The article presents the analysis of the topical issue of selection of grammar material for teaching Russian as a Foreign Language, since it is important to take into account the principles involving functional approach to learning a new language. When selecting grammar material to present it to foreign students, it is necessary to consider the goal and content which are recognized as the main components in the system of foreign language teaching. The author obtained the following result: teaching grammar is more effective if the presentation of grammar material is quite accessible; the training content is to include the speech patterns, speech situations that are necessary to form the knowledge, skills in syntax. The author established that the communicative-functional approach is recognized as the leading one in teaching Russian as a Foreign Language, since it unites functional and structural-semantic aspects. This may help to develop a linguodidactic model of pedagogical influence, taking into account the principles of selection of grammar (syntactic) material, which includes the information about syntactic structures of semantic similarity.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to analyse any potential similarities between the Croatian and German language and present them adopting a contrastive approach with the intent of simplifying the learning process in regards to the German syntactic structure for Croatian German as foreign language students. While consulting articles and books on the theories and methods of foreign language teaching, attention is usually drawn to differences between the mother tongue and the foreign language, especially concerning false friends etc. The same applies to textbooks, workbooks and how teachers behave in class. Thus, it is common practice to deal with the differences between the foreign language and the mother tongue but less with similarities. This is unfortunate considering that this would likely aid in acquiring certain grammatical and syntactic structures of the foreign language. In the author's opinion, similarities are as, if not more, important than differences. Therefore, in this article the existence of similarities between the Croatian and German language will be examined closer with a main focus on the segment of sentence types. Special attention is drawn to subordinate clauses as they play an important role when speaking and/or translating sentences from Croatian to German and vice versa. In order to present and further clarify this matter, subordinate clauses in both the German and Croatian language are defined, clarified and listed to gain an oversight and to present possible similarities between the two. In addition, the method to identify subordinate clauses in a sentence is explained as well as what they express, which conjunctions are being used for each type of subordinate clause in both languages and where the similarities and/or differences between the two languages lie.

Ethnographic study of Hippo Family Club, a foreign language learning club in Japan with chapters elsewhere, reveals a critique of foreign language teaching in Japanese schools and in the commercial English conversation industry. Club members contrast their own learning methods, which they view as “natural language acquisition”, with the formal study of grammar, which they see as uninteresting and ineffective. Rather than evaluating either the Hippo approach to learning or the teaching methods they criticize, however, this paper considers the ways of thinking about language that club members come to share. Members view the club as a transnational organization that transcends the boundaries of the nation-state. Language learning connects the club members to a cosmopolitan world beyond the club, even before they interact with speakers of the languages they are learning. The analysis of club members’ ideologies of language and language learning illuminates not only the pragmatics of language use, but practices and outcomes of socialization and shared social structures.

Since 2010, the didacticians specialized on foreign language teaching are working on emotions. Our reflexion fits into this framework. This article presents a cognitive didactics research on foreign language. AbstractWriting has traditionally been a neglected area of foreign language teaching, and most probably the least popular skill to acquire among students. However, it has lately emerged as an important element of the communication dyad, which also involves speaking, i.e. the oral manifestation of social interaction and exchange of information. When explaining writing in practical terms, the focus falls on showing that there should be a link between real-life needs and instruction, both from the perspective of the language and from that of the task. Understanding writing systematically not only guarantees successful writing outcomes, but also leads to the acquisition of a secondary set of language-related abilities: an informed selection of grammar and lexical structures; a logical pattern of organization in the development of ideas; an appropriate choice of register and style; an overall better approach to writing tasks and contextualizations. This article aims to discuss writing as a productive skill while proposing six different approaches that successfully marry both the linguistic dimension and the task-related awareness students need to acquire in order to successfully express themselves in written forms.

The article examines the place of the word-formation component of the communicative competence of foreign students in the process of their learning Russian as a foreign language. The word-formation component, along with other linguistic components, participates in the formation of the communicative competence of foreign students, however, the problem of Russian word formation remains insufficiently developed in the linguodidactic plan. The author expresses his opinion that the increase in the vocabulary of foreign students should be accompanied by the systematization of lexical units, taking into account their derivational connections and relations. Therefore, when lexicalization, one should use not the selection of synonyms or the descriptive method, which leads to the mechanical memorization of the meaning, but by means of correlation with the same root words, to activate in the minds of foreign students the living connections of the lexical units of the Russian language. This applies not only to derivatives of words associated with generating relations of full direct motivation, but also to those derivatives where these connections are not explicitly expressed. Such an interpretation through a productive word not only makes the meaning of the new lexeme understandable, facilitates its memorization, but also creates a single picture of lexical and word-formation relationships within the language, forms a systemic understanding of the language among students. The skills of correlating a derivative word with its derivative, obtained in the study of Russian as a foreign language, make it possible to understand the meanings of unfamiliar words. The speed of memorizing the meanings of derived words in this case directly depends on the understanding of the word-formation structure of the word. This technique will greatly facilitate the development of the vocabulary and will contribute to the formation of a holistic view of the language as a system among foreign students.

The authors of this article point to the need to update the content of language education of foreign non-philological students of the Ukrainian higher education institutions. Updating the content component of the Ukrainian language teaching system as a foreign language foregrounds the following factors: the demands of a contemporary information society for the tasks and results of foreign language teaching, modern standards of language education, conditions for the teaching process organization of language disciplines to foreign students of the Ukrainian higher education institutions, and communicative needs of foreign students with a new mindset. An act of communication is considered to be the basic unit of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language, which linguistic incarnations are discourse sentence expressions and discourse texts. An effective updating enabler of a language education content of foreign non-philological students is to identify most suitable general methodological principles for the selection of teaching materials. Techniques of educational technologies in the empirical spectrum of methodology are developed precisely in terms of linguodidactic principles. The present research theoretically substantiates the distinction of the selection principles for the content components of a language education system of foreign non-philological students. It describes the array of experimental tools for the expert assessment of practitioners as well as highlights statistical indicators of the survey results. The article also analyzes the discussion of the principles proposed by the authors for the selection of language materials for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language to non-philological students. This article also exemplifies the results of a holistic assessment by experts of a probable application of the principles suggested in questionnaires on the selection of learning materials for textbooks / manuals that are used in the actual learning process. Statistical indicators of the imparted expert evaluation have verified the relevance to improve existing textbooks / manuals and bring them closer to communicative needs of modern foreign students with mosaic thinking, the requirements of up-to-date educational language standards, and conditions for the teaching process organization of language disciplines to foreign students of the Ukrainian higher education institutions.
