Proven Interaction Design Solutions for Accessing and Viewing Interactive TV Content Items

This chapter describes interaction design solutions for interactive television (iTV) applications. A user task-based approach to interaction design guidance for iTV applications is suggested to easily integrate with a user-centred application development process. Based on the analysis of existing applications, several generic, iTV-specific user tasks are presented. For these user tasks, proven interaction design solutions were empirically identified by usability testing eight broadcasted applications. Specific design solutions to support the user tasks accessing content item and viewing content item are described. Usability test results and design guidance on the design of menus, video multi-screens, indexes, content presentation areas, paging, and scrolling are presented. Target audiences of this chapter are the iTV user interface designers and usability researchers.

This paper reports on the design, prototype implementation, and formative evaluation of a software tool—IDEAL (Interface Design Environment and Analysis Lattice). IDEAL integrates usability engineering techniques and behavioral task representations with a graphical hierarchy of user tasks to support formative evaluation of an evolving user interface. Representative users of IDEAL—interface designers and evaluators—participated in two phases of formative evaluation of IDEAL. Empirical evaluation showed IDEAL to be useful as an automated tool for managing the interrelated tasks of user interface development, including interaction design, usability specification, creation of benchmark tasks, and formative evaluation, that are currently performed manually.

Usaha Kecil dan Menengah (UKM) merupakan suatu kegiatan usaha menghasilkan suatu produk komoditi yang berada pada level menengah kebawah, dimana sektor usaha ini lebih menyentuh langsung dalam hal peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat luas yang pada umumnya adalah masyarakat menengah kebawah, sektor usaha UKM mampu memberikan pertumbuhan ekonomi yang signifikan walaupun pertumbuhannya tidak cepat seperti sektor perekonomian yang lain. Rancang bangun model perangkat lunak UKM Kota Palembang diharapkan mampu memberikan stimulus yang pesat terhadap pertumbuhan ekonomi khususnya sektor UKM Kota Palembang serta membantu pihak – pihak yang terkait baik instansi yang membutuhkan, masyarakat luas dan para inventor, dimana dalam mengembangkan rancang bangun model perangkat lunak UKM Kota Palembang meggunakan 2 metode yaitu metode Database Lifecylce untuk pengembangan Database sebagai media penyimpanan data melalui beberapa proses antara lain Design Database secara Konseptual, Design Database secara Logikal serta Design Database secara Fisikal dan metode Rapid Application Development (RAD) untuk pengembangan User Interface sebagai rancangan tampilan terhadap rancang bangun model perangkat lunak UKM Kota Palembang.

The purpose of this paper is to present a case for the development of a user interface design guideline or standard for interactive voice response applications, to be widely disseminated throughout business and industry. A number of sample problems are cited, based on the author's consulting experience in this area, which serve to demonstrate that many of the problems encountered in IVR application development, particularly in scripting/dialogue design and use of automated speech recognition as a front-end, are not only solvable, but easily avoidable, given the current human factors knowledge base. The paper also discusses the Specification Document developed by the Voice Messaging User Interface Forum (1990, April), and the reasons why it cannot be applied, as written, to the user interface design of more complex IVR applications. Finally, the author proposes an approach to developing the proposed guideline/standard.

Information technology has developed rapidly from time to time. One of the technologies commonly owned by many people today is smartphones with the Android and IOS platforms. By knowing this factor, mobile developers compete with each other to design applications with attractive user interfaces so that users are interested in using them. At this stage in mobile application development, starting from designing a user interface prototype. This stage aims to visualize user needs, improve user experience and simplify the coding process by programmers. In this study, researchers applied the prototype method. This research produces a prototype design for the e-learning application user interface which consists of a high fidelity prototype.

The goal of the article is to choose the most efficient user interface creation tools possible for Spring. The study compares 4 selected view technologies: JSP,  Thymeleaf, Wicket and Angular. Time and memory performance tests were carried out using Rest API in Spring. Test results allowed to identify the best solutions.

We describe our analytical and experimental works on three novel variable valve actuation systems. These include a mechanical variable-lift and duration concept, a hydraulic-lost-motion variable-lift system, and a valve-deactivation mechanism with unique features. These devices differ in their complexity and versatility but offer a spectrum of design solutions applicable to a range of products. The strengths and weaknesses of these different approaches are discussed and analyzed, and some test results are presented.

In user interface design, model-driven approaches usually involve generative solutions, producing interface by successive transformations of a set of initial models. These approaches have obvious limitations, especially for advanced user interfaces. Moreover, top-down design approaches (as generative approaches are) are not appropriate for interactive application development in which users need to be included in the whole design process. Based on strong associations between task models and dialogue models, the authors propose a global process, which facilitates the design of interactive applications conforming to their models, including a rule-checking step. This process permits either to start from a task model or a user-defined prototype. In any case, it allows an iterative development, including iterative user modifications, in line with user-centered design standards.

The Web enters a new era where contents are to take the back seat and services will take the driver seat to form a service-oriented Web. This paper presents a service-oriented user interface design for the next generation Web. The design leverages the advances of semantic Web and service composition technologies to provide an intelligent and generic user interface to query, compose and execute Web services for a variety of user tasks. First, a simple cost model is developed for estimating the development and learning overheads of Web service interfaces for service-oriented applications as the motivation of this work. Then, the authors present the design of the service-oriented browser and discuss the enabling technologies. A prototype system is developed using existing technologies and standards as a proof of concept.

This chapter presents a case study of using interaction design methods for exploring and testing usability and user experience of a Personal Health Record (PHR) user interface based on visual and graphical elements. To identify problems and improve the design of PHR user interface we conducted two taskoriented usability testing based on the think-aloud technique for observing users during their interaction with a high-fidelity PHR prototype, and questionnaires and semistructured interviews for measuring user satisfaction. Our study demonstrates that a user-centered approach to interaction design involving the final users in an iterative design-evaluation process is important for exploring innovative user interfaces and for identification of problems in the early stages of the development cycle of a PHR.
