Context-Aware Content Delivery

The huge changes in multimedia and video consumption styles are leading to different challenges for the current Internet architecture in order to support the required quality of experience. A comprehensive solution to these would help the service providers and over-the-top players (OTT) to differentiate their services and the network operators to handle ever growing demands on network resources in an era of slower growth in revenues. This chapter discusses the requirements for and approaches to enhanced content delivery architectures, video delivery standards and current and future content transport mechanisms. The chapter also discusses the Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics and management for video content and introduces context-awareness in the video delivery chain. It also provides several examples for context-aware content delivery and personalized services.

Continuous monitoring of achieved level of service quality in packet-switched networks represents an activity of major importance for network and service providers. This is paramount for network resources provisioning which have to satisfy expectations of fickle customers. However, providing enough resources to specific user does not automatically increase their Quality of Experience (QoE), hence understanding of the relationship between these two is crucial in the network management process. Essentially, this requires subjective testing of service quality which is usually done in controlled environments such as laboratories. Nevertheless, the most accurate subjective evaluation of QoE includes real-life experiments in the environments where the services are actually used. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide a review of the current state-of-the-practice in evaluating QoE in real-life environments.

Video quality evaluation needs a combined approach that includes subjective and objective metrics, testing, and monitoring of the network. This paper deals with the novel approach of mapping quality of service (QoS) to quality of experience (QoE) using QoE metrics to determine user satisfaction limits, and applying QoS tools to provide the minimum QoE expected by users. Our aim was to connect objective estimations of video quality with the subjective estimations. A comprehensive tool for the estimation of the subjective evaluation is proposed. This new idea is based on the evaluation and marking of video sequences using the sentinel flag derived from spatial information (SI) and temporal information (TI) in individual video frames. The authors of this paper created a video database for quality evaluation, and derived SI and TI from each video sequence for classifying the scenes. Video scenes from the database were evaluated by objective and subjective assessment. Based on the results, a new model for prediction of subjective quality is defined and presented in this paper. This quality is predicted using an artificial neural network based on the objective evaluation and the type of video sequences defined by qualitative parameters such as resolution, compression standard, and bitstream. Furthermore, the authors created an optimum mapping function to define the threshold for the variable bitrate setting based on the flag in the video, determining the type of scene in the proposed model. This function allows one to allocate a bitrate dynamically for a particular segment of the scene and maintains the desired quality. Our proposed model can help video service providers with the increasing the comfort of the end users. The variable bitstream ensures consistent video quality and customer satisfaction, while network resources are used effectively. The proposed model can also predict the appropriate bitrate based on the required quality of video sequences, defined using either objective or subjective assessment.

This chapter considers the various parameters that affect the user’s Quality-of-Experience (QoE) in mobile peer-to-peer streaming systems, which are a form of content delivery network. Network and content providers do not necessarily focus on users’ QoE when designing the content delivery strategies and business models. The outcome of this is quite often the over-provisioning of network resources and also a lack of knowledge in respect to the user’s satisfaction. The focus is the methodology for quantifying the user’s perception of service quality for mobile video services and user contexts. The statistical technique of discriminant analysis is employed in defining prediction models to map Quality-of-Service (QoS) parameters onto estimates of the user’s QoE ratings. The chapter considers the relative contribution of the QoS parameters to predicting user responses. The chapter also demonstrates the value of the prediction models in developing QoE management strategies in order to optimize network resource utilization. To investigate the versatility of the framework, a feasibility study was applied to a P2P TV system. P2P systems continue to develop and as such, not a lot is known about their QoE characteristics, which situation this chapter seeks to remedy.

Video streaming is expected to acquire a massive share of the global internet traffic in the near future. Meanwhile, it is expected that most of the global traffic will be carried over wireless networks. This trend translates into considerable challenges for Service Providers (SP) in terms of maintaining consumers' Quality of Experience (QoE), energy consumption, utilisation of wireless resources, and profitability. However, the majority of Radio Resource Allocation (RRA) algorithms only consider enhancing Quality of Service (QoS) and network parameters. Since this approach may end up with unsatisfied customers in the future, it is essential to develop innovative RRA algorithms that adopt a user-centric approach based on users' QoE. This chapter focus on wireless video over Critical communication systems that are inspired by QoE perceived by end users. This chapter presents a background to introduce the reader to this area, followed by a review of the related up-to-date literature.

In this article, Quality of Experience (QoE) is discussed as experienced by Tanzanian internet users for the second biannual of 2016. It presents findings of the research that aimed at among other things, finding out the QoE in internet services offered by telecommunication companies and other internet service providers in the country. A qualitative approach was used to establish practical quality of experience issues considered important by Tanzanians. Online questionnaires distributed over social media mainly WhatsApp and Facebook were used to ask users about their experiences of the services they had been receiving, in which over 2000 responses were collected from all districts of Tanzania. It was established that usability, quality of service, price and after sale support were the main issues found to influence quality of experience for many. The findings in this article are useful for academicians, QoS and QoE researchers, policy makers and ICT professionals.

As the demand for over-the-top and online streaming services exponentially increases, many techniques for Quality of Experience (QoE) provisioning have been studied. Users can take actions (e.g., skipping) while streaming a video. Therefore, we should consider the viewing pattern of users rather than the network condition or video quality. In this context, we propose a proactive content-loading algorithm for improving per-user personalized preferences using multinomial softmax classification. Based on experimental results, the proposed algorithm has a personalized per-user content waiting time that is significantly lower than that of competing algorithms.

Quality of experience (QoE) is an important measure of users’ satisfaction regarding their network-based services, and it is widely employed today to provide a real assessment of the service quality as perceived by the end users. QoE measures can be used to improve application performance, as well as to optimize network resources and reallocate them as needed when the service quality degrades. While quantitative QoE assessments based on network parameters may provide insights into users’ experience, subjective assessments through direct feedback from the users have also gathered interest recently due to their accuracy and interactive nature. In this paper, we propose a framework that can be used to collect real-time QoE feedback through crowdsourcing and forward it to network controllers to enhance streaming routes. We analyze how QoE can be affected by different network conditions, and how different streaming protocols compare against each other when the network parameters change dynamically. We also compare the real-time user feedback to predefined network changes to measure if participants will be able to identify all degradation events, as well as to examine which combination of degradation events are noticeable to the participants. Our aim is to demonstrate that real-time QoE feedback can enhance cloud-based services and can adjust service quality on the basis of real-time, active participants’ interactions.

PurposeThe concept of camping has changed over time, with new niche markets appealing to sustainable tourists. Glamping – short for “glamorous camping” – offers a way to experience the positive aspects of camping while minimising the negatives. This paper aims to present the empirical findings of an exploratory study that examined tourists’ Web-reviews to identify the expressive dimensions that describe these travellers’ experience.Design/methodology/approachA content analysis of Web reviews provided by tourists on glamping booking websites produced a battery of concepts used to assess glamping experiences from the guests’ perspective. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used.FindingsThe analysis identified 11 themes: experience, hotel, learn, host, camping, nature, food, ingredients, different, eco and yoga. The results reveal that, when quality of experience is evaluated through user-generated content, two attributes appear to be involved – functional elements offered by service providers and consumers’ emotional elements.Originality/valueWeb-reviews clearly offer important information to managers in the glamping sector. The present study’s analysis revealed that different market segments (i.e. couples, visitors with families or friends and those travelling alone) share certain aspects of glamping experiences.
