Encore Synergy Implementation at a Medium-Sized University Library

Implementing Web-scale discovery at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s (UNO) Criss Library presented some unexpected challenges. The UNO library selected Encore Synergy from Innovative Interfaces, Vendor homogeneity between Innovative Interfaces’ Integrated Library System (ILS), and the discovery tool did not prevent problems regarding ILS module interoperability. This chapter describes the solutions found. Web-scale discovery via Encore also did not include all of the library’s electronic resources, but only a few aggregator databases. A representative sample of approximately thirty resources, however, was accessible via pass-through search from Encore to Innovative’s federated search tool, Research Pro. An initial examination of database usage indicates a decline in the use of databases not directly searchable in Encore.

This study is aimed to analyze the use of electronic resources and services in science subjects by the Madras University Library System. Post graduate students, Research scholars, faculties were selected for this study. Questionnaire method was adopted to collect the data. Out of 745 questionnaires 724 (97%) were received from respondents. There are about 161 Educational Institution affiliated to University of Madras of which 15 are Government Colleges, 2 University Constituent Colleges, 24 Aided Colleges, 68 Self Finance Colleges and 52 Research Institutes. Out of these 161 Educational Institutions 136 offer Science courses. Apart from this the university itself has 31 departments catering to Science subjects spread over 3 different campuses. Altogether 167 Institutions, affiliated to University of Madras, are offering courses in science subjects. Out of these, 31 University departments have been selected for the study.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the websites of university libraries to ascertain that libraries are effectively utilizing their respective websites to provide easy access to all electronic resources available in the library. The objective was also to a represent a comparative analysis between public and private university library websites regarding the presence of electronic resources with their easy access via the internet. For the purpose of this study, a research instrument in the form of comprehensive checklist of eighteen e-resources was developed to evaluate their accessibility in the websites of public and private university libraries. Twenty university library websites, comprised of ten top-ranked public and ten top-ranked private universities in Bangladesh, were studied for data collection using content analysis method. The findings demonstrate that the presence of e-resources on selected university library websites is still in its early stage, but it has been growing rapidly. The private university library websites are ahead of public university libraries in terms of the integration of web-resources. It is hoped that the findings of this paper will serve to assist the University librarians and other similar institutions in choosing, selecting and acquiring the most appropriate format of information resources, and making these available to their websites, which will both satisfy the needs of their library users and fit within their library budget.

This study examined the perceptions of academic researchers regarding electronic resources (e-resources) provided by the library at the University of Venda (UNIVEN), South Africa. The quantitative research approach and survey research design were adopted to conduct the investigation. Data was collected using a self-administered structured questionnaire randomly distributed to 45 UNIVEN academics. The findings of this study revealed that although academics at UNIVEN find e-resources easy to use, believe the resources improve academic performance, and frequently encouraged postgraduate students to use them, the majority of them had plagiarism concerns and were only moderately satisfied with available e-resources at UNIVEN. This study recommends that the university library should train academics on plagiarism detection. In addition, the library should adopt innovative ways of improving e-resource services, such as providing an Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) with advanced and federated search capabilities.

Objectives - This usability study was developed to observe faculty and graduate students’ reactions to a recent redesign of the University of Kansas (KU) Libraries’ website. The redesign included new navigational features, introduction of a federated search tool, a quick search box on the front page, and research subject pages. The study also provided the opportunity to observe the practices of faculty and graduate students in locating and retrieving information on the Libraries’ website. Methods - Ten participants (five faculty and five graduate students) representing diverse disciplines were solicited for the study. Participants were required to access the Libraries’ website to answer a series of questions regarding new and updated features of the website. Observational analysis using Morae™ software was conducted and interviews with each participant provided details of their opinions on how these new features would influence their research and teaching activities. Results - Most of the participants either did not notice or ignored the major website changes. Links to and locations of commonly used resources (e.g. catalogue; databases; e-journals) had been changed minimally, and the faculty and graduate student participants gravitated to those familiar features to complete tasks. Prior to the study, participants had not accessed the new discovery tools; however, once previewed, responses to the tools’ utility were generally favourable. After using the federated search tool on a familiar topic, several participants noted that, when directed to databases they had not previously considered, they were able to locate citations they had missed in the past. Observers noted pitfalls in navigating the site such as inconsistent underscoring of links, ambiguous terminology, and unclear icons meant to expand subject heading lists. Unexpected searching behaviours were observed, including inconsistent and lack of conceptual understanding in searching for e-journal content. Conclusions - This study provides evidence regarding the usability of a library website with a population already familiar with library resources. It demonstrated that faculty and graduate students are not interested in experimenting with new discovery tools but are amenable to their potential value to undergraduate students. The recent trend toward minimizing content and links on websites satisfies this population, one which is already comfortable with the basic attributes of a library’s website.

