Product Information Quality (PIQ) is critical in manufacturing enterprises. Yet, the field lacks comprehensive methodologies for its evaluation. In this paper, the authors attempt to develop such a methodology, which is called Activity-based Measuring and Evaluating of PIQ (AMEQ) to form a basis for PIQ measurement and evaluation. The methodology encompasses a road map to measure and improve PIQ, an indicator system based on characteristics and logic-temporal sequences of processes, and a set of models to quantificationally describe, operate and measure the designing and manufacturing processes of mechanical product information. The methodology is illustrated through a business case. The results of the methodology are useful for determining and reviewing the best area for PIQ improvement activities.

The pipeline industry continues to look for ways to improve its compliance and performance. Management systems have increased prevalence in the pipeline industry, with recognition that carefully designed and well-implemented management systems are the fundamental method that should be used to keep people safe, protect the environment and align organizational activities. Experience has shown significantly better success rates with management system implementation, both in terms of the quality and speed, when the person responsible for the design, implementation and sustainment of the management system has an integrated set of technical and enabling competencies. However, there is currently no standardized competency model that can be used to support a Management Systems Professional’s specialized knowledge and skills. The paper outlines the competencies needed by individuals to be effective in the design, implementation, measurement and evaluation of management systems. Applying a ‘whole-person’ perspective, the model includes business, relational and technical competencies that contribute to performance excellence for management system practitioners, including outlining example behaviours at target level performance and proficiency, and supported by a defined body of knowledge. This paper describes the Management System Competency Model, including how it can be used to create a position-specific development program for application within various organizations. This research establishes a basis for the creation of a practical, systematic and easy to use development road map for individuals and organizations who use or leverage a management system.

Searching through online review sites becomes an alternative for consumers to obtain product information. The efficiency and effectiveness in finding quality information on the online review sites contributes to the popularity of online review sites among consumers at the moment. There are some previous studies discussing consumer trust on hotels being reviewed on online review sites, but the roles of information quality, homophily, and consumer risk propensity as antecedents of trust and online purchase intention are still questionable. The purpose of this study is to investigate how information quality, homophily, and consumer risk propensity affect consumer trust on hotels being reviewed on online review sites and on intention to make a reservation. A survey involving 430 young travelers from 16 countries was conducted in popular tourist destination. Results confirm that information quality influences consumers’ trust on hotel being reviewed and intention to make reservation. Moreover, consumer online trust is also found to affect intention to make reservation.

This study is aimed at developing internal reform plans for a water department of Seoul City by benchmarking it with selected best practices of the world. At first a performance indicator system was developed to logically evaluate concerns, problems, and issues of the Seoul water department. Since it is typical of Korean water services providers, the Seoul water department was selected while Tokyo's in Japan and Denver's in America were selected since they were considered as best practices of public waterworks much similar in governing structure to the one in Seoul. The results of benchmarking concluded that Seoul has traditionally been emphasizing more on “being a good public servant” providing drinking water services, and should be reformed in directions emphasizing ‘entrepreneurship’ to overcome its current limitations. Based on the results, a road map to reform the Seoul water department was established. Since it is typical in Korea, the reform plans and road map established were further recommended for reforming other drinking water services providers in Korea.

E-commerce is deemed as the sale and purchase of goods and services through the internet in exchange for money and data transfer to complete the transactions. E-commerce is at the forefront of transforming marketing strategies, based on new technologies, and facilitates product information and improved decision-making. In this way, marketing strategy increasingly require large amounts of information to better understand client needs, which raises the question of choosing the right marketing strategy to better fit consumer expectations. This literature review aims to shed light on both the recent growth of e-commerce literature and its interplay with consumer marketing strategy. Extant research has examined this change in human interaction due to social network building, mostly through the themes of online marketing and social media marketing, also comprehending issues such as cost efficiency, information quality and trust development towards online shopping. Nevertheless, existing research has not shown in full all the research streams, how they interact with each other and its potential knowledge development. Thus, a literature review on consumer marketing strategy for e-commerce in the last decade is opportune. This paper aims to identify research trends in the field through a Systematic Bibliometric Literature Review (LRSB) of research on marketing strategy for e-commerce. The review includes 66 articles published in the Scopus® database, presenting up-to-date knowledge on the topic. The LRSB results were synthesized across current research subthemes. The following findings are presented: Amidst the current competitive global business environment, companies tend to respond with strategies for e-commerce and online businesses that resort to e-commerce platforms and social networking to better understand consumer needs, facilitate consumer marketing strategy and share innovative information. The originality of the paper relies on its LRSB method, together with extant review of articles that have not been categorized so far.

At present, manufacturing enterprises in China and across the world are undergoing a critical period of transformation and upgrading for sustainable development, with various obstacles such as financing difficulties and imperfect production facilities. The emergence of the sharing economy may provide a feasible solution for manufacturing enterprises, but meanwhile, unpredictable risks are bound to arise in the process of Engagement in the Sharing Economy of Manufacturing Enterprises (ESEME), and the assessment for the risk of ESEME is an important issue that requires special attention. Based on the characteristics of ESEME, a risk assessment indicator system is constructed, and a matter–element extension based approach is proposed to assess the risk of ESEME. The comprehensive risk value of ESEME can be calculated, and by means of sensitivity analysis and combinatory analysis, sensitive risk indicators and the risk type of indicators are identified. The innovation is embodied in three aspects: the sharing economy is studied by the matter–element extension method, the minimum deviation weight is adopted, and the risk is identified by sensitivity analysis and combinatory analysis. This assessment method is applied to enterprise E, and good results are obtained. This work is conducive to promoting manufacturing enterprises to engage in the sharing economy, which provides an effective vision for enterprises to implement risk management strategies, and also offers references for the government to formulate relevant policies for ESEME.

A business case presents a retail company facing new competitors and consequently preparing a customer retention strategy. The business environment in which the company was operating prior to the arrival of new competitors can be described as a stable market. Bearing in mind the plans and marketing activities of a competitor retail chain and making use of the data mining methods a system is being devised for the purpose of preventing or at least buffering the churn trend. Development of an early warning indicator system based on data mining methods is also being described as a support to the management in early detection of both market opportunities and threats. Research in data mining could also be concentrated on applying existing data mining techniques to find the best solution regarding practical business problems in the public or private sector. Knowledge regarding how some business cases were solved using data mining techniques could contribute in a better understanding of the nature or data mining nature and help solve specific business issues.

This case study chapter brings two business cases in the domain of churn, both unique in many ways, combining almost all the topics covered inside book. The first business case presents a retail company facing new competitors and consequently preparing a customer-retention strategy. The case introduces the business environment in which the company was operating prior to the arrival of new competitors while the model is being devised for the purpose of preventing or at least buffering the churn trend as a reaction to the new competition. Development of an early warning indicator system based on data mining methods is also described as a support to the management in the early detection of both market opportunities and threats. The second business case describes the situation in a telecommunication company in the domain of churn prediction and churn mitigation. The churn project was divided into a few stages and is fully described in the chapter. The case explains how the company can decrease the churn rate and gives directions for better understanding of customer needs and behaviors.
