Measuring E-Learning System Adoption in Universities in Tanzania

The success of e-learning systems in Tanzania relies on various factors that influence its measurement. Examples of the key factors include trust, environmental factors, and the university readiness. However, influence of these factors towards e-learning systems is not clear. Understanding their impacts and significance helps decision makers and stakeholders in making informed decisions on how to handle them. This study modifies the information systems (IS) success model whereby it adopts 12 factors that had been suggested by this author in his previous study conducted in Open University of Tanzania (OUT) in 2017. A sample of 1,005 students from eight universities in Tanzania was collected. A structural equation modelling was used in data analysis. The results shows trust (T) has positive and significant impact on e-learning actual use (EAU) while environmental factors (EF) had positive and significant impacts on e-learning actual use and perceived benefits, and at the same time, university readiness had a positive and significant impact on perceived benefits (PB).

Bina Darma University (UBD) as one of the university based information technology currently has been assisted by the use of IT in implementing its strategy. University 4.0 is a university that makes students as a learning center and assisted by the use of IT.  UBD in conducting learning has been assisted by e-learning which is one of the benchmarks of 4.0 University perspectives. E-Learning implementation assists the learning process by students and lecturers. The performance of the e-learning system has not been measured. Measurements are performed to improve the quality of e-learning systems in the 4.0 university perspective. To perform analysis used the IT framework Balanced Scorecard consisting of four perspectives namely Corporate Contribution/Business Contribution, User Orientation, Operational Excellence and Future Orientation. The result of this research is an improved analysis of quality and strategies to improve the quality of e-learning systems in the 4.0 university perspective.

Higher institutions are steadily advancing in facilitating teaching and learning on e-learning systems. Google Classroom is a very popular e-learning system that is been adopted by many African universities. Yet, compared to others, relevant studies with regards to Google Classroom is inadequate. This quantitative survey paper examines the predictors of continuous intention to use Google Classroom. Responses from 749 students in three Ghanaian universities were analyzed using both descriptive and Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling techniques. From the findings, Attitude towards Use mediated the impact of Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use on Continuous Intention to Use Google Classroom. Computer literacy courses for adult learners as well as enhanced usability features for visually impaired users has been recommended to relevant stakeholders.

The pandemic of COVID-19 quickly led to the closure of universities and colleges around the world, hoping that the guidance of social distancing from public health authorities will help flatten the curve of infection and minimize the overall fatalities from the epidemic. The e-learning framework, however, is the best solution to enable students to learn about the quality of education. The aim of this research was to examine variables reflecting the actual use of the e-learning system during the COVID-19 pandemic among university students. The perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are positively correlated with facilitating condition, perceived control, and self-efficacy, which in turn influences students’ attitude toward use, which in turn affects the actual use of the e-learning system during the COVID-19 pandemic. To exam the model on the basis of user data from the e-learning system used collected through an online survey, structural equation modeling (SEM) and path analysis were used. The findings showed that the mindset of students to use had positive effects on the learning of students during the COVID-19 pandemic through the actual use of the e-learning system. In the context of e-learning programs in developing countries, previous studies have seldom explored an integrated model. In addition, this article aims to include a literature review of recently published research on the actual use of the e-learning system during the pandemic of COVID-19.

This study evaluates the experiences and perceptions of students regarding e-learning systems and their preparedness for e-learning. It also investigates the overall perceptions of students regarding e-learning and the factors influencing students’ attitudes towards e-learning. The study uses convenience sampling in which students of the Education & Arts and Business Administration colleges were e-mailed the survey. Of the distributed questionnaires, 500 completed were received and analysed. The findings revealed that the majority of the sampled participants used and benefited from the e-learning system. The results also indicated that students underwent an adequate training program provided by the University on the use of e-learning. Furthermore, the results disclosed that participants reasonably received technical support when they used electronic cards on e-learning web portals. In addition, regression analysis found that only recorded lectures help to compensate for the virtual class, manuals, instructions and guidelines published at web portals, and the easiness of e-learning system provided by the University were statistically significant with the positive attitude towards the e-learning system. The findings provided a preliminary framework for future studies on e-learning systems across Saudi universities. The findings also suggest administrators, researchers, decision makers, and policy makers should properly plan, design, implement, and promote e-learning with a clear vision in Saudi Arabia.

