Numerical Prediction of Rock Fracturing During the Process of Excavation

During the process of excavation, blasting can induce cracking inside the surrounding rock. Considering the effects of material properties and loading conditions, a rock blasting excavation model with two successive excavation steps was developed through the use of AUTODYN code. Four kinds of equation of state (EOS), linear, shock, JWL, and compaction were applied to the materials employed in this numerical model. A modified principal stress failure criterion was applied to determining material statuses, and TNT explosive and a relatively homogeneous igneous rock, diorite, were used in this numerical model. By using this numerical model, rock fracturing process during blasting excavation was simulated, and rock fracturing process during two successive excavations is presented.

In order to investigate the effect of confining pressures on rock dynamic fracturing under dynamic loads, a 2D finite difference dynamic numerical model for a circular rock sample with a single centralized borehole is developed. According to the material properties and loading conditions, shock and linear equations of state are combined and applied to the rock material in this model. A modified principal stress failure criterion is applied to determining material status. It is shown that as the increase of mining depth, the extent of blasting-induced damage of rock increases significantly.

A crater blasting model of rock with pre-existing defects under blasting loads is established by using finite difference method. The defects are saturated with water and are randomly distributed. The defects include voids, pores and small open joints. A shock equation of state (EOS), obtained from the existing test results, is employed for the granite near the explosive charge, and for the granite far from the charge, a linear EOS is applied. A modified principal stress failure criterion is applied to determining the granite statuses. The granite dynamic strengths, which increase with strain rate, are calculated from the existing test results. The simulation results show that under blasting, the strength of wet rock is lower than that of dry rock.

Gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) employed in a deep inclined thick coal seam (DITCS) can not only increase economic benefits and coal recovery, but also optimize surrounding rock structure. In accordance with the principles of GERRC, the technology of GERRC in DITCS is introduced and a roof-cutting mechanical model of GERRC is proposed to determine the key parameters of the depth and angle of RC. The results show that the greater the RC angle, the easier the caving of the goaf roof, but the length of cantilever beam increases. The depth of RC should account for the dip angle of the coal seam when the angle is above 20°. Increasing the coal seam dip angle could reduce the volume of rock falling of the goaf roof, but increase the filling height of the upper gangue to slide down. According to numerical model analysis of the stress and displacement of surrounding rock at different depths and angles of RC, when the depth of RC increased from 9 m to 13 m, the distance between the stress concentration zone and the coal side is increased. When the angle of RC increased from 0° to 20°, the value of roof separation is decreased. GERRC was applied in a DITCS with 11 m depth and 20° RC angle, and the field-measured data verified the conclusions of the numerical model.

The effects of tunnel blast excavation on the lining structures of adjacent tunnels are comprehensively studied for the Xinling highway tunnel project. First, the LS-DYNA software is applied to obtain the characteristics of vibration velocities and dynamic stresses at different positions of the tunnel liner. The results indicate that the maximum peak particle velocity (PPV) is located on the haunch of the lining facing the blasting source and that the PPV and peak tensile stress decrease with the increase in the surrounding rock grade. Second, a site test on blasting vibration is conducted to verify the simulation results. By using regression analysis of the measured vibration data, the calculation method of maximum charge per delay for optimizing blasting excavation under different surrounding rock grades is obtained. Finally, based on the statistical relationship between crack alteration and PPV on the lining before and after blasting, the safety thresholds of PPV for different portions of the tunnel are determined. The recommended safety threshold of PPV is 10 cm/s for intact lining and for B-grade and V-grade linings of the surrounding rock tunnel. However, if the lining crack grade falls between 1A and B, then the recommended safety thresholds of PPV for the III-grade and IV-grade surrounding rock tunnel are 5 cm/s and 6 cm/s, respectively. The threshold PPV proposed in this study has been successfully applied to restrict blast-induced damage during new tunnel excavation of the Xinling tunnel project.

