Collection of Breakdown and Discharge Research on Advanced Materials

Epoxy resins are widely used to build insulators in GIL. Epoxy/AlN nanocomposite can be produced by adding AlN nanoparticals to the epoxy resin. By studying the surface discharge behavior of the nanocomposites under different operating temperature, it is helpful to improve the creeping voltage of epoxy resin. Polypropylene is a kind of material which is usually chosen to build film capacitors. The effects of voltage form on surface charge and discharge behavior were studied. Furthermore, a modification method of a polypropylene film which can suppress surface charge accumulation is proposed. Polypropylene also has great application potential in HVDC cable insulation, provided that its toughness is to be overcome. Different mass fractions of ULDPE and graphene were added to polypropylen to improve mechanical and insulating properties, respectively. Studies on the DC conductivity, space charge behavior, trap level distribution, and breakdown strength of the new material were carried out.

Epoxy resin-impregnated insulation paper (RIP) composites are used as the inner insulation of dry condenser bushing in the ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) power transmission system. To improve the dielectric properties of RIP, nano-SiO2 is added to the insulation paper at concentrations of 0–4wt % before impregnation with pure epoxy resin. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy observations as well as the typical dielectric properties of relative permittivity, DC volume conductivity, DC breakdown strength, and thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC), were obtained. The effects of trap parameters on the breakdown field strength and volume conductivity were investigated. The DC breakdown electric field strength of the sample increased as the trap level increased. The maximum DC breakdown strength of nano-SiO2-modified RIP was increased by 10.6% the nano-SiO2 content of 2 wt %. The relative permittivity and DC volume conductivity were first decreased and then increased with increasing nano-SiO2 content. These changes occurred near the interfaces between nano-SiO2 and RIP. The increased DC breakdown strength was mainly attributed to the increased trap level.

To date, breakdown voltage is an underlying risk to the epoxy-based electrical high voltage (HV) equipment. To improve the breakdown strength of epoxy resin and to explore the formation of charge traps, in this study, two types of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) fillers are doped into epoxy resin. The breakdown voltage test is performed to investigate the breakdown strength of neat epoxy and epoxy/POSS composites. Electron traps that play an important role in breakdown strength are characterized by thermally stimulated depolarized current (TSDC) measurement. A quantum chemical calculation tool identifies the source of traps. It is found that adding octa-glycidyl POSS (OG-POSS) to epoxy enhances the breakdown strength than that of neat epoxy and epoxycyclohexyl POSS (ECH-POSS) incorporated epoxy. Moreover, side groups of OG-POSS possess higher electron affinity (EA) and large electronegativity that introduces deep-level traps into epoxy resin and restrain the electron transport. In this work, the origin of traps has been investigated by the simulation method. It is revealed that the functional properties of POSS side group can tailor an extensive network of deep traps in the interfacial region with epoxy and enhance the breakdown strength of the epoxy/POSS nanocomposite.

Five-membered heterocyclic N-oxides attracted special attention due to their strong application potential in medicinal chemistry and advanced materials science. In this regard, novel methods for their synthesis and functionalization are constantly required. In this short review, recent state-of-the-art achievements in the chemistry of isoxazoline N-oxides, 1,2,3-triazole 1-oxides and 1,2,5-oxadiazole 2-oxides are briefly summarized. Main routes to transition-metal-catalyzed and metal-free functionalization protocols along with mechanistic considerations are outlined. Transformation patterns of the hetarene N-oxide rings as precursors to other nitrogen heterocyclic systems are also presented.

The aim of the study is to assess the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the wear behavior of MWCNT-doped epoxy resin. In this study, a laminating resin system designed to meet the standards for motor planes was modified with MWCNTs at mass fractions from 0.0 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%. The properties of the carbon nanotubes were determined in Raman spectroscopy and HR-TEM. An examination of wear behavior was conducted on a linear abraser with a visual inspection on an optical microscope and SEM imaging, mass loss measurement, and evaluation of the wear volume on a profilometer. Moreover, the mechanical properties of MWCNTs/epoxy nanocomposite were evaluated through a tensile test and Shore D hardness test. The study shows that the best wear resistance is achieved for the mass percentage between 0.25 wt.% and 0.5 wt.%. For the same range, the tensile strength reaches the highest values and the hardness the lowest values. Together with surface imaging and a topography analysis, this allowed describing the wear behavior in the friction node and the importance of the properties of the epoxy nanocomposite.
