic liberalization in Israel. Israeli economists were strongly committed to economic liberalism already in the 1950s, but they were lacking decisive political influence. Two mechanisms increased their power over policy. First, long-term institutional changes gradually eroded “political” decision-making mechanism and opened the way to greater involvement of professional economists. This long-term trend was joined and reinforced by economists’ institutional entrepreneurship at the height of the 1980s economic crisis, when they initiated changes of macroeconomic governance. These changes enhanced the political power of the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Israel and supported the institutionalization of neoliberalism in Israel.

We report greater than 10-year outcomes in duplicated thumbs following corrective cartilaginous resection during the growth period. We have undertaken corrective resection of cartilaginous joint connections based on intraoperative arthrographic findings to reconstruct favourable alignment in six Wassel Type II and IV thumb duplication in six patients. The age at surgery was 13 months (range 10–15), and the average post-surgical follow-up was 134 months (range 120–160). We observed five excellent and one good outcome using the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Hand scoring method. Favourable joint congruency and alignment were preserved, and no growth plate arrest or joint space narrowing was present more than 10 years after surgery. We conclude that corrective resection of the cartilaginous joint based on intraoperative arthrographic findings has long-term reliability for duplicated thumbs, especially those of Wassel Type II and IV, which have a cartilaginous joint connection. Levels of evidence: IV

AbstractA dataset entitled “A potential risk index dataset for landfalling tropical cyclones over the Chinese mainland” (PRITC dataset V1.0) is described in this paper, as are some basic statistical analyses. Estimating the severity of the impacts of tropical cyclones (TCs) that make landfall on the Chinese mainland based on observations from 1401 meteorological stations was proposed in a previous study, including an index combining TC-induced precipitation and wind (IPWT) and further information, such as the corresponding category level (CAT_IPWT), an index of TC-induced wind (IWT), and an index of TC-induced precipitation (IPT). The current version of the dataset includes TCs that made landfall from 1949–2018; the dataset will be extended each year. Long-term trend analyses demonstrate that the severity of the TC impacts on the Chinese mainland have increased, as embodied by the annual mean IPWT values, and increases in TCinduced precipitation are the main contributor to this increase. TC Winnie (1997) and TC Bilis (2006) were the two TCs with the highest IPWT and IPT values, respectively. The PRITC V1.0 dataset was developed based on the China Meteorological Administration’s tropical cyclone database and can serve as a bridge between TC hazards and their social and economic impacts.

In this study, we investigated extreme droughts in the Indochina peninsula and their relationship with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) mode. Areas most vulnerable to drought were analyzed via statistical simulations of the IOD based on historical observations. Results of the long-term trend analysis indicate that areas with increasing spring (March–May) rainfall are mainly distributed along the eastern coast (Vietnam) and the northwestern portions of the Indochina Peninsula (ICP), while Central and Northern Laos and Northern Cambodia have witnessed a reduction in spring rainfall over the past few decades. This trend is similar to that of extreme drought. During positive IOD years, the frequency of extreme droughts was reduced throughout Vietnam and in the southwestern parts of China, while increased drought was observed in Cambodia, Central Laos, and along the coastline adjacent to the Myanmar Sea. Results for negative IOD years were similar to changes observed for positive IOD years; however, the eastern and northern parts of the ICP experienced reduced droughts. In addition, the results of the statistical simulations proposed in this study successfully simulate drought-sensitive areas and evolution patterns of various IOD changes. The results of this study can help improve diagnostic techniques for extreme droughts in the ICP.
