The bigeye thresher shark Alopias supeciliosus is a large epipelagic and mesopelagic species, and it has a wide distribution in the Atlantic. However, its record in the Gulf of Mexico is sporadic. A single adult female of A. superciliosus, measuring 360 cm total length and about weight 165 kg, was caught by artisanal fishers in Salinas Roca Partida, Veracruz, Mexico, on July 14, 2020. This study reports the first occurrence of this species in the southwestern of the Gulf of Mexico, which extends its geographical distribution in Mexico.

The rediscovery of the original, unedited Latin manuscript of Georg Wilhelm Steller's “De bestiis marinis” (“On marine mammals”), first published in 1751, calls for a new translation into English. The main part of the treatise contains detailed descriptions of four marine mammals, but the introduction is devoted to more general issues, including innovative speculation on morphology, ecology and biogeography, anticipating arguments and concepts of modern biology. Steller noted early that climate and food have a direct influence on body size, pelage and functional traits of mammals, potentially affecting reversible changes (phenotypic plasticity). Feeding and other behavioural habits have an impact on the geographical distribution of mammals. Species with a broad diet tend to have a wide distribution, whereas animals with a narrow diet more likely have only a restricted range. According to Steller, both sea and land then still concealed countless animals unknown to science.

The Caatinga rainbow boa (Epicrates assisi Machado, 1945) is a snake belonging to the order Squamata, family Boidae, and subfamily Boinae. It has a wide distribution in Brazil and can be found in the Caatinga biome. The present study aims to report the first occurrence of Amblyomma rotundatum on E. assisi in the municipality of João Pessoa, Paraíba State (PB). On March 3, 2020, a tick collection was performed on the dorsal region of the head of an E. assisi, which was captive at the Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park, João Pessoa-PB. After collecting the tick, it was transferred to a flask containing 70º alcohol and sent to the Laboratory of Animal Parasitology of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-Arid (UFERSA) for analysis. Identification was done with the aid of a stereomicroscope using a taxonomic key. The result identified this specimen as a nymph of A. rotundatum. The occurrence of this tick species on E. assisi is reported for the first time and constitutes new data applicable to the ectoparasites that occur in this host species in Brazil.

Abstract A description is provided for Mycosyrinx cissi. Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Cissus sicyoides and other species of Cissus, including C. acida, C. afzeli, C. diffusiflora, C. erosa, C. quadrangularis, C. rhombifolia and C. trifoliata. DISEASE: Inflorescence smut of cissus. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Widespread in areas around the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, including Bahamas, Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, Trinidad, USA (Florida) Venezuela; also found in Brazil, Ecuador (including Galapagos Is.), French Guiana, Guyana, Peru. Abstract A description is provided for Nannizzia incurvata. Information is included on the disease caused by the organism, its transmission, geographical distribution, and hosts. HOSTS: Recorded only from man and dog (but see NOTES). Guinea-pigs have been experimentally infected. DISEASE: Ringworm (dermatophytosis, tinea). Nannizzia incurvata is present in soil and apparently only rarely a cause of disease. In man the scalp (tinea capitis) and glabrous skin (tinea corporis) may be infected. Skin lesions are inflammatory but details of known scalp infections are not available. In experimental inoculations of guineapigs (Rdzanek, pers. comm.) N. incurvata was intermediate between N. gypsea and N. fulva in virulence, the reaction varying from negative to strongly inflammatory. Ectothrix hyphae breaking up into large arthrospores were seen on some hairs, and infected hairs did not fluoresce under Wood's light. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION: Asia (India), Europe (Czechoslovakia, Great Britain and Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, Poland); U.S.A. (Tenn.); N. incurvata is probably of world-wide distribution in the soil.

This study reports the first occurrence of partial albinism in a tropical anguillid eelAnguilla bengalensis bengalensisfrom Malaysia. This paper also describes the first record of albinism in the genusAnguilla. The occurrence of albinism in our specimen ofAnguillamight have been caused by three factors: (1) contamination effects; (2) random genetic alterations; or (3) genetic alteration due to small population size. The present results suggest that the albinism inA. bengalensis bengalensisis probably caused by random genetic alteration. Partial albinism may not be a handicap in the life of the present specimen because the eel could still potentially grow to more than 1 m in total length, just like a normal adult eel.