<p class="AbstractText">The success and the efficiency of e-Learning should be measured by a reliable method in order to use it effectively. Although, there are several studies about the success of e-Learning systems, only a few of them are about the measurement of this success within the institutions. There is a study of DeLone and McLean (2003) which examines the success of the introduction of e-Learning system with the help of ELSS model (e-Learning System Success).</p><p class="AbstractText">We made two questionnaires to evaluate the application of e-Learning at University of Debrecen, Faculty of Economics and Business. One of them was for the students and the other one asked the lecturers. The aim was to develop such questionnaires which are suitable for both the evaluation of the e-Learning’s quality and its economic benefits.</p><p class="AbstractText">The basis of the e-Learning’s quality questions was Wang’s article (2007), in which he measured the success of the e-Learning systems, therefore the questions of the students’ and the lecturers’ questionnaires were the same.</p><p class="AbstractText">The aim of this survey was to compare the opinions of the students and the teachers regarding the application of e-Learning. The role of the questionnaire for quality development is to give guidance for the University of Debrecen in the e-Learning application.</p>We have used the Mann-Whitney test to evaluate the questionnaires of the students who use the e-Learning system. This method is used to compare the means of two groups in case of ordinal scales or not normally distributed variables. We have also used factor analysis and binominal logistic regression. We have examined whether the background variables manipulating the variables are possible to be developed on the basis of the answers. We used factor analysis to demonstrate this since it contracts the coherent factors into one common factor. Factor analysis is used to compress data and explore data structure. In most cases, factor analysis is used foremost in order to filter out multicollinearity.

<p style="text-align: justify;">During the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, universities were obligated to transform from traditional classroom teaching environments to virtual ones. This sudden transformation highlighted the issue of low e-learning system usage amongst instructors of humanity faculties in Jordan's public universities. This study empirically investigated the moderating impact of technology anxiety on the relationship between the instructor's self-efficacy and the e-learning system's actual use to contribute to solving the problem. A survey was distributed to 468 instructors to test the theoretical framework, which yielded 285 valid and complete instruments analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results showed the positive direct effect of self-efficacy on actual use. Furthermore, the level of technology anxiety moderated the relationship. Instructors with low technology anxiety showed a higher level of e-learning system actual usage than those with a high anxiety level. To improve the use of e-learning systems, top management must understand the fundamental role of compulsory training as the Covid-19 pandemic, and the instructor's confidence must be increased by providing training and support.</p>

Purpose To overcome the spread of the noble coronavirus, the lockdown was imposed on March 25, 2020 by the Government of India which adversely affected the education system in the country and changed the traditional classroom teaching to online teaching. This paper aims to explore the factors encouraging university teachers to use and adopt e-learning systems during the COVID-19 pandemic and to find out the major challenges faced by them in adopting e-learning systems in Odisha, an Indian State. Design/methodology/approach The population of this study was teachers of different universities in Odisha, India. An online questionnaire was administered to collect data from the teachers of the state who were involved in the e-learning system for taking their online classes during the COVID-19 situation. During the study 610 valid responses were processed for data analysis. The results of the analysis were presented through factor analysis, t-test and structural equation model. Findings The findings revealed three major factors as user-friendly, convenient and performance encouraged teachers to use and adopt e-learning systems. The results also identified major challenges such as accessibility to the internet, information and communication technologies literacy and skills and technological support, faced by university teachers in adopting e-learning systems. Research limitations/implications The findings of the study have suggested that the university authorities can develop an effective e-learning system to support their teachers for the continuance of education and learning opportunities. The insights of this study can help the regulatory authorities of higher education to redesign policy and infrastructure for promoting effective e-learning systems. Originality/value Many studies have been conducted in relation to e-learning during COVID-19. However, this is a unique study that identifies supporting factors and addresses the challenges faced by university teachers in adopting an e-learning system.

The primary questions addressed in this paper are the following: what are the factors that affect students’ adoption of an e-learning system and what are the relationships among these factors? This paper investigates and identifies some of the major factors affecting students’ adoption of an e-learning system in a university in Jordan. E-learning adoption is approached from the information systems acceptance point of view. This suggests that a prior condition for learning effectively using e-learning systems is that students must actually use them. Thus, a greater knowledge of the factors that affect IT adoption and their interrelationships is a pre-cursor to a better understanding of student acceptance of e-learning systems. In turn, this will help and guide those who develop, implement, and deliver e-learning systems. In this study, an extended version of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was developed to investigate the underlying factors that influence students’ decisions to use an e-learning system. The TAM was populated using data gathered from a survey of 486 undergraduate students using the Moodle based e-learning system at the Arab Open University. The model was estimated using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). A path model was developed to analyze the relationships between the factors to explain students’ adoption of the e-learning system. Whilst findings support existing literature about prior experience affecting perceptions, they also point to surprising group effects, which may merit future exploration.

The study's primary purpose is to explore the factors affecting the students' intention to use e-learning systems in the COVID pandemic. The model of the “Unified theory of acceptance and use of technology” (UTAUT) was used as a theoretical underpinning. The Independent variables include “performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating condition,” and the dependent variable is the intention to use e-learning systems. The quantitative data were collected from the postgraduate and undergraduate students of the public universities of Lahore. A total of n=411 students were approached, out of which the responses of only 399 were considered valid and were used for Multiple linear regression through SPSS 25. It was a cross-sectional study. It was found that almost all constructs of the model have a significant positive impact on intention to use e-learning systems.  The study's main contribution is exposing the factors that affect the acceptance and use of e-learning systems. This study has several policy implications for policy experts of higher education”.
