IoT solutions represent one of the most powerful approaches towards asset and maintenance management supporting a multi-user environment that can be adopted to monitor machine and guide decision-making at different levels. Several studies discussed the benefits that may be achieved, but few studies discussed how to implement such a complex process that should consider a systematic approach in the development of the infrastructure, platform content, analytics, and internal processes reengineering. To this purpose, the presented chapter describes an IoT platform implementation in a manufacturing company. Specifically, the case study illustrates the steps that have been followed to develop and implement the IoT solution, namely (1) definition of the platform desired functionalities; (2) reengineering of the business processes affected by the platform; (3) development of the proof of concept of the platform dashboards, also considering the data to be sent to the platform; and (4) the implementation of the IoT platform with the connection of customer machines.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate and explain how organizations in the construction sector can enhance their decision-making process (DMP) by practising knowledge management (KM) and business process management (BPM) activities. A conceptual framework is developed that recognises the elements that impact DMP in terms of KM and BPM. The development of this framework goes beyond current empirical work on KM in addition to BPM as it investigates a wider variety of variables that impact DMP. Design/methodology/approach A case study is undertaken in the context of the construction industry in Jordan. A theoretical framework is developed and assessment of the proposed framework was undertaken through a questionnaire survey of decision-makers in the construction sector and expert interviews. Findings The outcomes of this research provide several contributions to aid decision-makers in construction organizations. Growth in the usage of KM and BPM, in addition to the integration between them, can provide employees with task-related knowledge in the organization’s operative business processes, improve process performance, promote core competence and maximise and optimise business performance. Originality/value Through the production of a framework, this study provides a tool to enable improved decision-making. The framework generates a strong operational as well as theoretical approach to the organizational utilization of knowledge and business processes.

Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang does not yet have a system and criteria for assessing the performance of non-P3K employees. Currently the staffing office at the University of Singaperbangsa Karawang does not yet have a way to determine how an employee is entitled to a Performance Allowance. Based on these facts, a website-based employee performance allowance information system will be created with a case study of the staff of the singaperbangsa karawang university. The system to be built includes the definition of criteria, data processing to become the best employee recommendation / promotion and determination of Employee Performance Allowances. The methodology used is software engineering and uses the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) method with the waterfall model because it is in accordance with the research that will be carried out with a relatively short stage of system usage. The calculation process is done by using the method of fuzzy multiple attribute decision making with weighted product because this method determines the weight value for each attribute, then proceed with a ranking process that will select the best alternative from a number of alternatives. The system created can provide information about the amount of employee performance benefits and recommendations for promotion for employees. After evaluating the user, this system gets a response that is easy to understand and easy to understand on each menu on the system. Looking at the benefits of this system is useful when it will provide performance allowances to employees and at the time will determine the employees who are reconditioned for promotions. The design of employee recommendation decision support systems using fuzzy multiple attribute decision making is done by completing the weighted product to produce alternatives after verification with the existing data getting 60% accuracy.

This paper presents a framework of introducing GIS technology to record and analyse cultural heritages in continuous spatial scales. The research team is developing a systematic approach to support heritage conservation research and practice on historical buildings, courtyards, historical towns, and archaeological sites ad landscapes. These studies are conducted not only from the property or site scales, but also investigated from their contexts in setting as well as regional scales. From these continues scales, authenticity and integrity of a heritage can be interpreted from a broader spatial and temporal context, in which GIS would contribute through database, spatial analysis, and visualization. The case study is the construction of a information indexing framework of Dagu Dock industrial heritage to integrate physical buildings, courtyards, natural settings as well as their intangible characteristics which are affiliated to the physical heritage properties and presented through historical, social and culture semantics. The paper illustrates methodology and content of recording physical and social/cultural semantics of culture heritages on different scales as well as connection between different levels of database.

PurposeThe contemporary practice of conventional maintenance for industrialised building system (IBS) constructions suffers from poor service delivery and defect repetition. A key problem impeding the widespread adoption of emerging technologies is the lack of competent contractors to support the effectiveness of the technology implemented in conventional methods and to ensure returns on investment. The shortcomings of conventional methods are assessed from the perspective of IBS buildings. This paper aims to identify the different system approach using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology that is equipped with decision making processes.Design/methodology/approachThis paper describes the establishment of key problem areas, the elements involved in implementing good practice and the requirements for integrating maintenance management processes and information databases in the maintenance management system.FindingsConventional methods have little emphasis on defect diagnosis tools. They also enhance inadequate strategic decision-making in the analysis of information when attempting to improve the maintenance project outcomes for IBS construction. The characteristics identified in a case study of IBS buildings are presented and analysed.Originality/valueThe conclusions and recommendations drawn from the analysis of the IBS case study are discussed, synthesised and deliberated upon. The approach presented in this paper integrates various aspects of building information modelling technology to facilitate improved execution of IBS maintenance activities.

