This case study describes the creation of a digital multimodal poem by Mara, a preservice English Education teacher at a large state namesake university located in the Southeastern United States. Drawing on sociocultural perspectives broadly and New Literacies Studies specifically (Gee, 2012; Lankshear & Knobel, 2003; The New London Group, 1996), this study uses multimodal discourse analysis (Jewitt, 2006; Lemke, 1998; O’Halloran, 2009) as a tool to analyze how one preservice teacher’s multimodal composition affected her concept of new literacies. To investigate what Mara learned through the multimodal composing process, the authors analyze three sources of data: a) Mara’s multimodal composition, b) Mara’s written reflection about her composing practices written immediately after she had created her multimodal composition, and c) a ninety-minute interview with Mara using photo-elicitation techniques. Findings indicate that multimodal composing practices can potentially take advantage of the relation between cognition and affect, and do so using cultural means of codification that are both inscribed by textual authors and encoded by acculturated readers. Such experiences and affordances of electronic devices, a trend that is likely to grow as technology continues to advance and become pervasive in the lives of succeeding generations.

ABSTRACTThis article attempts to investigate and explore the interpersonal meaning of YOU C1000 on Indonesian television advertisements. This study was conducted qualitatively using case study to check how different semiotic and modes such as music, sound, speech, color, action, and image work together to build the interpersonal meaning. This study discusses the interpersonal meaning in speech and music, interpersonal meaning in movement and interpersonal meaning in image and color. The study aimed to give some contributions to social semiotics studies, television, or video advertisement. YOU C1000 advertisement is successful to attract audiences’ attention. The election of Miss Universe advertisement star, Bali as the shooting location, English as the language function and wedding ceremony as the activity are the significant factors to introduce the product to the market. In addition, its tagline is a successor factor as well. If people hear Healthy Inside and Fresh Outside, they will remember YOU C1000.                                       ABSTRAKArtikel ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi and menyelidiki makna interpersonal dari produk ‘YOU C1000’ pada iklan televisi Indonesia. Penelitian ini dilakukan secara kualitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus untuk mengetahui bagaimana semiotik dan moda yang berbeda seperti musik, suara, ucapan, warna, tindakan, dan gambar, dapat berjalan bersama-sama dalam membentuk makna interpersonal. Penelitian ini mengulas makna interpersonal dalam ucapan dan musik, makna interpersonal dalam gerakan, dan makna interpersonal dalam gambar dan warna. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan kontribusi pada studi semiotika sosial, televisi, atau iklan video. Iklan YOU C1000 berhasil menarik perhatian penonton. Pemilihan bintang iklan Miss Universe, Bali sebagai lokasi syuting, bahasa Inggris sebagai fungsi bahasa dan upacara pernikahan sebagai aktivitasnya adalah faktor-faktor yang signifikan untuk memperkenalkan produk tersebut ke pasar. AbstractThe discourses of risk serve to organise the ways in which we understand and respond to potential harms and threats, which have become a major concern in our daily life. However, the discourses of risk have not been extensively investigated using linguistic text-based methods on the multimodal level, nor deeply examined beyond Western contexts. Grounded in the literature of risk and multimodal discourse, the aim of the study is to demonstrate Multimodal Discourse Analysis from a Systemic Functional Linguistics perspective as a potential methodology to investigate how risk discourses are constructed in and through semiotic resources in a non-Western setting. Through a case study of child helmet awareness advertisements in Vietnam, the multimodal analysis reveals a comprehensive picture of risk discourses constructed across various semiotic modes. In this analysis, the discourses of risk are constructed through a negotiation of expert knowledge and traditional values to encourage the audience to take actions and provide helmets for their children. Findings of the study demonstrate the use of Systemic Functional multimodal approach to media and communication to provide evidence for risk discourses in the Vietnamese setting, which are at odds with the current literature and can potentially be extended to other contexts.

Abstract Background Violence against women places them in a vulnerable position with regard to homelessness. Although sometimes invisible, women’s homelessness is a complex reality shrouded in dramatic biographies that should be sensitively addressed to avoid revictimization. Methods With the aim of understanding the chaotic discourse of homeless women’s experiences of violence, a qualitative single-case study was conducted using the photo-elicitation technique. Data were analyzed in accordance with grounded theory. Results The participant’s discourse could be summarized in the following categories: “Living in a spiral of violence”, “Confronting vulnerability and violence”, “Being a strong woman”, “New family networks”, “Re-building mother–child relationships”, and “Nurturing spiritual wellbeing”. Conclusions Supporting homelessness women requires an approach that focuses on the prevention of re-victimization and the consequences of violence in terms of physical and mental health. Shelters are spaces of care for recovery and represent referential elements for the re-construction of self.

