Women's in Leadership Position “Issues and Challenges”

Women face multi-faceted challenges in participating in management position due to different factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors that affect participation of women in leadership positions in Bahir dar city administration. To address this objective, the study adopted mixed research methods with descriptive survey design. A total of 190 women public civil servants were taken as a sample. Moreover, a key informant interview with women in leadership positions was conducted. In addition, FGD were also a very important data-gathering instrument for this study. The findings revealed that there are three major factors for women's low participation in leadership positions, i.e. institutional, socio-cultural and individual factors. Those factors have decisive contributions for low participation of women in leadership positions. With proper implementation of women's policies in the organization, equal treatment during assignment leadership positions, and creating awareness in society that woman are capable for leadership positions.

The main objective of this study was to identify Climate Change Related Disasters (CCRDs) in Arid and Semi-arid Lands such as Baringo County. The study used a descriptive survey design. Purposeful sampling and stratified proportionate random sampling procedures were used to obtain the Sample. A sample of 376 households were selected for the study in Baringo County. Questionnaire, key informant interview schedule and observations were the main instruments of data collection. Analysis of data was done using the SPSS. Percentages were used to analyse CCRDs. Drought, storms and floods are climate change related disasters affecting Baringo County. About 80 percent of the households strongly agreed that drought is the most common disasters affecting the County. Vegetation clearance is the main cause of CCRDs in Baringo County hence there is need to increase awareness on climate change and encourage people to use alternative sources of energy and plant trees.

The purpose of this research is to investigate factors that affect participation of women in leadership   position. . And for ward some possible suggestion for the challenges identified through this study. The study was descriptive in nature and survey solving method was used in data gathering. Data used in this research was mainly primary and secondary data as well, quantitative and qualitative types was incorporated. The data was collected by interviewing and conducting questionnaires. The study revealed that the current status of women participation was low in number in city administration and there are different factors that affect women’s participation in leadership position. The factors which contribute for women's low participation in leadership positions were categorized under three main factors: societal, institutional (organizational) and individual factors. It was observed those women’s career advancements are not affected by one factor alone but a combination of different factors.  From these factors the research found that three factors (institutional socio culture and individual) have decisive contribution for low participation of women in leader ship position. According to the respondents, there are institutional (organizational), socio culture and individual factors that have major contribution to the low representation of women in the leadership positions of governmental organization respectively by proper implementation of  women policies in the organization, equal treatment during assignment leadership position, providing training to build women’s capacity and creating awareness to the society that women capable for leadership position the researcher recommends that women should be encouraged and supported in order to compete on leadership positions.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the practices and challenges of continuous assessment in colleges of teachers’ education in western Oromia region. For this study, the researchers selected three colleges of teachers education purposely based on the job experience. The researchers selected Nekemte, Dembi Dollo and Shambo colleges teachers education from well, medium, lower experienced respectively. A descriptive survey design involving both qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed. 134 student-teachers and 178 college teachers were selected and participated in the study. The quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire and observation checklist and analyzed using frequency and percentage, whereas, the qualitative data interview and document analysis were analyzed using the narrative form and interpretative way. The finding of the study revealed that the extent of practicing continuous assessment in class is low. The study also showed that teachers have positive perceptions toward continuous assessment and they accepted continuous assessment as important to improve the achievement of learners. The finding disclosed that large class size, shortage of time, teachers workload, the low interest of students, large instructional content, and lack of commitment among teachers as the major factors hindering the practice of continuous assessment in colleges of teachers education. The researchers recommend that educational authorities and stockholders should make effort to students per class to manageable numbers, College administrators should allow teachers to cover the minimum workload than overloading above the standard set for the college of teachers education.

The advent of modernization and cutthroat competition necessitates an organization to dismantle if not redefine its directions and key positions in the market. This compelling reality prompted many corporations to change its vision, mission and goals and even to the point of system’s overhaul. Whatever modes adopted in order to get an edge in the market calls for participative and collegial decisions. However, strategic directions and corporate plans if conceptualized by the few “corporate think tank” only remain as beautiful as a piece of poetry. The absence of sense of ownership will convert these powerful ideas into garbage. Hence, cascading them to the entire system becomes a must. It is from this contention that this study was conceptualized. The primary aim of this study was to assess HNU’s practices in terms of corporate citizenship. The study used descriptive survey method. Personal interviews were effected in order to avoid bias and subjective interpretation of the questionnaire. Data gaps were addressed thru key informant interview. The findings showed that almost all parameters of corporate citizenship were given high regard, , but the prevalence of minute yet significant unfavorable data calls for an alarm.   Keywords - corporate citizenship, institutional tool, stakeholder’s participation

