The Usability Dimension in the Development of Web Applications

Given the emergent need for usability, during last year’s traditional development processes have been extended for enabling the fulfillment of usability requirements. Usability Evaluation Methods (UEMs) have been therefore proposed at any stage of the development process, to verify the usability of incremental design artifacts, as well as of the final product. This chapter surveys the most emergent UEMs, to be adopted during the whole lifecycle of Web information systems for promoting usability. For each evaluation method, the main features, as well as the emerging advantages and drawbacks are illustrated. Some future trends, related to the need of evaluating the usability of UEMs are also discussed.

This chapter presents the WDP (Web Design Perspectives-based Usability Evaluation), an inspection technique specifically designed to assess the usability of Web applications. This technique combines Web design perspectives and the heuristic evaluation method proposed by Nielsen (1994b). In addition to describing the components of the WDP technique this chapter also illustrates its use in practice by means of an industrial case study where the technique is applied to inspect a real Web application. In this case study, developers and requirement assessment staff applied the WDP technique to evaluate the usability of modules developed from scratch for a Web application. The results of this case study indicate the feasibility of performing usability inspections with the participation of a software project’s stakeholders, even when stakeholders are not usability experts.

The Internet, World Wide Web (WWW) and e-learning are contributing to new forms of teaching and learning. Such environments should be designed and evaluated in effective ways, considering both usability- and pedagogical issues. The selection of usability evaluation methods (UEMs) is influenced by the cost of a methods and its effectiveness in addressing users’ issues. The issue of usability is vital in e-learning, where students cannot begin to learn unless they can first use the application. Heuristic evaluation (HE) remains the most widely-used usability evaluation method. This paper describes meta-evaluation research that investigated an HE of a web-based learning (WBL) application. The evaluations were based on a synthesised framework of criteria, related to usability and learning within WBL environments. HE was found to be effective in terms of the number and nature of problems identified in the target application by a complementary team of experienced experts. The findings correspond closely with those of a survey among learners.

Usability is a factor that indicates the success of an interactive product or system, such as a mobile application. The increasing use of smartphones demands a more accurate and effective usability evaluation method to find usability problems, so that they can be used for product improvement in the development process. This study compares the Cognitive Walkthrough method with Heuristic Evaluation in evaluating the usability of the SIRS Del eGov Center mobile application. Evaluation with these two methods will be carried out by three evaluators who act as experts. Finding problems and recommending improvements from each method will produce an improvement prototype made in the form of a high-fidelity prototype. Each prototype will be tested against ten participants using the Usability Testing method, which will generate scores through the SUS table. From the test scores, the percentage of Likert scale and the success rate of each prototype will be found. The results show that between the two usability evaluation methods, the Heuristic Evaluation method is the more effective method, finds more usability problems, and has a higher Likert scale percentage, which is 66.5%, while Cognitive Walkthrough is 64.75%.

This chapter faces the Web accessibility issue from the perspective of Web Information Systems Quality, which is the main topic of the handbook. The closed relation between both issues (and also standard Web technologies) will be explained. It will be proven that Web accessibility does not imply any extra effort; it is a consequence of good development and design practices. In order to achieve this objective the basic topics related to Web accessibility will be defined and necessary introductory information will be exposed, in order to set the basis for the understanding of the points of discussion, which form the main content of the chapter. Also, some benefits of Web accessibility will be proven and the myths related to Web accessibility will be refuted. By the end of the chapter, the future trends and the newest standard Web technologies that have been designed, taking into account Web accessibility needs, will be introduced.

In this paper represents the web design frameworks as a conceptual methodology to expend the probabilities reuse in Web applications. Firstly I have presented the importance for construction abstract and reusable directional design structures, demonstrating with different kinds of Web information Systems. Struts 2 is an elegant, extensible framework for creating enterprise ready web applications. It provides with a controller Servlet to manage and intercept the flow of requests. Hibernate Framework Technology as unique and well-organized resources to take immeasurable databases and also on how to implement persistent features in object-oriented system finished it. Java also consists of many useful APIs or Application Program Interfaces, some of which are mention in this paper. Java accepts a N-tier framework of MVC Model in platform and uses EJB, Struts WEB Framework and Hibernate technology.

The use of mobile phones for academic purpose has been on the rise in recent years. Most m-learning applications have been proved that they did not undergo usability evaluation while a few of the application underwent reliable usability evaluations. This paper reviews previous research that has been carried out to evaluate the usability of m-learning applications and how this approach could be integrated into the Agile development process in a bid to make a more effective and usable m-learning application. We focus on previous works that has been done in both, mobile application usability and integration of agile approaches for Usability evaluation. The incorporation of agile development processes and the usability evaluation of m-learning applications has produced a significant impact. This is seen as more m-learning applications are done in the sprints with the usability evaluation preceding it and following the development process which makes the applications more usable and user friendly.

This chapter introduces the Web Engineering Resources Portal (WEP) as a basic reference model and guide for Web Engineers. WEP provides a general classification of Web Engineering resources under technologies, research results, and tools. It consists of a reference model and a resources portal. The objective of the WEP reference model is to provide a common basic terminology, a technical-oriented classification of Web applications (WebApps), a specification of WebApps Logical and Physical Architectures, a classification of skills needed in Web projects and a generic and adaptable Web lifecycle process model. The WEP reference model provides the framework upon which Web Engineering resources are classified and presented. The WEP portal provides several and cross-referenced taxonomies of technologies, research results, and tools whereas its objective is to facilitate Web Engineers to comprehend available resources, understand their role and appropriately use them during development and operation/maintenance of Web information systems.

Abstract Background There are some inconsistencies regarding the selection of the most appropriate usability evaluation method. The present study aimed to compare two expert-based evaluation methods in a nursing module, as the most widely used module of a Hospital Information System (HIS). Methods The Heuristic Evaluation (HE) and Cognitive Walkthrough (CW) methods were used by five independent evaluators to evaluate the nursing module of Shafa HIS. In this regard, the number, severity and ratio of the recognized problems according to the usability attributes were compared using two evaluation methods. Results The use of the HE and CW evaluation methods resulted in the identification of 104 and 24 unique problems, respectively. The average severity of the recognized problems was 2.32 in the HE method and 2.77 in the CW evaluation method; however, there was a significant difference between the number and severity of recognized usability problems by these methods (P < 0.001). Some problems, which were associated with effectiveness, satisfaction and error, were better recognized by the HE method; however, CW evaluation method was more successful in recognizing problems of learnability, efficiency and memorability. Conclusion The HE method recognized more problems with a lower average severity. On the other hand, CW could recognize fewer problems with a higher average severity. Regarding the evaluation goal, HE method would be used to improve effectiveness, increase satisfaction and decrease the number of errors. Furthermore, CW evaluation method is recommended to be used to improve the learnability, efficiency and memorability of the system.