Musical numbers, as viral modes of entertainment, influential forms of visual culture and catalysts of popular discourse are dense with multivariate aesthetic performers, and are interlaced to punctuate the melodramatic narrative texture in advancement of the plot and characterization in musical films. Performing identity through dancing bodies has been the subject of several film, music, culture, performance and communication research endeavours yet has rarely been explored from multimodal discourse analysis perspectives. To examine the ‘resilient identities’ underlying performances, the article adopts an eclectic approach informed by the Bakhtinian chronotope with regard to two numbers drawn from a recent American musical film in order to pinpoint: (a) the full repertoire of multimodal resources of narrative agency and identity performance; (b) the emotional experiences evoked by the musical numbers; and (c) the social practices that constitute, maintain and resist social realities and identities. The unconventional approach to the analysis of the musical numbers is what makes the current research project stand out among interdisciplinary studies of musical discourse.

The main goal of college English education is to cultivate the students’ language ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and to promote the formation of individualized learning and autonomous ability of college students. At present, the new curriculum reform in our country has put forward a new educational requirement to college English teaching, which requires the innovation of college English teaching idea, and under the background of the development of new media, it proposes to use new media equipment to carry out teaching activities. However, college English education in our country is influenced by examination-oriented education mode, and the traditional education method is still used, which is not good for college students to improve their comprehensive quality of English. In view of this development situation, the Ministry of Education of China Based on the development of new media, a multimodal discourse analysis approach to college English education is proposed to enhance the level of College English teaching.

<span lang="EN-US">This study sought to explore students’ experience in using Instagram to participate in mobile collaborative language learning (MCLL)</span><span lang="EN-US">. The participants of this study were </span><span lang="EN-US">110 students in an </span><span lang="EN-US">English education department</span><span lang="EN-US">, in three different classes,</span><span lang="EN-US">who all had taken a </span><span lang="EN-US">translation course</span><span lang="EN-US">their third semester. Online tasks were assigned to students and they were required to produce, share, interact and collaborate to accomplish tasks. This study applied </span><span lang="EN-US">a </span><span lang="EN-US">qualitative method </span><span>with case study research design </span><span lang="EN-US">using observation, focus group discussion and content analysis. Data were analyzed through stages namely categorization, reduction and interpretation. </span><span>Results showed </span><span lang="EN-US">that </span><span>the </span><span lang="EN-US">students were able to participate in MCLL using Instagram. They produced and shared contents that met the requirement of MCLL. The contents include</span><span lang="EN-US">d</span><span lang="EN-US"> English sentences for structural collaboration in terms of subject-verb agreement and English sentences for word meaning collaborations. They interacted with their peer</span><span lang="EN-US">s</span><span lang="EN-US"> by writing feedback and comment</span><span lang="EN-US">s on the uploaded content</span><span lang="EN-US">. They collaborated with their peer</span><span lang="EN-US">s</span><span lang="EN-US"> by providing multiple interactions to accomplish tasks in MCLL like writing structural analysis, word meaning, paraphrasing sentences, and sentence translation.</span>

As English education programs mature, it is common for them to need to adjust their curricula. Adapting in a timely manner can be an especially acute problem at universities, which are under pressure to respond to changes in education policies while also following regulations to maintain accreditation as degree-granting institutions. To observe how these issues affect redesigning curricula, this article undertakes a case study of one faculty currently in the midst of change. The faculty went through two major periods of changes, but as will be observed, the timing and success of these changes has been swayed by major practical and procedural issues, including restrictions on curriculum changes for accreditation purposes, changes in the labor laws, budgetary restrictions limiting hiring, and changes in university admissions examinations. The discussion considers how these issues were approached while offering observations about how best practices in curriculum design can be implemented effectively given institutional restrictions. 英語教育プログラムの成長に伴い、カリキュラム改正が必要になることが多い。日々変わる教育政策に対応しながら認可にかかわる規則を厳守することが求められる大学にはカリキュラム改正がことに困難である。いかなる問題が発生するのかを究明するため、本稿では英語教育のカリキュラム改正に取り組んでいる学部の事例研究を試みる。当該学部が2期に渡ってカリキュラム改正に取り組んできたが、改正の時期と効果が大学認可に関するカリキュラム改正の規制・雇用法律の変化・人事上の予算的制限・大学入試の変化を含む内的・外的な要因に左右された。最終的にどのように対処したのかを考察しつつ、カリキュラム改正の計画と実施をするための工夫法も提示する。

<p>Globalization has triggered the need to teach ICC in Business English education for effective communication and interaction across cultural diversity.<strong> </strong>This case study was carried out at a college specializing in International Trade in Vietnam with six Business English teachers as participants. The study aims to explore factors influencing the teachers’ integrating ICC into their Business English teaching (BET). The data were collected through 1/ in- depth interviews; 2/ analyses of two syllabi and two Business English textbooks in current use; 3/classroom observations. Inductive analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the teachers hesitated to teach ICC due to multiple influential factors. The results of the study were a good source of data for more efficient policies to develop ICC teaching and learning in the global integration.</p>
