Users' Relevance on the Web

In this chapter the author analyzes, from a cognitive pragmatics point of view and, more specifically, from a relevance-theoretic approach, the way Internet users assess the qualities of web pages in their search for optimally relevant interpretive outcomes. The relevance of a web page is measured as a balance between the interest that information provides (the so-called “positive cognitive effects” in relevance theory terminology) and the mental effort involved in their extraction. On paper, optimal relevance is achieved when the interest is high and the effort involved is low. However, as the relevance grid in this chapter shows, there are many possible combinations when measuring the relevance of content on web pages. The author also addresses how the quality and design of web pages may influence the way balances of interest (cognitive effects) and mental effort are assessed by users when processing the information contained on the web page. The analysis yields interesting implications on how web pages should be designed and on web usability in general.

The World Wide Web has emerged to become the biggest and most popular way of communication and information dissemination. Every day, the Web is expending and people generally rely on search engine to explore the web. Because of its rapid and chaotic growth, the resulting network of information lacks of organization and structure. It is a challenge for service provider to provide proper, relevant and quality information to the internet users by using the web page contents and hyperlinks between web pages. This paper deals with analysis and comparison of web pages ranking algorithms based on various parameters to find out their advantages and limitations for ranking web pages and to give the further scope of research in web pages ranking algorithms. Six important algorithms: the Page Rank, Query Dependent-PageRank, HITS, SALSA, Simultaneous Terms Query Dependent-PageRank (SQD-PageRank) and Onto-SQD-PageRank are presented and their performances are discussed.

La calidad en Internet tiene un gran valor, y más aún cuando se trata de una página web sobre salud como es un recurso sobre drogodependencias. El presente artículo recoge los estimadores y sistemas más destacados sobre calidad web para el desarrollo de un sistema específico de valoración de la calidad de recursos web sobre drogodependencias. Se ha realizado una prueba de viabilidad mediante el análisis de las principales páginas web sobre este tema (n=60), recogiendo la valoración, desde el punto de vista del usuario, de la calidad de los recursos. Se han detectado aspectos de mejora en cuanto a la exactitud y fiabilidad de la información, autoría, y desarrollo de descripciones y valoraciones de los enlaces externos. AbstractThe quality in Internet has a great value, and still more when is a web page on health like a resource of drug dependence. This paper contains the estimators and systems on quality in the web for the development of a specific system to value the quality of a web site about drug dependence. A test of viability by means of the analysis of the main web pages has been made on this subject, gathering the valuation from the point of view of the user of the quality of the resources. Aspects of improvement as the exactitude and reliability of the information, responsibility, and development of descriptions and valuations of the external links have been detected.

The different web mining methods and techniques can help to solve some typical issues of the contemporary websites, contribute to more effective personalization, improve a website structure and reorganize its web pages. However, only several papers tried to combine web structure and web usage mining (WUM) methods with this aim. The paper researches if and how the combination of selected web structure and WUM methods can identify misplaced web pages and how they can contribute to improving the website structure. The paper analyzes the relationship between the estimated importance of the web page from the web page creator’s point of view using the web structure mining method based on PageRank and visitors’ real perception of the importance of that individual web page using the WUM method based on sequence patterns analysis, which eliminates the problem with repeated visits of the same web page during one session. The results prove that the expected probability of accesses to the individual web page correlates with the observed visit rate obtained from the log files using the WUM method. Furthermore, the website can be improved based on the consequent application of the residual analysis on the obtained results. The applicability of the proposed combination of the web structure and WUM methods is presented on two case studies from different application domains of the contemporary web. As a result, the web pages, which are underestimated or overestimated by the web page creators, are successfully identified in both cases.

The major complaint users have about using the Web is that they must wait for information to load onto their screen. This is more acute in countries where bandwidth is limited and fees are high. Given bandwidth limitations, Web pages are often hard to accelerate. Predictive feedback information is assumed to distort Internet users’ perception of time, making them more tolerant of low speed. This paper explores the relationship between actual Web page loading delay and perceived Web page loading delay and two aspects of user satisfaction: the Internet user’s satisfaction with the Web page loading delay and satisfaction with the Web page displayed. It also investigates whether predictive feedback information can alter Internet user’s perception of time. The results show that, though related, perceived time and actual time differ slightly in their effect on satisfaction. In this case, it is the perception of time that counts. The results also show that the predictive feedback information displayed on the Web page has an effect on the Internet user’s perception of time, especially in the case of slow Web pages.

