E-commerce has become an integral part of businesses for decades in the modern world, and this has been exceptionally speeded up during the coronavirus era. To help businesses understand their current and future performance, which can help them survive and thrive in the world of e-commerce, this paper proposes a hybrid approach that conducts performance prediction and evaluation of the e-commerce industry by combining the Grey model, i.e., GM (1, 1) and data envelopment analysis, i.e., the Malmquist-I-C model. For each e-commerce company, GM (1, 1) is applied to predict future values for the period 2020–2022 and Malmquist-I-C is applied to calculate the efficiency score based on output variables such as revenue and gross profit and input variables such as assets, liabilities, and equity. The top 10 e-commerce companies in the US market are used to demonstrate model effectiveness. For the entire research period of 2016–2022, the most productive e-commerce marketplace on average was eBay, followed by Best Buy and Lowe’s; meanwhile, Groupon was the worst-performing e-commerce business during the studied period. Moreover, as most e-commerce companies have progressed in technological development, the results show that the determinants for productivity growth are the technical efficiency change indexes. That means, although focusing on technology development is the key to e-commerce success, companies should make better efforts to maximize their resources such as labor, material and equipment supplies, and capital. This paper offers decision-makers significant material for evaluating and improving their business performance.

This paper is a part of a research project funded by the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), to create a product serving the digital transformation of Egyptian manufacturing companies. It allows a manufacturing company to be a member of a distributed manufacturing network. The resulting system can be plugged into any ERP system. In this work, the limitation of a centralized integration entity to satisfy loosely coupling of distributed systems is overcome. The SOA framework and the remote method invocation (RMI) are applied using SOAP-XML technology. Enterprise integration patterns (EIP) were used in the architecture design.

This paper examines the value-normative transformation of the modern social system and analyzes the impact of digitalization processes on social relations and their development. The content of the article substantively analyzes the key areas of digitalization of social relations; the authors mark out in each of these areas positive and negative effects on the sustainable development of the socio-cultural integrity of society. The empirical material used in this work includes expert assessments and analytical materials related to the digital transformation of traditional religious systems and the value-normative foundations of society. The research perspectives presented in this paper evaluate and interpret all the events and processes under consideration from the conservative legal point of view, from the standpoint of the significance of the socio-cultural environment, sustainable traditional institutions and values for coding and predicting the digital transformation of society in the 21st century. In the conclusion of the study, the authors substantiate the adequacy of the doctrinal and legal model of society’s development called “digital etatism” from the perspective of ensuring stable socio-cultural development and the integrity of the social system.

During the past two decades, application of established chemical engineering principles in food industry has rapidly become an important branch of chemical engineering. Challenges faced by engineers and technologists have been in the areas of preserving the original food quality, creating new food structures in large quantities and at high rates. Active ingredients within foods that are good for human consumption must be kept within acceptable limits. Collaborations with food and nutrition scientists and microbiologists, microelectronic engineers etc. are an essential element for success. Studies have been conducted at all scales (from molecular (nano scale), macromolecular, to macroscopic and large scales such as packaged foods). In the area of chemical engineering education, there is an increasing amount of interest in introducing chemical engineering students to food related concepts. Both Australia and New Zealand have very large agri-food businesses. The challenges due to the specific materials (food materials) concerned in R & D have led to many inventions that have great potentials in new food development. In this lecture, the advances made in food engineering research and new technology development will be highlighted.

Humanity is becoming increasingly dependent on technologies. Their rapid development and expansion requires prompt and integrated response of all public institutions and defi nes one of the main challenges facing the law. To overcome them law requires new theoretical and practical solutions that determine the principles and patterns of technology development and impact the effi ciency of law enforcement in conditions of the world’s digital transformation. The article discusses some of the issues and features of development of the Russian law in the context of digital economy development. New approaches to legal regulation and understanding of digital processes are proposed, in particular, in such fi elds as robotics and artifi cial intelligence. While noting the fact that legal regulation of digital relations keeps up with the current level of technological development, the author warns on unreasonable «hyper-regulation». In his opinion in this fi eld of legal regulation priority should be given to measures of encouragement rather than measures of direct regulation of social relations. In conclusion, the author provides justifi cation for a model of «breakthrough» regulation in Russia.

Abstract Background The conflict between the Chinese fossil fuel-based economy and worsening environmental conditions requires further research to be carried out. Due to their clean, highly-efficient and flexible properties, distributed energy systems (DESs) have become a global research focus in the field of energy conservation. China, as the largest coal-fired energy user and highest power consumer in the world, has to conduct further research and apply the DESs to resolve the conflict. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of DES development in China as well as improvement suggestions for the development of DESs by use of scientific analysis. Methods The analysis of strengths-weaknesses-opportunities threats (SWOT) was adapted for the analysis of improvement strategies. The directions for how to improve the application of these strategies were selected by the prioritization method of analytic hierarchy processes (AHP) and evaluated by the best-worst method (BWM). The suggestions were provided according to the ranks figured out by AHP and BWM. Five enablers were selected from the respective economic, environmental, technological and social aspects for participating in this analysis. Results Resulting from the SWOT analysis, capital investment, technology development and regulation completeness are three aspects of strategies summarized as SO strategies, ST strategies, WO strategies and WT strategies. The research perspectives of DESs that are suggested for investment, technology development and regulation completeness are illustrated by AHP and BWM. The results show that the reduction of solid particle emissions, the improvement of generation reliability, the improvement of the production rate, the reduction of production costs, the improvement of on-site safety, the fulfilment of electricity demand, the reduction of noxious gas emissions as well as the improvement of energy efficiency need to be carried out for the sake of environmental protection and quality of DES generation in China. Conclusions There are high potentials for China to further develop and apply DES approaches. The direction of current development might be set to solve three problematic aspects, which are capital investment, technology development and regulation completeness.
