The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in spatial planning is contemporary of the development of computers, and has benefited from the possibilities that ICT brought in terms of data processing and visualisation, with the development of geographical information systems (GIS) being the most successful and widespread example of this relationship. Today, there is a myriad of new ICT being developed based on the existence of a large and affordable computational capacity and on the seemingly infinite data made available. And yet, there is still (and there is scientific evidence of) a large gap between the research and development of ICT and their effective use in the professional practice in planning. In this chapter, the authors discuss the main roots of this gap and present some of the main challenges that researchers and practitioners will face to take advantage of the resources available to effectively reduce that gap.

AbstractInformation and communication technologies, especially in the forms of mobile telecommunications, satellite imaging, and geographical information systems, promise to significantly improve the practice of humanitarian relief. A working group convened at the Humanitarian Action Summit 2009, has begun investigating the challenges to implementing these technologies in field operations, keeping in mind the ethical considerations of linking people to place, and pledging to build a community of practice among academics, practitioners, and developers.

Research on Environmental Analysis and Ecology provides academia with important papers significant technologies or case studies in the environment. A new interesting perspective that would be of interest to a wide readership is the use of Information and Communications Technologies in Environmental Analysis and Ecology. This may involve research and developments in the application of Information and Communication Technologies to the environment. Interesting topics on this subject involve: Environmental Software, Multi-Criteria Decision Making Analysis of environmental or ecological problems, Environmental Databases, Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing, etc. For this purpose, different review papers have been published. An interesting survey on environmental informatics in Europe until 2006 was presented by Pillman et al. [1]. Another interesting review is presented by Athanasiadis [2] who summarized the developments in environmental informatics that exploited agent technology. The synergies between environmental informatics and Knowledge Management are explored by Tochtermann & Maurer

The use of mobile technologies to enhance 21st century learning is increasing in K-12 schools and teacher education institutions. Thus, there is a need to effectively prepare preservice teachers to use mobile technologies in their future classrooms. This chapter explores the effective use of mobile technologies in teacher preparation in ways that are transferred to K-12 teaching and learning. It goes on to look at two major organizations: the university and partner school involved in the preparation of preservice teachers. Additionally, the purposes of incorporating information and communication technologies in teacher preparation as identified by Davis are explored to understand how mobile technologies align with these purposes. Common challenges of using mobile technologies in teacher preparation are also presented.

Research in information and communication technologies (ICTs) has proven to be a major driver for innovation and growth in many countries around the world and is therefore the focus of policies to strengthen research, collaboration and application of research results. This chapter represents a detailed policy analysis of ICT research policies from the European region. The analysis follows a four step pattern: (1) Introduction: the situation of ICT R&D (Information and communication Technology Research and Development) and in Europe, (2) The main actors and programmes funding ICT R&D, (3) The main actors and projects active in ICT R&D and (4) The main ICT R&D themes.

This chapter examines the implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as innovative tools and the use of Social Media (SM) by Polish medium and small sized companies. The chapter aims to present the scope and importance of the use of Information Technology (IT) and SM in the process of companies' functioning and management. Presentation of the results of empirical research is another important aim. Companies' assessment of IT tools and SM's effective use as a prerequisite to improve the company performance is also examined. This is an exploratory study based on a sample of 166 southern Polish firms and it adds to the scant literature on firms' internal IT capabilities to support SM. The paper makes a theoretical and practical contribution in that it brings forth the emerging theme of IT resources that small and medium-sized enterprises adapt to their processes. It further examines the SM use from these firms based on the IT technology they implement as a whole. Managerial implications for marketers are provided since findings illustrate the tendency from small and medium-sized Polish companies not to implement ICTs and SM to a full extent and they could further incorporate SM in the firms' advertising and communication campaigns. Limitations and further research are discussed.

This paper advocates for the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and indigenous languages for the actualization of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria because both tools are capable of transforming the rural and urban populace. It explores the MDGs so as to unravel the ways ICTs and indigenous languages can facilitate the speedy actualization of MDGs in Nigeria, a country with peculiar cultural heritage and with over 750 indigenous languages. It also analyzes some of the contending constraints confronting Nigeria from actualizing MDGs such as corruption, extreme poverty, lack of attention to indigenous languages, high cost of ICTs which are products of bad leadership. The effective use of Nigeria’s different indigenous languages and ICTs, it maintains, remains the most effective way towards educating Nigerians and achieving the MDGs in Nigeria come 2015.

This paper aims to discuss some of the specifics regardingthe use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in school life, especially in pedagogical practices and exercise management, emphasizethe need for training of school managers for the effective use of these resources, contextualised, meaningful and critically. The methodological procedure that guided the development of this study was based on the realization of a systematic literature review in Scielo databases. The choice for this type of research was due to enable the researcher to have contact with the knowledge already produced in the "Technologies and School Management" as well as the possibility of understanding and identifying the main ideas that guide the theme in question here . It conducted a survey of scientific publications, producedin Brazil in the last 10 years between 2004 to 2014, discussing the use of information and communication technologies in school, especially articulated to the school management. The descriptors used were: "Technologies in School" and "School Management". The main results obtained from this study, which does not exhaust the wealth the theme, highlights the importance of developing training processes that promote service to school managers and their teams moments of reflections in pairs and the perceived need of building a collaborative and digital culture in schools.