Conflicts between crop farmers and pastoralists have become a common feature of economic livelihood in West Africa. The study assessed the demographic implications of crop farmers-pastoralists conflict in Benue North-West, Nigeria. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and a sample of 120 respondents was purposively selected from the three LGAs mostly affected by the pastoralists’ attacks. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, key informant interview and field observations and analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentages and mean). The study in its course found that availability of evergreen arable land (3,27), competition over available evergreen arable lands (3.0), damage to crops (3.12) and the proliferation and availability of cheap small arms and light weapons (2.52) are the major causes of conflict in the area. The study also revealed that the conflict has both short and long term demographic implication on the affected communities. The study recommended sustainable measures towards addressing conflict in the affected communities.

This paper examined the factors that are likely to cause the discard of custom-made garments among female students of the University of Cape Coast. The descriptive survey design was used for the study and the total number of participants was 246.  The Predictive Analytical Software was employed for data analyses. The data gathered were analysed using inferential statistics and descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages. The study revealed that constructional factors form a higher percentage of the factors that lead respondents to discard their custom-made garments. The major factors that resulted in the discard of custom-made garments among the respondents were poorly stitched garments, poor fit, uncomfortable lining issues, and poor conditions of notions. Slit and Kaba (traditional dress for women in Ghana, the slit is an ankle length skirt and the kaba is a blouse) was the most frequently discarded custom-made garments among the respondents. It was recommended that in decreasing the rate of discard of custom-made garments, dressmakers should select appropriate stitches and notions for garment construction. They should ensure quality in the products they produce and check the fit of the garments properly before handing them over to clients to meet their expectations.

The study, tried to find out students’ role and perception in implementing one to five team work, examine to what extent school directors facilitate safe environment for the implementation of one to five teamwork and identify the major factors that might hamper the impleentation of one to five teamwork. In order to meet the research goal, descriptive survey design was employed, which involves both methods. In this study, 100 students participated in the research. Thus, descriptive statistics using frequencies and percentages were employed in analyzing the quantitative data and the qualitative data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study revealed that students perceived one to five education army development group works positively. However, the followings were found to be the main constraint encountered during one to five team work activities on the findings, it was concluded that one to five teamwork was not properly implemented by the majority of students as it was expected.

Trade plays a fundamental role in shaping the country’s economy and for this imported goods must be delivered to the market in the quickest possible time without unnecessary delay. This study covers the freight vehicles, which clears the custom clearance process for Kathmandu and transports the same goods to Kathmandu from Birgunj. In this study average processing time in Birgunj customs areas (Birgunj customs, Birgunj Inland Clearance Depot (ICD) and Birgunj Integrated Check-Post (ICD)) as well as factors affecting processing time in Birgunj customs area has also been explored. Custom Clearance time at the particular points was collected using the trained enumerators. Key Informant Interview (KII) was carried out to explore the factors affecting the processing time and the questionnaire survey was done to identify the factors affecting clearance time. The average processing time for vehicles in Birgunj customs, ICD and ICP for different types of, vehicles, goods and lanes assigned for goods were analyzed. Various factors that are affecting the processing were identified. In Birgunj customs, ICD and ICP in average approximately 30.1 hours, 2.8 hours and 19.2 hours respectively, extra time is being spent by freight vehicle inside the custom yard, other than actual processing time, which shows that there is mainly delay in-between the process other than in actual processing unit and the major factors for this are: owner not clearing the goods on time, due to lack of enough number of agents and unseen syndicate within the freight transportation system.

AbstractThe participation of women in the 1994 Rwandan genocide should be considered in the context of gender relations in pre-genocide Rwandan society. Many ‘ordinary’ women were involved in the genocide but, overall, committed significantly fewer acts of overt violence than men. Owing to the indirect nature of women's crimes, combined with male ‘chivalry’, women may be under-represented among those pursued for genocide-related crimes, despite the broad conception of complicity in Rwanda's Gacaca Law. Women in leadership positions played a particularly important role in the genocide, and gendered imagery, including of the ‘evil woman’ or ‘monster’, is often at play in their encounters with the law.