Agility is an essential feature for SMEs and this chapter intends to examine if and how business processes, as currently understood, are able to promote it. Over the last years a number of viewpoints have emerged which exerted great influence on the design of notations and languages for business processes: the majority of them can be referred to as the centralized viewpoint, the role viewpoint, the conversational viewpoint, the case viewpoint and the cooperative one. These viewpoints provide different levels of agility and then beneficial results can be expected from their integration, which is the purpose of the proof-of-concept notation, AgileBPN, presented in this chapter. In AgileBPN, business processes are organized around conversations and role processes (encompassing the tasks pertaining to a given role); shared artifacts are represented as cooperative objects. The notation is illustrated with the help of an example referring to a business process meant to handle applications in a certain organization.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the maintenance performance indicators (MPIs) which are significant for maintenance decision making in the apparel industry through an accurate maintenance performance measurement. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research approach was followed. A questionnaire survey was used to collect the data which were evaluated based on Mean Weighted Rating and Relative Importance Index. Findings In total, 15 significant MPIs were determined which can directly affect maintenance decision making. A systematic approach was finally developed by allocating weightages for each critical MPI. Practical implications These results can be used to assist the decision-making process and as a performance measurement platform for maintenance management of the apparel industry. Originality/value The significance of maintenance has not been recognized and the value created through such massive efforts has remained hidden. Therefore, the need of adopting a performance-based approach for maintenance management in apparel industry exists. This research was aimed to provide a systematic approach to make decisions on maintenance management in the apparel industry in Sri Lanka.

This article provides a proof-of-concept of the applicability and reusability of the authors proposed framework for web service migration through a traffic jam detection case study. The framework migrates mobile hosted web services between mobile vehicles using context-aware self-adaptive mechanism in order to guarantee service availability and quality. A decision-making process is implemented to select the best destination vehicle from between the found possible migrations based on prioritized criteria set.

Research has recently begun to place greater emphasis on the strategic application of IT in seeking to integrate firms’ IT infrastructures and business processes, thus boosting companies’ business values. In this context, efforts have been made to formulate workable structures for companies’ IT governance (ITG); however, little practical research has considered the effect of different forms of ITG in a range of domestic and multinational companies. This study undertakes a comparative case study analysis of the ITG setups of three large service sector firms in Korea. This research work sought to identify the activities, types, and determinants of firms’ ITG decision making processes, and to suggest the basis on which forms of ITG may represent rational selections for given service companies. The study was based on in-depth interviews with representatives of three firms, analysis of in-house materials, and the application of multiple perspectives dealing with ITG domains. Case study analysis yielded a detailed picture of the characteristics of ITG related decision making within the firms, suggesting the validity of the proposed ITG framework. The proposed and partially validated ITG framework should be useful for further research and practice of ITG.

In the last three case studies there has been a logical progression through the management of change, considering first the definition of the problem; second, the development of a strategy for handling it; and third, the creation of an appropriate organizational structure. But, in today’s fast-moving world, there are many situations in which it is difficult to carry out this systematic approach. For example what do we do if change involves a technological jump, bringing with it new problems and challenges which have not been experienced before and which are poorly understood? This happened to white-collar work in the next case study. It has also happened many times in the past and is likely to happen many times in the future.

The case study describes the process of implementation of an integrated software package at the Thai subsidiary (SMTL) of a Hong Kong-based multinational company (SMHK) engaged in the manufacturing of electronic equipment. Several factors—such as a poor fit between the business process assumptions inscribed in the software and the business processes in SMTL, poor leadership at different levels, cultural clash between the headquarters and the Thai subsidiary, organizational politics, and poor human resource management—contributed to the confusion in the organization, project delays, budget overruns, and ultimately, to the “failure” of the systems implementation project. The case study is likely to be valuable for illustrating issues related to managing IS implementation in a multinational context.
