Student Learning and Information Technology Nexus

The evidence illustrating enhancement in student learning through information technology (IT) is still questioned in many disciplines, yet education institutions world over are adopting IT with a hope of enhancing the learning effectiveness. Through exhaustive literature review and grounded theory approach this paper investigates the learning – IT nexus in knowledge society and reflects on the use of IT to augment and enhance student learning. It explores what evidence exists to illustrate that IT enhances learning, and how this changes the practice of teaching. The findings indicate that there is a strong nexus between teaching and IT in current scenario. The paper also proposes a framework for augmenting learning through IT which is crucial for the knowledge management and development.

Management education institutions world over are adopting learner centred approaches with a hope to enhance the effectiveness of teaching learning process and also ensure management education fulfils its role of creating leaders who are global players on a sustainable basis. However, the evidence supporting these is tangential. Even the proof illustrating improvement in student learning through use of these approaches is still questioned. Through exhaustive literature review and grounded theory approach this chapter investigates the learner centred approach - teaching nexus and reflects on the use of them to enhance student learning in this globalized knowledge society. The critical review of the learner centred approaches for better understanding to adopt appropriate strategies by management educators is also delved. This is hoped to enhance the value of management education which is vital in this turbulent world and pressures from knowledge driven economies.

Knowledge management is crucial in this knowledge-based society. Further, knowledge is a critical resource when it comes to business competitiveness and sustainability. Hence, to reach the sustainability aims, knowledge management (KM) may be regarded as central for any business organizations. Therefore, adopting an in-depth literature review method with a grounded theory approach, the aim of this chapter is to discuss the role and significance of knowledge management to ensure business growth and sustainability. The chapter also provides a holistic framework of knowledge management for business sustainability.

The immediacy of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the sheer importance of internal and external communication with stakeholders. Universities had to rapidly grasp an unfolding and fast-changing crisis, gauge their level of preparedness, review decision and implementation processes, devise strategies, and adapt communication approaches. This exploratory study conducts a literature review in order to identify relevant studies that address how higher education institutions communicated to their stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The review of the literature revealed that although many higher education institutions had disaster recovery plans in place, few were well-equipped for a disruption of global proportions. Using a grounded theory approach, five important themes emerged from the relevant studies.

ABSTRACT This paper presents the partial results of an ongoing research on the proposal of a methodology for the integration between Knowledge Management (KM) and World Class Manufacturing (WCM). The initial investigation of theoretical and conceptual nature aimed at developing a comprehensive and current vision on KM, WCM, and how (or "whether") these constructs relate to one another. The primary sources for the literature review were Web of Science, Scopus, Emerald, Ebsco, SciELO and Spell, and the time frame was 2000 to 2016. The analysis of the selected papers showed that, although the initial WCM model evolved into a "new WCM" in the 2000s, the literature is still focused on the broad conceptual aspects and basic methods and tools, such as Total Quality Process, Total Productive Maintenance and Just-in-Time, conceived in the Toyota Production System, which shows the need for more studies focused on the current scenario of companies associated with the "new WCM" and its Methods and Tools. Only one article explicitly addressing the interaction between KM theories with WCM was found in the databases surveyed, thus reinforcing the lack of theoretical approximation of these constructs.

In general, organizations should identify the skills, expertise, creativity, and motivation of the people if they have to become more competitive and enhance their performance. This is all the more crucial for public sector organizations. Knowledge therein plays a critical and integral role in being productive and innovative. But, unfortunately, public sector organizations don't recognize and take advantage of the dynamics of knowledge management for developing. Implying expertise and skills of the people in the form of knowledge which they possess is ignored or at best used sporadically. Adopting a grounded theory approach and in-depth literature review, the aim of this chapter is to critically appraise public sector organization development through knowledge management dynamics. The focus is on this neglected area because in this competitive era, public sector organizations' success depends not only on the basis of efficiency and effectiveness but also on how they identify, gather, manage, integrate, share and disseminate relevant knowledge to their human capital to bring innovation.

The authors offer an answer to the research question, To what extent and in what ways is Twitter helpful to student learning when group hashtags are created and used in collaborative educational environments? Sixty-two students in a spring 2012 graduate online Research Methodology course worked individually and in groups to create discussions on topics of interest through Twitter posts and student-created hashtags. Student participants answered nine qualitative and quantitative questions concerning the Twitter/hashtag exercise and used collaborative blog pages to reflect on their experiences. A grounded theory approach was applied to classify data generated from the nine questions and blog postings. An analysis of the study's data resulted in the discovery of the following four themes: access to information, communication, class engagement, and general feedback. Based on these themes, nine recommendations are offered for maximizing the use of Twitter in an online environment for increased student engagement and learning.

Assuming the role of caregiver for a life partner after critical illness can be both a rewarding and challenging experience for spouses. Using a grounded theory approach, Ågård, Egerod, Tønnesen, and Lomborg developed a theoretical model describing the experience from spouse to caregiver and back. To further develop this theoretical model, a literature review was completed and nursing interventions were identified and included in the model. Testing of this theoretical model is recommended to determine its empirical adequacy.

This paper describes a piece of research intended to establish user preferences for the design of virtual worlds for information retrieval, and reflects critically on the methodology adopted. Over 100 students and staff at Robert Gordon University were interviewed, in three cycles of literature review, interview, development and testing. A grounded theory approach was taken, in order to reach conclusions based on user experiences, rather than on the literature. Findings were that preferences appear to be based on affective, rather than structural, criteria, the most influential being familiarity, quality, representation, mediation, etc. The effectiveness of the grounded theory approach in this piece of research is evaluated, with particular regard to the typical criticisms to which such an approach is subject. It is concluded that there is value in the approach, but the limitations of the approach are acknowledged, and strategies to reduce the effect of these are discussed.

Adopting DevOps means increased collaboration between development and operations teams and faster release cycles through a shift to automation. Using Dev Ops brings with it several advantages in the development of software. Security, however, is often neglected in DevOps due to the fast release cycle. Therefore Dev Sec Ops has emerged as an extension to DevOps that attempts to integrate security with Dev Ops practices, which is not without its challenges. DevOps, and by extension Dev Sec Ops, represents a significant change in the culture, tooling, and processes used in software development. Therefore, when implementing DevSecOps, teams and their organizations need to be aware of the challenges it brings and how to address those challenges for a DevSecOps implementation to be effective. Literature on DevSecOps exists that outlines practices and principles to do this. This paper uses a grounded theory approach to do a systematic literature review of academic literature to find the factors that contribute to an effective DevSecOps implementation. It attempts to reconcile the challenges of DevSecOps with ways of mitigating them and the advantages that a DevSecOps implementation can bring. The paper thus outlines methods of effectively implementing DevSecOps as described in academic literature.

With the coming of the digital age over a period of the last three decades, the letter “e” is used to refer to the electronic world. Formerly known as computer-based training, e-learning has also come of age and is increasingly oriented to real-time learning, that is, activities facilitating simultaneous interaction between learners and instructors. Further, the knowledge explosion makes it more a necessity than a luxury even for emerging economies to consider the e-learning platforms and adopt e-learning strategies. The objectives of this chapter are to understand the essentials of effective e-learning strategies and identify the barriers and facilitators in embedding e-learning for emerging economies so as to align well in this knowledge era. The methodology adopted is in depth literature review and grounded theory approach. Contextual analysis and is restricted to effectiveness of e-learning from an emerging economy point of view.