Abstract Although adequate removal of cuttings from beneath a drill bit is important for efficient drilling operations, very little basic data are available relative to the fundamentals of chip removal by hydraulic jets. A discussion is presented in this paper of an experimental investigation of the jetting action of hydraulic jets in removing loose particles from the bottom of a cylindrical hole. Conditions for which the jet is no longer capable of removing chips from the bottom of the hole are determined. This situation represents equilibrium between the chip removal force and chip holddown forces such as gravity and pressure. In most of the tests loose particles were jetted with water or a water-glycerine mixture to determine the dependence of chip removal on hole size, jet size, height of jet off bottom of hole, flow rate, particle density and fluid viscosity. A test with a pressurized mud system indicated that relatively low pressures can completely overcome the removal action of a hydraulic jet. Although the system studied herein is not directly applicable to a rotary drill bit, the work with such simplified systems can provide a better understanding of the chip removal action of jets, and with logical extensions it may provide a reasonable basis for the best use of fluid jets in drilling. Introduction The primary deterrent to maximum drilling rates is the inability of the drilling system to remove rock cuttings efficiently enough to prevent interference with the drilling action. The objective of chip removal studies is to permit predicting and controlling removal forces under downhole drilling conditions. Conditions at the bottom of a hole during rotary drilling are exceedingly complex and are not likely to be described in a quantitative way by investigations in terms of the total drilling action until a better understanding is developed of the simplified components of the problem. The present study is concerned with the elementary condition of removal of chips by a single central jet. Even this relatively simple model provides mathematical difficulties because of the turbulent nature of the flow from the jet and because of the shape of the bottom of the hole beneath the jet. Theoretical and experimental studies have been made of turbulent jets impinging normally on an infinite body and deductions based on analytical solutions to simplified problems can give some insight into the problem of cutting removal by a jet. However, because of the present lack of understanding of the behavior of the interaction between the fluid jet and the chips being removed, an experimental approach was chosen for the present study. Methods have been developed for maximizing hydraulic horsepower, impact force and jet velocity; but whether maximizing these parameters maximizes chip removal with present drilling bits has not been demonstrated. Simplifying the problem of chip removal may make it possible to develop some understanding of the manner in which the jet velocity is dissipated. Better understanding of a simple case should materially assist in extending analysis to more complicated cases. Thus, we are not concerned in the present study with the rock fracturing process itself but only with the removal of the debris from the bottom of the hole. A problem which is quite similar to the chip removal problem is the suspension of solids in stirred vessels. This problem has been studied by the chemical industry and correlations have been obtained by dimensional analysis which permit the design of mixing vats. An approach similar to that used in the mixing vat problem is used in the analysis of the jetting data in the present paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The test equipment arrangement shown schematically in Fig. 1 allows the jetting action to remove particles until an equilibrium height is attained for each combination of hole size, jet size and flow rate.*** Equilibrium conditions require that the removal force is unable to remove additional particles. This study aimed to model numerically the thermal cycling resulting from the steel ASTM A743-CA6NM remelting process. The problem was solved with the support of the commercial software ANSYS / FLUENT ® 14.5 for the three-dimensional case using the finite volume method. The following simplifying assumptions were adopted: heat loss by natural convection, absence of radiation, no phase change, concentrated heat source, and thermophysical properties independent of temperature. The results were analyzed for two different current intensities: 90A and 130A, and compared with experimental measurements. The peak temperatures of the thermocouples near the fusion line for the current of 130A were well represented by the numerical model, with a maximum deviation of 9.62%. In the case of the more remote thermocouples from the fusion line, the best results were obtained for the current of 90A, not exceeding 5% of deviation. In general, it was found that the tested body is heated faster than in simulations. This can be considered as a consequence of the simplification in material properties, which were assumed constants with temperature. The results of this study demonstrate that, given the adopted simplifications, the numerical model was able to satisfactorily reproduce the experimentally measured thermal cycles.
