Earth Building Materials, Production, and Construction Techniques

Building materials and construction technology are strongly interrelated with the pillars for sustainable development (e.g. environment, society economy, culture and politics). Earth Building, an 11,000-year-old practice of building using sustainable and earth materials, is practiced worldwide. Earth has been used to construct walls, floors, roofs, and even furniture. Today it is estimated that between 33-50%of the world’s population is housed in earth homes. This chapter reviews the two-year process of earth buildings and earth architecture carried out by the Department of Architecture Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at National University of Malaysia (UKM). The current research emphasis is on the types, construction methods, and architectural aspects of earth buildings and earth architecture. The current manuscript compares type of earth buildings and their properties and applications based on building materials and architectural aspects in construction.

The environmental impacts of the construction stage should be considered since a large amount of building materials are used to construct a building at this stage. Studies on the improvement of construction techniques or the application of newly developed construction methods for reducing the environmental impacts are relatively scant compared to other topics of studies. This study aimed to assess and compare the environmental impacts of the ordinary solid slab, the flat plate slab and the voided slab system during the construction phase. A process-based quantitative model was adopted to evaluate the environmental impacts and the comparative results were analysed to demonstrate the significant characteristics of the environmental impacts of the construction of slab in a building. The assessment results show that the environmental impacts from the ordinary solid slab are the highest and the voided slab system is the lowest among three slab systems. As the slab system of the studied building was replaced, it was shown that the environmental impact indicators showed the decreased tendency. Based on the results of environmental impact reduction from the ordinary solid slab, the flat plate slab and the voided slab system, the voided slab system would have the least environmental impact in all indicators.

Balustrade architecture is mainly distributed in south and southwest China and southeast Asia. Dai dwellings in Yunnan, China, are a typical balustrade dwelling. Traditional dwellings of Dai contain the concepts of architecture, physics, ecology, and sustainability in space planning, building materials, and construction methods. At a time when the global climate environment is deteriorating and energy saving, emission reduction, and low-carbon life are advocated, Dai dwellings should be studied from the perspective of sustainable development, from which we can draw lessons and inspiration. This paper investigated plane layout, space structure, and materials of Dai dwellings, and found that traditional Dai dwellings are wooden frame structures with wood and bamboo; the roof has two layers and long overhang eaves, which is good for diverting rain water, shading and shelter, and integrating the building with the natural landscape as well. Analyzing the spatial characteristics and problems of Dai dwellings at present, discussing the sustainable development ideas of Dai dwellings, constructing Dai dwellings with low energy consumption and high quality of life, combining traditional culture with ecological technology, and designing a sustainable new green living model are beneficial to the inheritance of Dai residence culture.

Between various building materials and technology solutions for structural and architectural realization of residential building as well as various effects in use period we do not know which of variants gives the best performance from sustainable development point of view. This paper aims to give a model for optimization of housing construction technology based on some aspects of sustainable development as a set of multi-criteria: energy consumption of building, - renewable resource use, and - air pollution by CO2 emission. The model uses the multi-criteria compromise ranking technique. As a result we take he rank-list of variants and then we can select the best ones or several better variants. This diversity of acceptable solutions gives opportunity to meet future housing demand depending to different possibilities and interests of user, but by environmentally sustainable manner. This paper gives case study of some typical single-family houses in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the current process of urbanization in our country, more than 1,000,000 waste containers are abandoned every year. The recycling or reuse rate of waste container is low, and relevant research is insufficient, resulting in the waste of resources and energy, as well as environmental pollution, which does not comply with the principle of sustainable development. Use of waste or old containers by converting them into housing, temporary sites or mobile facilities and other projects is feasible. The reuse of abandoned building materials not only can save energy and solve practical problems, but also can develop a new model of container construction techniques. It is of great significance.

Building construction sector can play a major role in reducing Greenhouse Gas emission through application of technologies aimed at reduction of use of building materials. Energy consumed during production of building materials and components plays a crucial role in creating environmental pollution. India is witnessing high growth in urban and rural housing, which needs more production of building materials. Permanent or semi-permanent type buildings which consume easily available conventional materials like brick, reinforced cement concrete etc. can be made Economic and Eco-friendly by lowering use of energy-consuming building materials through Cost-effective Construction Technologies. Buildings with Cost-effective Construction Technology can be designed within the parameters of the existing Indian Standards. Awareness generation among the users, proper technical and architectural guidance and easy availability of skilled manpower are of utmost importance for promotion of cost-effective technologies in India and to make them as the most acceptable case of sustainable building technologies both in terms of cost and environment.

High Ti-bearing blast furnace (BF) slag is the smelting waste of vanadium titano-magnetite. It has great production but low utilization. The high Ti-bearing BF slag is used in building materials industry, which recycles waste material, saves resources and energy, benefiting environmental protection and achieving sustainable development of resources. Study on the recycling of high Ti-bearing BF slag will be an important subject of our researches in future.
