Branded Mobile Apps: Possibilities for Advertising in an Emergent Mobile Channel

Marketing professionals are increasingly interested in creating branded mobile phone applications. These “apps” prominently display a brand's identity throughout the user experience, typically in the form of a brand logo, and are designed to perform a range of functions. This article reviews current available research, and specifically addresses two important areas: (1) the effectiveness of mobile phone apps as a form of persuasive advertising and (2) factors that moderate these effects, specifically creative execution style and product category relevance. This article concludes with a discussion of directions for future research.

Objective Medication non-adherence is linked to adverse clinical outcomes (i.e. rehospitalization, mortality) among patients with coronary heart disease. Given its global adoption and growing popularity among older adults, mobile technology may be an effective strategy to improve medication adherence. The aim of this article is to present the perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs of individuals with coronary heart disease about using text messaging and mobile phone applications for medication adherence. Methods We recruited 28 participants (veterans and non-veterans) with a history of coronary heart disease and antiplatelet medication use in Northern California. We formed six focus groups of individuals who participated in three sessions (total 18 sessions). We analyzed our data using grounded theory. Results The median age was 69.5 ± 10.8 years for non-veterans (50% male) and 70 ± 8.6 years for veterans (100% male). In the first session, we found that participants perceived text message reminders as a convenient, easy, and flexible tool to establish a routine for taking medications. In the second session, participants were eager to use applications for their greater interactivity, individualized health monitoring, and personalized medication information. The third session, participants shared preferred features (i.e. drug interactions, tracking symptoms) after using two applications at home for 2 weeks. Conclusions Older adults are engaged and can be proficient mobile technology users. Text messaging and mobile phone applications are perceived as helpful tools for medication adherence. Future research should include rigorous clinical trials to test the efficacy of mobile health technology to promote medication adherence in populations that require strict medication adherence.

Mobile phone applications are rapidly becoming an important channel of interaction between brands and consumers. Recent findings, however, suggest that only few brands succeed in attracting consumers to their mobile applications. Based on findings in the literature, we suggest that consumers with high use-variety, i.e., those who use their mobile phones for multiple functions, are likely to be more interested in mobile applications than others. There are, however, few insights regarding high use-variety consumers. This is the issue that we address in this research by developing and testing a theory, based on habits, that heavy users of the core functions of calling and texting will exhibit high use-variety. We empirically test the theory on two nationally representative samples of mobile phone users. Our results on both samples support the theory. We also discuss the managerial and future research implications of our findings.

BACKGROUND Information and communications technologies are transforming our social interactions and life-styles. One of the most promising applications of information technology is healthcare and wellness management that characterized by early detection of conditions, prevention, and long-term healthcare management. OBJECTIVE The main purpose of this document is to do a study, first about the actual literature about mobile phone applications to measure and control heart-rate and second a study about these applications themselves, analyzing the different app stores more popular nowadays, Google Play Store and iTunes (for Android and iOS devices respectively). METHODS The Web portals and databases that were used to perform the searches are IEEE Explorer, National Center for Biotechnology Information, Springer, ResearchGate, Science Direct and Scopus, taking into account the date of publication from 2010 to 2018, publications in English and Spanish. RESULTS 40 relevant papers have been found related to mobile phone apps to measure and control the heart rate. The results show that of a total of 400 applications found 245 of them are in the Play Store (Android systems) and the remaining 155 were found in the iTunes Store (iOS systems). CONCLUSIONS From the review of the research articles analyzed, it can be said that the most applications found are for Android devices. They occupy 76.53% of the world mobile phone market, while iOS only owns 18.97%.

The main purpose of this study was to determine the use and role of mobile phone for information services in agricultural activities as well as to explore the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics of women farmers and their use of mobile phone in agricultural activities. Data were collected using pre-tested interview schedule from a sample of 85 women farmers during the month of August 2018. Besides descriptive statistics, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to explore the significant influencing factors. Ten (10) different android mobile phone apps were identified which are most frequently used by the women farmers in the study area. Among the mobile apps, ‘vutta or maize app’ was found as the top used mobile app for information services in agricultural activities. This might be because of rapidly spreading of maize cultivation as a highly benefited cereal crops against the climatic change situation in the study area. Findings indicated that among the women farmers, majority (64.7 percent) of the women farmers used mobile phone moderately for information services in agricultural activities followed by 23.5 percent high and only 11.8 percent low used of mobile phone. Among ten socio-economic characteristics of the women farmers, education, annual income, organizational participation, training received and ICT self-efficacy had positive significant relationship and influence of the use of mobile phone in agricultural activities. ‘Insect and disease control measures’ was found the 1st ranked agricultural activities in which mobile phone played highest role for information services. It suggests that issues related to economic impact or effect of mobile phone on sustainable livelihood could be considered for future research to be undertaken.

Security issues have become a major issue on the Internet. One of the security methods that are widely used today is to implement a digital certificate. Digital certificates have evolved over time, one of which is the X.509 digital certificate. Digital certificates have been widely used as authentication applications, web network authentication and other authentication systems that require digital certificates. This research is carried out by implementing an X.509 digital certificate technology as a mobile web service with its client. Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA), Diffie-Hellman, and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) are used to secure the data exchange transaction between the web service and mobile phone. SHA algorithm will be used for user authentication, Diffie-Hellman algorithm will be used for public key exchange and AES algorithms will be used for symmetric cryptography data. The results of the application of digital certificates, the SHA algorithm, Diffie-Hellman, and AES in mobile phone applications, provide security application running on web service. Abstract Despite the high prevalence of self-harm among young people, as well as their extensive use of mobile apps for seeking support with their mental healthcare, it is unclear whether the design of mobile apps aimed at targeting self-harm is underpinned by behavior change techniques (BCTs). To systematically analyze and identify (a) what BCTs and (b) what theories are present in self-harm apps for young people in an attempt to understand their active components. Systematic searches in Apple store, followed by thorough screening, were conducted to identify free mobile apps targeting self-harm in young people. Five apps met the inclusion criteria and were used by trained researchers, who coded identified features against the BCT Taxonomy V1. Despite the majority of apps being underpinned by principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), no other information is available about specific theories underpinning these apps. Nineteen of the 93 BCTs were identified across the five apps. The most frequently used BCT was “Distraction” (54.2%), offering ideas for activities to distract users from self-harming. Other techniques that were used often were “Social Support (unspecified)” (27.0%) and “Behavior Substitution” (10.6%). This study provides the first analysis of BCTs present in mental health apps which are designed to target the reduction of self-harm in young people. Future research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of the apps, as well as assess the effectiveness of the BCTs present.