Analisa a ambiência da Biblioteca Universitária e as percepções em torno de sua concepção no Sistema Integrado de Bibliotecas da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo - UFES. Para tal, o estudo busca para estudo de caso o sistema de bibliotecas do multicampi da UFES no Estado do Espírito Santo. Utiliza pesquisa do tipo exploratório-descritiva com abordagem de natureza descritiva. Os resultados indicam que a política de indexação é fundamental para a rentabilização do fluxo de informação, por meio da organização e da representação da informação. Conclui que a biblioteca poderá e deverá estabelecer a sua política de indexação com base na necessidade do seu usuário a fim de permitir uma recuperação em menor tempo e com nível de precisão adequado ao usuário.Palavras-Chave: Biblioteca universitária. Recuperação da informação. ABSTRACT: It analyzes the ambience of the University Library and the perceptions around its conception in the Integrated Library System of the Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo - UFES. To this end, the study seeks for a case study of the UFES multicampi library system in the State of Espírito Santo. It uses exploratory-descriptive research with a descriptive approach. The results indicate that the indexing policy is fundamental for the profitability of the information flow, through the organization and representation of the information. It concludes that the library can and should set its indexing policy based on the needs of its user in order to allow faster retrieval and user-specific accuracy.Keywords: University library. The article reveals the role of a university library in forming the united information-educational space. The higher institution library is considered as a backbone element of the information-educational space. A qualitative change in the library activities is emphasized by its ability to interact with other subjects of the educational space both within the university and beyond it.The university library has an integrative function providing the effect of the integrity of the information-educational space in two directions: internal and external ones. The emphasis is placed on the disclosing the integration external direction, that ensure the library access to the global information-educational spaces of the city, region, country, and world. Early forms of realizing the integration external direction are shown. First directions on the resources sharing are marked in organizing libraries interaction.The involved item modern state supposes using both traditional and electronic information resources, and new information technologies allow opening new forms of implementation of the integration external direction. Among them are consortia and corporations of university libraries of cities, regions, as well as other levels and departments. Libraries, becoming resource centers of universities and regions, create research-educational orientated resources; serve the university, municipal and regional circle of users, providing them with direct and remote access to all available resources. The integrative function content of university libraries is connected with creating a uniform information-educational space of the region, namely the unification of library activities of territorial entities (a region, a city) and libraries of other regional systems and departments (education, science, culture, etc.).The next form of implementing the integration external direction is participation of education institutions in development of the existing electronic library systems, i.e. interaction between electronic resources created by the universities of culture and arts, and external electronic resources available to students. Thus, integrative function of the university libraries includes supporting to fill external electronic library systems with the profile content (both educational and scientific character).The third form implementing the integration external direction is an integrated electronic library. It allows organizing the united information-educational space with the whole set of information-educational resources such as bibliographic, abstract, reference, analytical, full-text ones, etc., and the university library ensures its integrity thanks to its integrative function.

Purpose Middle Eastern universities have recently been included in international rankings, driving a shift in priorities from teaching to research. However, research-centric collection assessments are rarely applied in the region. The Library and Learning Commons of Zayed University has recently completed the first phase of collection assessment for this transition. This study aims to provide an overview of how electronic resources adequacy was measured, and correlations between utilization of resources and research output were determined. A systematic approach is presented to assess electronic resources impact and to investigate and demonstrate the Library’s support of research output in local research and the scholarly environment. Design/methodology/approach Journal article publications from 2009 to 2016 with at least one Zayed University affiliated author were collected from Scopus, the abstract and citation database operated by Elsevier BV. Sources used within these articles were analyzed. COUNTER usage statistics of three indicators (searches, sessions and full-text downloads) were collected from the most used electronic resources in the Library to define the correlation between usage and research activities in the university during the assessment period. Findings The change in university direction toward research is apparent in the data since Fall 2014. Since then, faculty publication output grew rapidly and was positively correlated with library resources use. Sessions and searches displayed a strong positive relationship with research output while the correlation with full-text downloads was moderate. This was true for individual colleges as well as for the university as a whole, supporting the assumption that library utilization is highly correlated with the growth of research productivity. Practical implications Results of this assessment were used to justify the budget allocation of Zayed University Library for supporting research and improve the focus of collection development to better meet researchers’ needs. The most important outcomes were to provide evidence-based information to Library management for strategic planning and evaluation of their changing role in the digital age. Originality/value The systematic approach described has enabled Zayed University library to assess the relevance of its resources to its changed focus toward research, both for the university as a whole and among the more research-productive colleges. This initial approach may be useful for other libraries going through a similar transition, particularly within the region.
