Meltdown at Fukushima

How do we integrate topics such as a global catastrophic event with visual literacy? With a spotlight on the 2011 tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear reactors on the coast of Japan, this chapter discusses theory and practice for an innovative thematic curriculum unit. This unit integrates formal studio skills with student learning about an international environmental crisis affecting geographical shores and water life. Students studied the environmental effects of radioactive contamination on sea life in the Pacific Ocean, and ongoing problems and concerns for people in Japan, the U.S. and beyond. Following research activities, students focused on studio work to create mixed-media and brilliantly colored ocean creatures, culminating in a group exhibition entitled Radioactive Seafood Market. The exhibition functioned as a powerful visual learning experience about art and global issues, for both students and the viewing public. Student artwork and exhibition examples include elementary and high school students, and pre-service teachers for high school art education and K-5 classrooms.

This study first approaches the history of the observer’s gaze, that is, as observers, we are forming or constructing our way of visualizing moving images. Secondly, it reaffirms the importance and need of resistance of the teaching / learning of Art as a compulsory curricular component for high school. Finally, the third part reports an experience with video art production in a class of first year high school students, establishing an interrelationship between theory and practice, that is, we study video art content to reach the production of videos, aiming as a final result, the art videos created by the students of the Reference Center in Environmental Education Forest School Prof. Eidorfe Moreira High School. The first and second stages of this research share a theoretical part of the Master ‘s thesis, Making films on the Island: audiovisual production as an escape line in Cotijuba, periphery of Belem, completed in 2013.

To highlight the link between colour blindness and school achievement, the Ishihara and Farnsworth tests were administered to 3,565 high school art students (2,545 girls and 1,020 boys). Analysis showed colour defective students were discriminated against in theoretical subject matter, relative to orthochromate students, but not in the art-related subjects. This emphasizes the need to recognize youth with colour defective vision early.

With the amount of speeches delivered on social networks that students browse continuously, it is possible to use this mechanism as an additional support for classes. This research, using this possibility, seeks to present a didactic sequence applied to high school students from a public school, whose objective is to examine the concept of logic, present in the speeches of the two main candidates for the presidency of Brazil, in 2018 The proposal is to demonstrate to students how the concepts of logic can be identified in discourses that permeate the social environment and are part of the reality experienced by students. It is hoped that this research can contribute as a reference to an activity of theory and practice, such a relevant discussion in the school scenario.

The VISIR+ project was an international collaboration project for the dissemination of the remote laboratory VISIR, a tool to support teaching the theory and practice of electrical and electronic circuits. The initiative was first disseminated in Europe, and Latin American countries such as Brazil followed. This chapter essentially aims to discuss the experience of the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil with the VISIR+ project. Various approaches were used for the dissemination of the initiative, including free courses for high school students, teacher training, and the creation of a virtual environment to discuss and share lesson plans that used the remote laboratory VISIR on their plots. In conclusion, the experience was observed as excellent for the institution and there was no reason to put the project ideas aside. After participating in the project, it becomes a challenge to ensure its sustainability.

String art on an octahedron provides a viable way to teach and illustrate geometric concepts to junior high school students. This learning experience also furnihes an opportunity to correlate mathematics and art. Furthermore, artistic geometric constructions often stimulate junior high school students, particularly those who do not fare well in other areas of mathematics. After completing the following construction, students and teache rs should agree that learning can be fun.

Japanese results from the Second International Mathematics Study (SIMS) for first-year middle school and third-year high school students appeared in Septemher 1981 under the title Chuugakkoo-Kookoo no Suugaku no Seiseki (Mathematics Achievement of Middle and High School Students). United States' results for SIMS for the eighth and twelfth graders appeared, respectively, in the April 1985 editions of the Arithmetic Teacher and Mathematics Teacher (McKnight and Travers 1985a, 1985b). More detailed results were available in a report entitled Second International Mathematics Study Summary Report for the United States of January 1985. Given the current state of thinking and interest on both sides of the Pacific in mathematics achievement, a look at some of the results for Japan in comparison with those of the United States is very timely.

The article analyses the methods and technologies of professional self-determination of students in the US education system. It has been found that the theory and practice of preparing students for professional self-determination has accumulated some positive experience in the development and use of activating career guidance methods and the formation and adaptation of career guidance programs with elements of activation of high school students. Also, the article presents the analysis of basic career guidance methods and technologies in the American high school. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has resulted in several countries being locked down, there has been a paradigm shift in terms of learning worldwide. As a result, educational institutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have acted swiftly and shifted from face-to-face education to distance learning. Thus, this study investigated high school students’ perspectives on the distance learning of mathematics. The research employed a quantitative method using a developed and validated online survey. The convenience sampling consisted of 580 high school students in Al Ain. Descriptive statistical analysis of the mean and standard deviation of scores was used and then interpreted based on Gagné’s rating (1991). In general, the results showed that the students had an ambivalent view of their distance learning experience. Notably, students’ most negative perceptions were about missing the interaction with teachers and colleagues, and disapproving of the unfavourably long screen times. Furthermore, 78.3% of the participants showed no preference for choosing to study mathematics by distance learning in the future, given a choice. This study has extra relevance since the process of distance learning has become more prevalent in the UAE owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, it is imperative that educational institutions try to understand the complexity and embedded nature of distance learning, and the challenges encountered by students while they are studying mathematics in an online environment.