Abstract. A systematic study on the evolution and stratigraphic distribution of the species of Catinaster from several DSDP/ODP sites with magnetostratigraphic records is presented. The evolution of Catinaster from Discoaster is established by documentation of a transitional nannofossil species, Discoaster transitus. Two new subspecies, Catinaster coalitus extensus and Catinaster calyculus rectus are defined which appear to be intermediates in the evolution of Catinaster coalitus coalitus to Catinaster calyculus calyculus. The first occurrence of C. coalitus is shown to be in the lower part of C5n.2n at 10.7–10.9 Ma in the low to mid–latitude Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The last occurrence of C. coalitus coalitus varies from the upper part of C5n.2n to the lower portion of C4A. Magnetobiostratigraphic evidence suggests that the FO of C. calyculus rectus is diachronous. Catinaster mexicanus occurs in the late Miocene and has been found only in the eastern equatorial Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.

SUMMARYThe development, survival and infectivity of larvae of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis at 10 and 21 °C have been studied. In cultures developed for 1 weekat21 °C but stored at either 10 or 21 °C the mean recovery of larvae in 1·5 h Baermann sediment (46% and 42% of total eggs, respectively) and their infectivity (66% and 70% day 8 p.i. recovery, respectively) at 4 weeks of cultivation were similar. However, at 20 weeks of cultivation only a few larvae survived storage at 21 °C (1·4%) and the survivors showed very low infectivity (4·1%), whereas larvae stored at 10 °C retained most of their survival and infectivity rates (41% and 44%, respectively). In cultures developed and stored at 10 °C a lower mean proportion (17%) of the eggs was recovered as larvae at 4 weeks of cultivation. The mean infectivity rate of these larvae increased from 4 to 12 weeks of cultivation (18 % and 42 %, respectively) but was reduced at 20 weeks of cultivation (27 %). An increased proportion of adult female worms was recovered from rats infected with larvae from cultures showing poor development or survival and the fecundity of the adult females decreased in all groups as the storage time of the cultures was increased. Eggs from low fecundity adult worms showed normal development of larvae. The relation between survival, temperature in the habitat and the geographical distribution of the larvae of N. brasiliensis is discussed.

Porolepiformes (Sarcopterygii) are poorly represented in the Devonian of Australia and eastern Gondwana as a whole. New cosmine-covered lower jaws from the Mulga Downs Group, western New South Wales (?Pragian–Emsian or Eifelian), represent the first occurrence of Porolepis in Australia, a genus formerly known exclusively from the Northern Hemisphere. This material is assigned to the new species Porolepis foxi. The wide distribution of Porolepis, demonstrated by its occurrence in New South Wales, Europe, and Spitsbergen, contrasts with the generally high endemicity of the faunas in which it is present.

Despite the ubiquity of sea anemones (Cnidaria: Actiniaria) in tropical ecosystems, our understanding of their biodiversity and taxonomy is limited. Here we re-establish the identity of an intertidal zooxanthellate species, Phymanthuspinnulatus Martens in Klunzinger, 1877. Originally described from a single preserved specimen in the Berlin Museum by CB Klunzinger, his brief footnote lacked crucial details to positively identify the species. Our redescription is based on more than 50 living individuals of P.pinnulatus collected from its type locality, Singapore. These were examined and compared with type materials of the species and its congeners. Specimens of P.pinnulatus differ from syntypes of species described as Phymanthuslevis Kwietniewski, 1898 from Indonesia, as well as Phymanthussansibaricus Carlgren, 1900 and Phymanthusstrandesi Carlgren, 1900, both described from East Africa. Phymanthuspinnulatus was encountered on the lower intertidal, among coral rubble and between rocky crevices. It is vibrantly coloured and has 96 marginal tentacles with branching outgrowths along each, resulting in a ‘frilly’ appearance. The anemone has a flat expanded oral disc, with discal tentacles that are inconspicuous and reduced, unlike syntypes of its congeners. Details of its live appearance, musculature, and cnidom are also provided for the first time. Overall, types of cnidae and capsule sizes differ from other known species of Phymanthus documented elsewhere. It is inferred that P.pinnulatus has a wide distribution that extends eastwards from Singapore, as far as Ambon and the Torres Straits. Some individuals reported as Phymanthusmuscosus Haddon and Shackleton, 1893 and Phymanthusbuitendijki Pax, 1924 are probably P.pinnulatus. This morphological analysis provides new insights into the characters used to delimit P.pinnulatus, clarifies its geographical distribution, and contributes to an ongoing revision of the genus Phymanthus.
