✓ Auditory function was studied before and after surgery in 143 consecutive patients who were operated on for hemifacial spasm by microvascular decompression of the intracranial portion of the facial nerve. The acoustic middle ear reflex was abnormal preoperatively in 41% of the patients, indicating that the vascular abnormalities that caused the hemifacial spasm also affected the auditory nerve. Three patients suffered a profound hearing loss in the ear on the operated side, and one lost hearing function totally. In addition, 24 patients had a moderate elevation in the pure-tone threshold at one or more octave frequencies. Of these, 16 patients experienced a hearing loss at only one frequency (8000 Hz), while eight had a threshold evaluation of no more than 20 dB in the speech frequency range (500, 1000, and 2000 Hz). Two patients were deaf on the side of the spasm before the operation. Three patients were not tested postoperatively, and one patient was tested only after surgery. Thus, in this series of 143 patients, only 2.8% suffered a significant hearing loss as a complication of facial nerve decompression to relieve hemifacial spasm.

The use of mobile phones has become increasingly popular in recent years and it is more prevalent among university students. The widespread usage of cell phones has attracted the attention of many students, thereby increasing their rate of cell phone dependency. This study aimed to describe cell phone behaviours among undergraduate regular students at the University of Cape Coast. A survey research design was adopted for the study. Through the use of the stratified sampling technique, a sample of 2,061 undergraduate regular students participated in the study. Questionnaire adapted from Choliz’s (2012) Test of Mobile-phone Dependence (TMD) was used. The internal consistency, estimated using McDonald’s omega coefficient, ranged from .84 to .95. Means and standard deviations were used in analyzing the data for the study. The findings of the study revealed that students were prevalent in the use of cell phones in sending text messages, followed by surfing of the internet, length of time spent on the cell phone, and use of cell phone as a source of entertainment. It was recommended among other things that students should consciously regulate their use of cell phones so that it does not jeopardize their academic work.

Abstract Increased life expectancy in persons with Down syndrome (DS) is associated with premature age-related changes. The aim of this study was to assess auditory function in adults with DS and to evaluate the prevalence of hearing loss in this population. Audiometric tests were performed in 72 adults with DS (mean age 37.3±10.1 years, 51.4% females). Air conduction pure tone average (PTA) thresholds at frequencies 0.5-1-2-4 kHz were calculated to assess hearing function. Hearing loss was present if the PTA threshold was > 20 dB hearing level. Higher frequencies of 4 and 8 kHz were also assessed. Hearing loss was shown in 47 (65.3%) participants. The prevalence of hearing loss increased with age, ranging from 42.86% in the 20-29 years group to 90.91% in the 50-59 years group. High frequencies (4 and 8 kHz) were more often impaired than other frequencies used to measure PTA. Thus, the study concluded hearing loss is common in adults with DS and shows a pattern compatible with precocious aging of the hearing system. Auditory evaluation is strongly recommended in adults with DS.

The study used qualitative research methods. The research is intended to know and understand in more detail related to the phenomenon of what is experienced by the subject to be investigated, through various data collection techniques conducted by researchers to obtain data on "Family Communication Patterns between Daughter-in-law and In-laws who live in one house in Bendrong Village Jabung District”. The problem is analyzed using the Rogers and Kincaid paradigms. The research method used was descriptive qualitative and the sampling technique used was puposive sampling by interviewing 6 informants in Bendrong village. Data collection taken using interview guides, observations and documentation. While data analysis is collecting data, reducing data, presenting data and drawing and conclusions. The results of the study revealed that where the pattern of communication between in-laws and in-laws often exchanges information, as shown in the chart above, where in-laws are usually the speakers or can be referred to as communicators, while the sons-in-law as recipients of messages or communicants, but usually often exchange positions within the period specific time and situation. Messages or information conveyed both by in-laws and in-laws are usually spoken directly or face to face or indirectly such as through social media mobile phones. In this case there is a reciprocal relationship between the two. Thus, the relationship between the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law who tends to conflict will get worse if the two of them live together, because the high intensity of confusion results in a higher chance of friction.

Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a way of collecting data in people’s natural environments in real time and has become very popular in social and health sciences. The emergence of personal digital assistants has led to more complex and sophisticated EMA protocols but has also highlighted some important drawbacks. Modern cell phones combine the functionalities of advanced communication systems with those of a handheld computer and offer various additional features to capture and record sound, pictures, locations, and movements. Moreover, most people own a cell phone, are familiar with the different functions, and always carry it with them. This paper describes ways in which cell phones have been used for data collection purposes in the field of social sciences. This includes automated data capture techniques, for example, geolocation for the study of mobility patterns and the use of external sensors for remote health-monitoring research. The paper also describes cell phones as efficient and user-friendly tools for prompt manual data collection, that is, by asking participants to produce or to provide data. This can either be done by means of dedicated applications or by simply using the web browser. We conclude that cell phones offer a variety of advantages and have a great deal of potential for innovative research designs, suggesting they will be among the standard data collection devices for EMA in the coming years.
