Due to relatively complex geometry of N219 winglets, CFD simulations have to be conducted to predict the aerodynamic load by the structure in some critical flight conditions. Since the aerodynamic CFD model is not the same as the finite element model of the structure, there is a need to accurately transform the load data between the two models. This paper discusses a simple alternative technique to map pressure distribution from the mesh or face zone of a CFD simulation to an FEM model using a Matlab based in-house code program. The technique focuses on how an FEM shell element has same pressure value with its nearest CFD element. Although the cumulative forces sometimes give different result, the pressure distribution is highly accurate, moreover when the FEM model has smoother elements. Validation has been conducted by comparing with other pressure mapping technique of a commercial software Patran. The results show a good agreement where the present technique provide a more accurate result especially for the critical biggest load among the cumulative forces in the three-dimensional direction. The proposed technique is currently suitable to evaluate loading characteristics of semi monocoque structures. A further treatment of the technique for other types of structure is currently under development.

AbstractThe determination of structural loads plays an important role in the certification process of new aircraft. Strain gauges are usually used to measure and monitor the structural loads encountered during the flight test program. However, a time-consuming wiring and calibration process is required to determine the forces and moments from the measured strains. Sensors based on MEMS provide an alternative way to determine loads from the measured aerodynamic pressure distribution around the structural component. Flight tests were performed with a research glider aircraft to investigate the flight loads determined with the strain based and the pressure based measurement technology. A wing glove equipped with 64 MEMS pressure sensors was developed for measuring the pressure distribution around a selected wing section. The wing shear force determined with both load determination methods were compared to each other. Several flight maneuvers with varying loads were performed during the flight test program. This paper concentrates on the evaluation of dynamic flight maneuvers including Stalls and Pull-Up Push-Over maneuvers. The effects of changes in the aerodynamic flow characteristics during the maneuver could be detected directly with the pressure sensors based on MEMS. Time histories of the measured pressure distributions and the wing shear forces are presented and discussed.

The effect of the residual stresses and strains is one of the most important parameter in the structure integrity assessment. A finite element model is constructed in order to simulate the multi passes mismatched submerged arc welding SAW which used in the welded tensile test specimen. Sequentially coupled thermal mechanical analysis is done by using ABAQUS software for calculating the residual stresses and distortion due to welding. In this work, three main issues were studied in order to reduce the time consuming during welding simulation which is the major problem in the computational welding mechanics (CWM). The first issue is dimensionality of the problem. Both two- and three-dimensional models are constructed for the same analysis type, shell element for two dimension simulation shows good performance comparing with brick element. The conventional method to calculate residual stress is by using implicit scheme that because of the welding and cooling time is relatively high. In this work, the author shows that it could use the explicit scheme with the mass scaling technique, and time consuming during the analysis will be reduced very efficiently. By using this new technique, it will be possible to simulate relatively large three dimensional structures.

There is a potential for major damage to the pipelines crossing faults, therefore the strain-based design method is essential for the design of buried pipelines. Finite element models based on soil springs which are able to accurately predict pipelines’ responses to such faulting are recommended by some international guidelines. In this paper, a comparative analysis was carried out among four widely used models (beam element model; shell element model with fixed boundary; shell element model with beam coupled; shell element model with equivalent boundary) in two aspects: differences of results and the efficiency of calculation. The results show that the maximum and minimum strains of models coincided with each other under allowable strain and the calculation efficiency of beam element model was the highest. Besides, the shell element model with beam coupled or equivalent boundary provided the reasonable results and the calculation efficiency of them were higher than the one with fixed boundary. In addition, shell element model with beam coupled had a broader applicability.

We developed a finite element model (FEM) of the equine stifle joint to identify pressure peaks and simulate translocation and deformation of the menisci. A series of sectional magnetic resonance images (1.5 T) of the stifle joint of a 23 year old Shetland pony gelding served as basis for image segmentation. Based on the 3D polygon models of femur, tibia, articular cartilages, menisci, collateral ligaments and the meniscotibial ligaments, an FEM model was generated. Tissue material properties were assigned based on data from human (Open knee(s) project) and bovine femoro-tibial joint available in the literature. The FEM model was tested across a range of motion of approximately 30°. Pressure load was overall higher in the lateral meniscus than in the medial. Accordingly, the simulation showed higher translocation and deformation in the lateral compared to the medial meniscus. The results encourage further refinement of this model for studying loading patterns on menisci and articular cartilages as well as the resulting mechanical stress in the subchondral bone (femur and tibia). A functional FEM model can not only help identify segments in the stifle which are predisposed to injury, but also to better understand the progression of certain stifle disorders, simulate treatment/surgery effects and to optimize implant/transplant properties.

