This exploration of an academic library's outreach efforts presents a broad overview of a range of initiatives aimed at fostering interaction with library staff and resources. These efforts are put forth by a variety of contributors from throughout the library's staff without a management mandate or day-to-day control. Although these grassroots outreach efforts cost little to nothing, they still act to effectively inculcate a campus-wide perception of the library as a forward-thinking, inclusive and supportive institution while generating a welcoming atmosphere for diverse users. This atmosphere in turn fosters a learning and research community that sees the library as an important contributor to its success. This chapter describes the foundations for this type of outreach as well as giving examples of a number of innovative methods Albertsons Library at Boise State University uses to provide meaningful opportunities for its users to interact with staff, services and resources in a way that cultivates a feeling of inclusion in the community.

Artifacts of the software development process, such as source code or emails between developers, are a frequent object of study in empirical software engineering literature. One of the hallmarks of free, libre, and open source software (FLOSS) projects is that the artifacts of the development process are publicly-accessible and therefore easily collected and studied. Thus, there is a long history in the FLOSS research community of using these artifacts to gain understanding about the phenomenon of open source software, which could then be compared to studies of software engineering more generally. This paper looks specifically at how the FLOSS research community has used email artifacts from free and open source projects. It provides a classification of the relevant literature using a publicly-available online repository of papers about FLOSS development using email. The outcome of this paper is to provide a broad overview for the software engineering and FLOSS research communities of how other researchers have used FLOSS email message artifacts in their work.

The paper will introduce the research community to the Mississippi Micro-CHP (Cooling, Heating, and Power) and Bio-fuel Center, a unique research, demonstration and education center combining the resources and expertise from Mississippi State University Engineering, Agriculture, and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES). The center is a vertically integrated program to study and demonstrate the entire bio-fuel utilization cycle from “woodchips to micro-CHPs”: feedstock production, conversion to bio-fuel/biogas, conversion to onsite electrical power, and utilization of the resulting waste heat to provide the site’s cooling and heating needs. The “micro” designates a focus on residential, small commercial and rural applications. The coupling of micro-CHP with bio-fuels has to do with addressing regional and demographic consideration of successful micro-CHP implementation as opposed to a one-strategy-fits-all approach. The paper will contrast characteristics of residential and small commercial establishments versus commercial/industrial CHP systems and form a list of desirable characteristics for micro-CHP components and overall micro-CHP system design. Based on these evaluations, future research plans for the Center will be suggested. Another factor that will be stressed is that Micro-CHP will best be utilized if designed as part of a whole building system. The characteristics of the building are as important as the characteristics of the equipment, and both should be designed to work together synergistically.

For decades, nanomaterials, especially nanoparticles, have received extensive attention from the research community and have gained increasing importance in many industries. Growing production and utilization of nanomaterials result in a significant need for a relevant and skilled workforce. To meet these growing needs, the course “Fundamentals of Nanotechnology” was developed in the School of Engineering (SOE) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) as one part of the Nanotechnology curriculum development plan sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Nanomaterials is one of the main topics covered in this course. Many concepts related to nanomaterials are both theoretical and abstract, which are difficult for students to grasp. This paper describes the hands-on lab activities incorporated to enhance the students’ learning and mastery of the subject. Through these hands-on activities, students learned to synthesize zero-dimensional and two-dimensional nanomaterials and characterized different properties of these nanomaterials. Students explored the physical and optical properties of nanoparticles, particle-to-particle aggregation, and applications of nanoparticles as sensors used in different fields. This paper presents the role of these hands-on activities in enhancing the students’ understanding of the theoretical nanomaterial concepts. These lab activities were assessed and results of this assessment from the first offering of the course are presented.

Conservation documentation provides important information about a library’s collections, including condition assessments and treatment decisions. Paper files or local databases, however, can make this information unavailable to most library staff and create problems for searching and preservation. To avoid these problems, in 2016, Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) started using the MARC 583 field to record conservation documentation for items in the Special Collections Library. By placing this information in the catalog record, conservation information was publicly viewable, searchable, and protected by regular database backups. This article describes the process of implementing the MARC 583 field at Penn State for conservation documentation, including selecting standards, encoding the field, and outcomes from the project.
