Intelligent agents and multi-agent technologies are an emerging technology in computing and communications that hold much promise for a wide variety of applications in Information Technology. Agent-based systems range from the simple, single agent system performing tasks such as email filtering, to a very complex, distributed system of multiple agents each involved in individual and system wide goal-oriented activity. With the tremendous growth in the Internet and Internet-based computing and the explosion of commercial activity on the Internet in recent years, intelligent agent-based systems are being applied in a wide variety of electronic commerce applications. In order to be able to act autonomously in a market environment, agents must be able to establish and maintain trust relationships. Without trust, commerce will not take place. This research extends previous work in intelligent agents to include a mechanism for handling the trust relationship and shows how agents can be fully used as intermediaries in commerce.

The main purpose of this study is to describe and analyze an agent from a distributed multi-agent based system (ABS) according to the BDI architecture. This agent is capable of autonomous action to propose general technology strategies (TSs) in renewable energy SMEs based on a set of rules and interacts with a core agent in multi ABS. The recognition of internal strengths and weaknesses as well as external opportunities and threats takes place on the basis of technological SWOT-analysis. Proposed TSs are categorized into four types: aggressive strategy, turnaround oriented strategy, diversification strategy, and defensive strategy. Agent architecture in terms of three abstraction layers called psychological, theoretical, and implementation is explained. And after system validation by experts, some program codes and output results of this agent are presented. This system provides information to facilitate the TS planning process to be carried out effectively.

M-commerce, a new way to conduct business, is gaining more and more popularity due to the wide use of the Internet. Despite its rapid growth, there are limitations that hinder the expansion of m-commerce. The primary concern for online shopping is security. Due to the open nature of the Internet, personal financial details necessary for online shopping can be stolen if sufficient security mechanism is not put in place. How to provide the necessary assurance of security to consumers remains a question mark despite various past efforts. Another concern is the lack of intelligence in locating the correct piece of information. The Internet is an ocean of information depository. It is rich in content but lacks the necessary intelligent tools to help one locate the correct piece of information. Intelligent agent, a piece of software that can act intelligently on behalf of its owner, is designed to fill this gap. However, no matter how intelligent an agent is, its functionality is limited if it remains on its owner’s machine and does not have any roaming capability. With the roaming capability, more security concerns arise. In response to these concerns, SAFE, Secure roaming Agent For E-commerce, is designed to provide secure roaming capability to intelligent agents.

Abstract This paper presents a new distributed agent-based scheme to enhance the transient stability of power systems by maintaining phase angle cohesiveness of interconnected generators through proper relay coordination with critical clearing time (CCT) information. In this distributed multi-agent infrastructure, intelligent agents represent various physical device models to provide dynamic information and energy flow among different physical processes of power systems. The agents can communicate with each other in a distributed manner with a final aim to control circuit breakers (CBs) with CCT information as this is the key issue for maintaining and enhancing the transient stability of power systems. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated on a standard IEEE 39-bus New England benchmark system under different large disturbances such as three-phase short-circuit faults and changes in loads within the systems. From the simulation results, it is found that the proposed scheme significantly enhances the transient stability of power systems as compared to a conventional scheme of static CB operation.

It is proposed an agent approach for creation of intelligent intrusion detection system. The system allows detecting known type of attacks and anomalies in user activity and computer system behavior. The system includes different types of intelligent agents. The most important one is user agent based on neural network model of user behavior. Proposed approach is verified by experiments in real intranet of Institute of Physics and Technologies of National Technical University of Ukraine "Kiev Polytechnic Institute.


Internet around the world has become the prime source to satisfy the requirement of Entrepreneurs, customer and end users. As user comfort is the primary goal of all the entrepreneurs, the end user interacts through the internet to mine the knowledge. The user interacts the internet by apps and web. To attract the users, the user interface (UI) designers focus on Visual presentations to abet users to interact, comprehend, and navigate to the information. The work presents that how visual perceptions of Web page intricacy by perceptive users' behavior, the indispensable cognitive effort for interaction with the UI can be understood. The work presents an extension of current methods for designing UI using model-based technics, with the methods essential for the design of adaptive capacities required in different phases of development. These developments can be fused in Agent-Based Ergonomic User Interface Development Environment. This technique is bolstered by a solution based on Multi-Agent System (MAS) which offer adaptive capabilities to users, designed using the anticipated technique of Agent-Based Ergonomic User Interface Development Environment (AB-EUIDE). In [27] author has presented the various phases of the AB-EUIDE Framework. In this article author presents the analysis phase of the AB-EUIDE and explains how a compromise is done between Adaptation and Ergonomics while designing the user interface.

This article proposes a mobile intelligent agentbased e-business architecture that allows buyers and sellers to perform business at remote locations. An e-business participant can generate a mobile, intelligent agent via some mobile devices (such as a personal digital assistant or mobile phone) and dispatch the agent to the Internet to do business on his/her behalf. This proposed architecture promises a number of benefits: First, it provides great convenience for traders as business can be conducted anytime and anywhere. Second, since the task of finding and negotiating with appropriate traders is handled by a mobile, intelligent agent, the user is freed from this time-consuming task. Third, this architecture addresses the problem of limited and expensive connection time for mobile devices: A trader can disconnect a mobile device from its server after generating and launching a mobile intelligent agent. Later on, the trader can reconnect and call back the agent for results, therefore minimizing the connection time. Finally, by complying with the standardization body FIPA, this flexible architecture increases the interoperability between agent systems and provides high scalability design for swiftly moving across the network.

Agent-based e-commerce has been booming with the development of the Internet and agent technologies. However, little effort has been devoted to exploring the learning and evolving capabilities of software agents. This chapter addresses the issues of evolving software agents in e-commerce applications. An agent structure with evolutionary features is proposed with a focus on internal hierarchical knowledge. We argue that the knowledge base of an intelligent agent should be the cornerstone for its evolution capabilities, and the agent can enhance its knowledge base by exchanging knowledge with other agents. In this chapter, product ontology is chosen as an instance of knowledge base. We propose a new approach to facilitate ontology exchange among e-commerce agents. The ontology exchange model and its formalities are elaborated. Product-brokering agents have been designed and implemented, which accomplish the ontology exchange process from request to integration.

The use of intelligent agents is on the rise, fueled by the unprecedented growth in the internet and web based applications. Consequently, agent-oriented software is becoming large and complex. To support a systematic development of such software, an agent-oriented software development methodology is necessary. This chapter focuses on the modeling phase of agent-oriented software life cycle and, presents an approach for agent modeling consisting of Agent Elicitation, Intra, and Inter Agent modeling methods. Agent Elicitation deals with identifying and extracting agents from “classes” in the real world. Intra Agent Modeling involves expressing agent characteristics æ Goal, Belief, Plan and Capability æ whereas, Inter Agent modeling incorporates agent mobility and communication in a multi- agent system.