An investigation on the stability of heated panels in supersonic airflow is performed. The nonlinear aeroelastic model for a two-dimensional panel is established using Galerkin method and the thermal effect on the panel stiffness is also considered. The quasi-steady piston theory is employed to calculate the aerodynamic load on the panel. The static and dynamic stabilities for flat panels are studied using Lyapunov indirect method and the stability boundary curve is obtained. The static deformation of a post-buckled panel is then calculated and the local stability of the post-buckling equilibrium is analyzed. The limit cycle oscillation of the post-buckled panel is simulated in time domain. The results show that a two-mode model is suitable for panel static stability analysis and static deformation calculation; but more than four modes are required for dynamic stability analysis. The effects of temperature elevation and dimensionless parameters related to panel length/thickness ratio, material density and Mach number on the stability of heated panel are studied. It is found that panel flutter may occur at relatively low aerodynamic pressure when several stable equilibria exist for the aeroelastic system of heated panel.

Abstract The paper deals with the development of the finite element method (FEM) model of piezoelectric beam elements, where the piezoelectric layers are located on the outer surfaces of the beam core, which is made of functionally graded material. The created FEM model of piezoelectric beam structure is reduced using the modal truncation method, which is one of model order reduction (MOR) method. The results obtain from reduced state-space model are compared with results obtain from finite element model. MOR state-space model is also used in the design of the linear quadratic regulator (LQR). Created reduced state-space model with feedback with the LQR controller is analysed and compared with the results from FEM model.

The primary goal of this paper is to provide force feedback to the user using vision-based techniques. The approach presented in this paper can be used to provide force feedback to the surgeon for robot-assisted procedures. As proof of concept, we have developed a linear elastic finite element model (FEM) of a rubber membrane whereby the nodal displacements of the membrane points are measured using vision. These nodal displacements are the input into our finite element model. In the first experiment, we track the deformation of the membrane in real-time through stereovision and compare it with the actual deformation computed through forward kinematics of the robot arm. On the basis of accurate deformation estimation through vision, we test the physical model of a membrane developed through finite element techniques. The FEM model accurately reflects the interaction forces on the user console when the interaction forces of the robot arm with the membrane are compared with those experienced by the surgeon on the console through the force feedback device. In the second experiment, the PHANToM haptic interface device is used to control the Mitsubishi PA-10 robot arm and interact with the membrane in real-time. Image data obtained through vision of the deformation of the membrane is used as the displacement input for the FEM model to compute the local interaction forces which are then displayed on the user console for providing force feedback and hence closing the loop.

AbstractThe conductor on round core (CORC) cable wound with second-generation high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes is a promising cable candidate with superiority in current capacity and mechanical strength. The composing superconductors and the former are tightly assembled, resulting in a strong electro-magnetic interaction between them. Correspondingly, the AC loss is influenced by the cable structure. In this paper, a 3D finite-element model of the CORC cable is first built, and it includes the complex geometry, the angular dependence of critical current and the periodic settings. The modelling is verified by the measurements conducted for the transport loss of a two-layer CORC cable. Subsequently, the simulated results show that the primary transport loss shifts from the former to the superconductors as the current increases. Meanwhile, the loss exhibited in the outer layer is larger than that of the inner layer, which is caused by the shielding effect among layers and the former. This also leads to the current inhomogeneity in CORC cables. In contrast with the two-layer case, the simulated single-layer structure indicates stronger frequency dependence because the eddy current loss in the copper former is always dominant without the cancellation of the opposite-wound layers. The core eddy current of the single structure is denser on the outer surface. Finally, the AC transport losses among a straight HTS tape, a two-layer cable and a single-layer cable are compared. The two-layer structure is confirmed to minimise the loss, meaning an even-numbered arrangement makes better use of the cable space and superconducting materials. Having illustrated the electro-magnetic behaviour inside the CORC cable, this work is an essential reference for the structure design of CORC cables.


The design and development of radome external structure, requires aerodynamic forces acting on it and its distribution. This paper discusses the wind tunnel studies carried out for estimating the incremental effects due to the installation of large ellipsoidal radome along with the support structure pylons on the dorsal side of the fuselage. Effect of locations of radome at 36 m and 31.5 m from the nose of the fuselage is discussed. Further using the scan-valve pressure transducer, the pressure distribution on the radome measured at different aerodynamic angles required for the structural design of radome structure is also brought out. Flow visualization study which are useful for qualitative check for the effect of installation of the radome with support structure on the effectiveness of the empennage is attempted.

In this work, a methodology to extract dynamic multiport compact thermal model from finite element model (FEM) thermal simulations is presented. The proposed methodology is applied to an innovative silicon microthruster. The boundary conditions of the FEM model have been estimated from experimental measurements. The analysis of these transients with the methodology presented delivers a dynamic multiport compact RC model representation of the complete structure. The topology and sizing of the components is provided by a hybrid combination of Sequential Search algorithms together with nonlinear least squares optimization.
