Educating for “Buoyancy”

The future of education matters to all of us. This chapter presents a theoretical-inductive construction of the future of education, inspired by the advancements envisaged in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (also abbreviated to Industry 4.0 or IR4.0). Recent developments in the technological field make it imperative that university syllabi foster and grow technological and non-cognitive soft skills in tandem. The latter—socio-emotional skills—are considered crucial skills that endow “buoyancy” and resilience to the workforce. Empathy, cultural sensitivity, and tolerance are the key professional skills that should be nurtured among the upcoming generation of digital natives. The chapter builds on a previous publication and aims at advancing concrete proposals for the future of university education.

The aim of the paper is to propose a composite indicator characterising the level of development of Polish NUTS 2 regions with respect to the implementation and results of the changes the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) entails, and to present a ranking of regions illustrating the degree to which enterprises have adjusted to the requirements of Industry 4.0. Data used for the calculations have been based on the results of an experimental research conducted by Statistics Poland (GUS) in 2019. Two methods for constructing the composite indicators have been used – classical and iterative which is to assess the indicator’s resilience to the influence of any potential outliers. 10 sub-criteria, covered by 21 variables have been taken into account. Opolskie region appeared to be the best NUTS 2 region in Poland in terms of the implementation of the requirements outlined by Industry 4.0. The evaluation of the proposed composite indicator will be possible when comparing it with the results of similar surveys carried out by GUS in the future.

With the developments in technology and innovation, the manufacturing, workforce, training, and educational systems were affected. Facing the fourth industrial revolution, academics are researching the possible changes that might arise in education and skills of the future workforce. As the workplace develops, new competencies will surface. With this context in mind, the authors initiated this research. A detailed questionnaire was prepared as a pilot study to comprehend students' views on the use of technology in classrooms and its impact on their learning experience and engagement. Knowledge of their views allowed the authors to draw inferences as to the skills and competencies of future students and whether they would match Industry 4.0. Furthermore, a gap analysis was conducted, whereby the existing situation at a Canadian higher educational institution was compared to the desired situation, and recommendations were put forward.

The current era is witnessing many changes on various levels. The information and communication revolutions are considered one of the important changes which has cast a shadow over how different institutions in society work via the phenomenon of digitization. As some of the most important institutions of society, industrial companies have been responding to this phenomenon of digital transformation to improve products and customer service while achieving a significant profitable return. This response by these institutions to the digital transformation has resulted in the emergence of the so-called fourth industrial revolution. In this context, this chapter reviews the definition of digital transformation as well as its dimensions, benefits, and obstacles. It also comments on the future of digital transformation and its relationship with industry. Ultimately it presents the fourth industrial revolution in terms of its definition, history, criteria, benefits, and the challenges it faces moving into the future.

The key to the future of any country in the modern world lies in the knowledge, skills and talent of its population. This gives a special importance to education through which human capital is created as an important component of national wealth. Different methods of measuring human capital are found in literature. There is a well-known division into monetary and non-monetary methods, with the latter being specifically addressed in the article. Education plays an important role in achieving sustainable development. Through education, knowledge about sustainable development is acquired while human resources that are capable and willing to achieve this development are created. Education, just like sustainable development, has a long-time perspective. In both cases, the interests of the future are respected when making decisions in the present. The impact of education on sustainable development is manifested through all three of its dimensions ? economic, social and environmental. The key role of education for achieving sustainable development has been globally recognized and embedded in relevant United Nations documents, including a new global development agenda by 2030, focusing on the Sustainable Development Goals, of which Objective 4 explicitly refers to education. The European Union also pays considerable attention to education for the future in the context of the commitment of its members to achieve sustainable development. Serbia, at least declaratively, follows it, given the orientation of the country to join this regional integration. The future of education is under the strong influence of global mega trends, especially the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which strongly influences the world of work and the necessary knowledge and skills. During the earlier industrial revolutions, it took several decades to build appropriate education and training systems, but there is no time for that now. Changes must be anticipated, and reactions should be quick. The quality of educational systems of countries around the world and their preparedness for the challenges of the new age can be evaluated on the basis of the results of the Program for International Student Assessment ? PISA, the most important research in the field of education, which, under the auspices of the OECD, tests the knowledge and skills of fifteen-year-olds, and relying on the composite indicator introduced by the World Economic Forum ? Global Human Capital Index (GHCI). The results for Serbia are generally discouraging, but in some segments, they point to the country?s hidden potentials that should be activated. Education represents the development opportunity of Serbia at the threshold of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As a small and economically country, Serbia should not remain at the margin of events, in the role of a passive observer. On the contrary, through adapting its education system to the demands of time by adequate financial and institutional support, thus improving human capital of the people, Serbia can find its place in a changing labor market and create preconditions for dynamic and sustainable economic development.

