This case study explores the experiences of three American pre-service teachers participating in an international applied learning context in Belize. The pre-service teachers worked in San Pedro Town, Belize for a month with local teachers and children in primary grades. The applied learning context was a demonstration classroom located in the center of the city where local teachers and children would visit each day. The pre-service teachers were responsible for creating lessons and activities, then teaching the children in the demonstration classroom while the Belizean teachers observed. The pre-service teachers also provided professional development for the teachers in the teacher's classroom. Through this international applied learning experience, the pre-service teachers strengthened their teaching and leadership skills while exploring their cultural sensitivity living in a new culture and country. The lessons through international applied learning contexts can greatly influence pre-service teachers' teaching practices when they have their own classroom.

A well-lit learning space is crucial to ensure the comfort of its occupants, especially for an architecture student who spends long hours in a studio to design, sketch, draw and build prototypes. This paper presents the results from a study conducted on the illuminance level of the architecture studios in the city campus of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Malaysia that were once laboratories. Measurements had been done using the Lux meter. Illuminance contours were generated using SigmaPlot and Dialux software for all the five rooms and compared with the requirements stipulated in the Malaysian Standard, Australia/New Zealand Standard and Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) standard for a room with similar function. A survey was also conducted among undergraduate architecture students who were using the studios daily to gauge their perception on the lighting condition and comfort level. The outcome of this study can be considered for future architecture studio lighting design to improve the students’ learning experience.

AbstractThe fostering of learner autonomy has become an essential element of modern pedagogy and an established object of research. There are many difficulties in providing evidence of learners’ development towards autonomy, however, since it is not measurable in a traditional sense. As a learning advisor (LA) at a private language university in Japan, I have worked closely with individual language learners who take our module designed to foster learner autonomy via the practice of self-directed language learning (SDLL). This article uses a case study of one particular learner’s SDLL experience to introduce an approach to documenting the development of learner autonomy that draws on document analysis and narrative inquiry. I first introduce a SDLL assessment rubric that allowed me to classify and analyze three kinds of data: narrative accounts of the learner’s seven-week learning journal, recordings of three advising sessions with an LA, and the learner’s final report. With reference to her achievement of the learning outcomes in the assessment rubric, I then portray the learner’s development of awareness and her response to her enhanced awareness in her particular learning context.

Video-based learning is widely adopted by online learners, yet, learning experience and quality may be negatively affected by asynchronous and remote natures of video-based learning. As note-taking is a common practice employed by video-based learners and is known to be an effective way to trigger active construction and processing of knowledge, yet as a meta-skill, it is challenging to most learners. In this study, we aim to approach the goal of providing cognitive and social scaffolds to video-based learners by structuring their note-taking process. We presented and evaluated structured note-taking systems designed for learners in two contexts, namely, individual learning context and social learning context. With an online controlled study involving 43 participants, we compared the structured note-taking systems with two baseline systems (for individual learning and social learning contexts respectively) and found that structured note-taking significantly improved certain aspects of video-based learning such as and higher cognitive engagement and lower distraction. We discussed our results to inform the design, iteration, and adoption of note-taking tools in video-based learning.

Case studiesandrole-playsare examples of active collaborative teachingtechniques. Online collaborative learning encourages students to learn together in teams using Internet communication technologies. However, online collaborative learning space is not only encouraging but also challenging for both instructors and students. In this article, the authors investigated the application of an online case study method that involves role-play approach (RP/CS) in solving the cases. Due to the shift to online education during the last two years in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, this research study explored the application of online RP/CS in the development of students’ leadership skills, which are of significance for all professions. The purpose of this research study is to investigate if/how the instructors use RP/CS tools in order to aid students in their leadership skills development and how students perceive the application of RP/CS activities introduced in online courses. Course instructors across the West Ukrainian National University were surveyed to identify the courses where the instructors used online RP/CS activities. The focus was on the application of RP/CS in teaching leadership skills. Nine course instructors were interviewed to identify the features around the courses and the use of RP/CS (the aim of the course, the purpose of using RP/CS, and the expected outcomes). 22 second-year students who participated in online RP/CS activities were surveyed online. Seven students were interviewed online. The research purpose was to explore students’ perceived learning, participation, and satisfaction. According to the analysis of students’ surveys and interviews, the participants were satisfied with their online learning experience and felt increased motivation and interest in RP/CS. Thus, the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and other current challenges should not negatively affect the educational process in universities. The creation of a new educational space for interactive learning and the use of active collaborative methods online are of particular significance.Key words: online education, case study method, role play, leadership skills, collaborative learning.

Service-learning is a form of experiential education that connects classroom instruction with community service for the benefits of the partners involved. While the effects of service-learning on college students are well documented in Western settings, considerably less is known about these effects in Eastern contexts. Given the current profound political changes in Egypt and the greater Arab world, this research utilized a case study design to explore the potential of service-learning for developing civic awareness among college students at a university in Northern Egypt. Findings revealed that participation in service-learning allowed students valuable opportunities to connect with others from backgrounds different from their own. Through their work in the community, students gained important civic skills, including thinking critically and addressing public problems, developing perspective-taking positions, and enhancing coping capabilities. The study outcomes suggest a cultural shift in Egypt that validates young adults as a productive segment of population thus affording them structured opportunities for civic engagement through which they could exercise their leadership skills and effect positive change in their communities. The ongoing critical engagement of students in their communities where they grapple with questions about the structural causes of inequalities in society is pivotal for service-learning to be a truly empowering learning experience.

As destination of choice for many short-term study abroad programs, Berlin offers students of German language, culture and history a number of sites richly layered with significance. The complexities of these sites and the competing narratives that surround them are difficult for students to grasp in a condensed period of time. Using approaches from the spatial humanities, this article offers a case study for enhancing student learning through the creation of digital maps and itineraries in a campus-based course for subsequent use during a three-week program in Berlin. In particular, the concept of deep mapping is discussed as a means of augmenting understanding of the city and its history from a narrative across time to a narrative across the physical space of the city. As itineraries, these course-based projects were replicated on site. In moving from the digital environment to the urban landscape, this article concludes by noting meanings uncovered and narratives formed as we moved through the physical space of the city.

Abstract Amendment to the Act on special rules of preparation and implementation of investment in public roads resulted in an accelerated mode of acquisition of land for the development of roads. The decision to authorize the execution of road investment issued on its basis has several effects, i.e. determines the location of a road, approves surveying division, approves construction design and also results in acquisition of a real property by virtue of law by the State Treasury or local government unit, among others. The conducted study revealed that over 3 years, in this mode, the city of Krakow has acquired 31 hectares of land intended for the implementation of road investments. Compensation is determined in separate proceedings based on an appraisal study estimating property value, often at a distant time after the loss of land by the owner. One reason for the lengthy compensation proceedings is challenging the proposed amount of compensation, unregulated legal status of the property as well as imprecise legislation. It is important to properly develop geodetic and legal documentation which accompanies the application for issuance of the decision and is also used in compensation proceedings.