Purpose The strong regulation of the Spanish pharmaceutical sector encourages pharmacies to modify their business model, giving the customer a more relevant role by integrating 2.0 tools. However, the study of the implementation of these tools is still quite limited, especially in terms of a customer-oriented web page design. This paper aims to analyze the online presence of Spanish community pharmacies by studying the profile of their web pages to classify them by their degree of customer orientation. Design/methodology/approach In total, 710 community pharmacies were analyzed, of which 160 had Web pages. Using items drawn from the literature, content analysis was performed to evaluate the presence of these items on the web pages. Then, after analyzing the scores on the items, a cluster analysis was conducted to classify the pharmacies according to the degree of development of their online customer orientation strategy. Findings The number of pharmacies with a web page is quite low. The development of these websites is limited, and they have a more informational than relational role. The statistical analysis allows to classify the pharmacies in four groups according to their level of development Practical implications Pharmacists should make incremental use of their websites to facilitate real two-way communication with customers and other stakeholders to maintain a relationship with them by having incorporated the Web 2.0 and social media (SM) platforms. Originality/value This study analyses, from a marketing perspective, the degree of Web 2.0 adoption and the characteristics of the websites, in terms of aiding communication and interaction with customers in the Spanish pharmaceutical sector.

Web page clustering is an important technology for sorting network resources. By extraction and clustering based on the similarity of the Web page, a large amount of information on a Web page can be organized effectively. In this paper, after describing the extraction of Web feature words, calculation methods for the weighting of feature words are studied deeply. Taking Web pages as objects and Web feature words as attributes, a formal context is constructed for using formal concept analysis. An algorithm for constructing a concept lattice based on cross data links was proposed and was successfully applied. This method can be used to cluster the Web pages using the concept lattice hierarchy. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm is better than previous competitors with regard to time consumption and the clustering effect.

Inform plays a very important role in life and nowadays, the world largely depends on the World Wide Web to obtain any information. Web comprises of a lot of websites of every discipline, whereas websites consists of web pages which are interlinked with each other with the help of hyperlinks. The success of a website largely depends on the design aspects of the web pages. Researchers have done a lot of work to appraise the web pages quantitatively. Keeping in mind the importance of the design aspects of a web page, this paper aims at the design of an automated evaluation tool which evaluate the aspects for any web page. The tool takes the HTML code of the web page as input, and then it extracts and checks the HTML tags for the uniformity. The tool comprises of normalized modules which quantify the measures of design aspects. For realization, the tool has been applied on four web pages of distinct sites and design aspects have been reported for comparison. The tool will have various advantages for web developers who can predict the design quality of web pages and enhance it before and after implementation of website without user interaction.

In the Web 1.0 era, users were passive consumers of a read-only Web. However, the emergence of Web 2.0 redefined the way people use information and communication services—users evolved into prosumers that actively participate and collaborate in the ecosystem of a read-write Web. Consequently, marketing is one among many areas affected by the advent of the Web 2.0 paradigm. Web 2.0 enabled the global proliferation of social networking, which is the foundation for Social Media Marketing. Social Media Marketing represents a novel Internet marketing paradigm based on spreading brand-related messages directly from one user to another. This is also the reason why Social Media Marketing is often referred to as the viral marketing. This chapter will describe: (1) how social networking became the most popular Web 2.0 service, and (2) how social networking revolutionized Internet marketing. Both issues will be elaborated on two levels—the global and the Croatian level. The chapter will first present the evolution of social networking phenomenon which has fundamentally changed the way Internet users utilize Web services. During the first decade of 21st century, millions of people joined online communities and started using online social platforms, about 1.5 billion members of social networks globally in 2012. Furthermore, the chapter will describe how Internet marketing provided marketers with innovative marketing channels, which offer marketing campaign personalization, low-cost global access to consumers, and simple, cheap, and real-time marketing campaign tracking. Specifically, the chapter will focus on Social Media Marketing, the latest step in the Internet marketing evolution. The three most popular Social Media Marketing platforms (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare) will be described, and examples of successful marketing case studies in Croatia will be presented.

In this paper the authors are going to propose a new rank measurement technique by introducing weightage factor based on number of Web links available on a particular Web page. Available Web links are considered as an important importance indicator. Distinct weightage factor is assigned to the Web pages as these are calculated based on the Web links. Different Web pages are evaluated more accurately due to the independent and uniqueness of weightage factor. Better Web page ranking is achieved as it depends on specific weightage factor. Impact of unwanted intruder is minimized by the introduction of this weightage factor.

Nowadays the Web page is one of the most common medium used by people, institutions, and companies to promote themselves, to share knowledge, and to get through to every body in every part of the world. In spite of that, the Web page does not entitle one to a specific legal protection and because of this, every investment of time and money that stays off-stage is not protected by an unlawfully used. Seeing that no country in the world has a specific legislation on this issue in this chapter, we develop a theory that wants to give legal protection to Web pages using laws and treatment that are just present. In particular, we have developed a theory that considers Web pages as a database, so extends a database’s legal protection to Web pages. We start to analyze each component of a database and to find them in a Web page so that we can compare those juridical goods. After that, we analyze present legislation concerning databases and in particular, World Intellectual Property Organization Copyright Treatments and European Directive 96/92/CE, which we consider as the better legislation in this field. In the end, we line future trends that seem to appreciate and apply our theory.
