This paper seeks to contribute to research work done on applications of information technologies (IT) for solving problems in Africa. This was achieved via a systematic literature review on extant literature on IT use in Africa. Relevant articles with how IT are applied to the work activities of users in Africa are retrieved from various databases and analyzed to reveal the role IT plays in the African user's information journey. The results show that healthcare, agriculture, education, and banking and finance sectors have received considerable attention from researchers. Regarding methodologies adopted, most of the papers used a quantitative approach as compared to qualitative. Considering the limited literature reviews on scholarly technology adoption studies more especially in Africa where people are still yet to appreciate the use and impact of technology in their life, this paper makes significant contributions to the few scholarly studies that have been done in this regard.

The paper concentrates on researching the possibilities of using modern information technologies in animal production in order to monitor and identify behavior and well-being of cows. Having in mind the challenges related to managing dairy herds, and economic pressure put on breeders (as well as the broadly defined well-being of animals), an endeavor was made to create a new method, which would be competitive in comparison with the existing solutions. The proposed method of collecting data and data processing with beacon devices as well as data warehouse, allows—according to the authors—a more complete identification of behaviors and physiological condition of a dairy herd. It is also worth pointing out that this method is competitive in terms of price. By virtue of the multitude of data that were collected, a decision was made to resign from processing data on a local computer and use a cloud compute engine instead. The presented information system creates a sequence of components, which were subject to verification both on the level of creating and conducting research. Research results that were received were then compared with knowledge presented in the literature. A vital element of validation of the aforementioned methodology was comparing results that were achieved in the course of research work with the system making use of pedometer. The aim of the authors was to develop a new information technology solution, as well as a method based on beacons, which are rather universal devices, with the use of data warehouses, allowing the identification of behavior and physiological state of milk cattle, the method which would be competitive in comparison with the existing solutions, especially in terms of price. In the proposed solution, both information coming from microcomputers and weather forecast data coming from weather forecast stations, which make the above identification easy, were used as data sources.

The addition of a photocatalyst to ordinary building materials such as concrete creates environmentally friendly materials by which air pollution or pollution of the surface can be diminished. The use of LiNbO3photocatalyst in concrete material would be more beneficial since it can produce artificial photosynthesis in concrete. In these research photoassisted solid-gas phases reduction of carbon dioxide (artificial photosynthesis) was performed using a photocatalyst, LiNbO3, coated on concrete surface under illumination of UV-visible or sunlight and showed that LiNbO3achieved high conversion of CO2into products despite the low levels of band-gap light available. The high reaction efficiency of LiNbO3is explained by its strong remnant polarization (70 µC/cm2), allowing a longer lifetime of photoinduced carriers as well as an alternative reaction pathway. Due to the ease of usage and good photocatalytic efficiency, the research work done showed its potential application in pollution prevention.

This article presents the results of work done by the research group Science- Spirituality, whose third phase is called The Concept of Natural Harmony in Regards to the Man-nature Relationship: A Dialogue between Western and Eastern Cultures. This phase is an attempt to borrow from emerging Western epistemologies together with Far East traditions,
primarily the ancient Chinese Taoist tradition. Taking as a starting point the contemporary mankind crisis which has been proclaimed by philosophy, science and culture and regarding that which thinkers and scientists alike, such as Husserl and Prigogine have concluded, the limitations of modern-thinking are highlighted and a thorough revision of this thinking has been proposed. This revision must be done based on
the sense of humanity and on the dialogue between sciences and other cultures. In this case: Far Eastern culture.
This research work is built upon the idea of examining our perception concerning Taoist culture, assuming that this culture is reflected in its narratives and fables and that they offer an opportunity to gain new insights and meanings regarding the world and some of the issues faced by contemporary humankind. Thus, the category crisis becomes particularly
important since it is understood as a challenge or opportunity in an increasingly globalized and technology-oriented world marked by problems such as inequality, exclusion, paradoxes and the contradictions of the human being, including himself, others and furthermore a permanent critical relationship to nature from which he or she has been disconnected
in a physical, spiritual and energetic way (Guenon, 2010, 34).

Gene expression programming (GEP) introduced by Candida Ferreira is a descendant of genetic algorithm (GA) and genetic programming (GP). It takes the advantage of both the optimization and search technique based on genetics and natural selection as GA and its programmatic Darwinian counterpart GP. It is gaining popularity because; it has to some extent eradicated the ‘cons' of both while keeping in the ‘pros'. It is still a new technique not much explored since its introduction in 2001. In this chapter both GA and GP is first discussed followed by the elaborate discussion of GEP. This is followed up by the discussion on research work done is different fields using GEP as a tool followed up by GEP architectures. Finally, here GEP has been used for detection of age from facial features as a soft computing based optimization problem using genetic operators.