Next-generation technologies such as robotics, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, sensors, cognitive technologies, nanotechnology, quantum computing, wearable technologies, augmented reality, intelligent signaling, and intelligent robots have led the fourth industrial revolution, often referred to as Industry 4.0. With the rapid advance of technology, most people today rely heavily on the internet to get information while traveling anywhere, because the use of technology has deeply penetrated daily life. The internet also makes travel easier and more convenient. For instance, it is possible to plan travel using smartphones and applications and at the same time meet instant travel needs as they arise. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine tourism guidance within the scope of the super-smart tourists of the future, to determine the usage areas of next-generation technologies in the field of tourism guidance, and to give recommendations for tourism guidance in this regard.

Recent developments in production processes and their automation have led to the definition of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, commonly known as “Industry 4.0”. Industry 4.0 is a very broad domain that includes: production processes, efficiency, data management, relationship with consumers, competitiveness, and much more. At the same time, obviously, Industry 4.0 has become a new theme for management scholars and business economics disciplines and a number of contributions covering various issues and aspects have been published. However, a systematic formulation of all these contributions is still lacking in management literature. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to analyze and classify the main contributions published on the topic of Industry 4.0 in management literature, seeking to give it a unique definition, discover the gaps still remaining in literature and outline future avenues of research in this domain. A systematic review of the literature of the major academic and research databases has been used as methodology to achieve the aim of the paper. This work contributes theoretically to the development of literature on Industry 4.0 and from a managerial perspective it could support entrepreneurs in better understanding the implications and fields of application of the Fourth Industrial Revolution as well as the interplay among them.

Im Zuge der Einführung von Industrie 4.0 fühlen sich viele Unternehmen überfordert, zielgerichtete und bedarfsgerechte Einführungsstrategien zu entwickeln. Dieser Fachbeitrag stellt ein unternehmensindividuelles und problemorientiertes Vorgehen vor, bei dem ausgehend von einer Reifegradermittlung Potentiale ermittelt und mit Methoden der Industrie 4.0 gehoben werden. Diskutiert werden die iterativen Schritte für eine problemspezifische Auswahl und Anwendung von Industrie 4.0-Methoden.   Considering recent developments in terms of the industrial progression to “smart factories” and the fourth industrial revolution, companies are overwhelmed and seem to be incapable to develop appropriate implementation strategies. This paper focuses on an individual, problem-oriented approach in order to assess and implement Industry 4.0 methods based on a maturity model. Therefore, the iterative steps of an approach for achieving a problem-specific Industry 4.0 implementation are discussed.

The rapid pace of technological developments played a key role in the previous industrial revolutions. However, the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) and its embedded technology diffusion progress is expected to grow exponentially in terms of technical change and socioeconomic impact. Therefore, coping with such transformation require a holistic approach that encompasses innovative and sustainable system solutions and not just technological ones. In this article, we propose a framework that can facilitate the interaction between technological and social innovation to continuously come up with proactive, and hence timely, sustainable strategies. These strategies can leverage economic rewards, enrich society at large, and protect the environment. The new forthcoming opportunities that will be generated through the next industrial wave are gigantic at all levels. However, the readiness for such revolutionary conversion require coupling the forces of technological innovation and social innovation under the sustainability umbrella.
