The aim of this paper is to consider project based learning as one of the most efficient and productive methods used in teaching English as a foreign language to engineering students of Russian technical universities. Special emphasis is put on communication skills to be mastered by future engineers through project based learning. It is of great importance to note that highly developed oral and written communication skills are valuable for engineering students wishing to become successful and competitive in the international arena. Hence, engineering students must be trained well to develop their communication skills in English in the field of professional activity, mainly in the science research area. An inter-disciplinary project designed on the basis of project based learning for the second year students of Tomsk Polytechnic University is reviewed in this work. The authors come to the conclusion that project based learning is an ideal teaching method since it allows engineering students to improve significantly their oral and written communication skills as well as apply the content knowledge in the field of their professional activity within the English language course.

Presented is the analysis of correct choice of EFL Textbooks in the context of developing students’ effective communicative writing skills. Despite the needs of society for specialists, able to write in foreign language, most school graduates are not ready for written intercultural communication. Today, we should change the strategy of developing written communication skills and consider them as a goal, rather than as a means of teaching and learning. The paradigm shift is supposed to be reflected in training materials that should be appropriately selected in accordance with the goal. To be effective, the choice of training aids ought to be based on appropriate criteria. Our research was aimed to determine criteria for selecting EFL textbooks for effective developing written communication skills of students. The proposed criteria were verified in series of modern English textbooks.

The work discusses the problem of teaching students of civil engineering departments English-language civil engineering discourse, in particular, communicative tactics of this type of discourse. We substantiate the need to form students’ skills in using the communicative tactics applied in civil engineering discourse in professional communication. We give an overview of com-municative tactics of written discourse used by the authors of English-language documentation in civil engineering professional field. The purpose of the study is to determine the level of students’ skills in using communicative tactics in a foreign language professional written speech. Theoretical and practical research showed that in a modern technical university, insufficient attention is paid to teaching students this component of professional discourse. At the same time, the level of students’ skills to use communicative tactics in professional communication is quite low, which led us to the conclusion that it is of paramount importance to include this component in the pro-gram of teaching a foreign language in a professional field. The results of the will serve as the ba-sis for the development of a methodic model of teaching civil engineering students the communic-ative tactics of professional civil engineering discourse.

The globalization of world markets which has led to the hegemony of English language over other languages requires graduates from different fields of specialization to equip themselves with English communication skills to communicate effectively in local and international workplace contexts. This study was conducted to investigate the English speaking skills needed by engineering students in the Kwara states of Nigeria. A survey was carried out to compare how the respondents’ (undergraduate engineering students and industry workers in the Kwara State of Nigeria) self-rated their speaking interaction and production skills and to observe their perception of the importance of speaking interaction and production sub skills for workplace communication. The study concluded with suggestions for creating a better perception of the importance of English speaking skills among engineering students and creating a better workplace English curriculum so that students’ workplace speaking skills can be improved.

This research focused on fostering students’ critical thinking through Project-Based Learning. The design of the research was descriptive qualitative method. The subjects were the lecturer of TEFL 1 course and 25 students in C class of the fourth semester of STAIN Ponorogo who took TEFL 1 course. The instruments used are in the form of observation sheet and interview guideline. The data analysis applied in this research used data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that the implementation Project-Based Learning that fosters the students’ critical thinking in TEFL class are through the following steps: (1) Discussing the materials about English Language Teaching Method, (2) working with the group to construct scenario of teaching practice, (3) practicing the scenario, (4) recording the teaching practice into video, and (5) evaluating the video product. Moreover, the result of interview indicates that the students showed significantly positive attitude toward the implementation of Project-Based Learning. Finally, English teachers are recommended to implement Project-Based Learning in EFL class since it facilitates the students to build their critical thinking.

Keywords: critical thinking, Project-Based Learning

In modern foreign language teaching, a variety of approaches is used to meet the learners’ needs in acquiring language skills for professional communication. One of them is Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), an innovative language teaching method that combines learning a foreign language and profession-related content. In this paper, we describe the experience of designing a course in English for students of Biomedical Engineering with elements of the CLIL approach. A theoretical foundation for implementing CLIL within the competency-based approach is provided. The core principles of CLIL are discussed. The paper focuses on the course design and its structure as well the main requirements to selecting the learning materials. The examples of sample tasks and activities for the course are presented.
