Globally, both wired and wireless technologies have been used for healthcare delivery. However, in the frenzy to secure the best solutions and applications, few have delved deeper into the key issues of how to successfully assimilate these new technologies into the whole healthcare delivery process. The authors focus on wireless healthcare solutions, specifically examining a single exemplar case study, the diamond solution that describes a pervasive technology solution of a diabetes monitoring device. They contend that a key barrier for preventing the full realization of the true potential of wireless solutions lies in the inability of information and necessary data to pass seamlessly from one platform to another. In addition, the authors suggest ways to integrate data from wireless healthcare solutions with the existing electronic health records (EHR) systems, and discuss the impact of wireless enabled solutions on the meaningful use of EHRS.

The Impact

The hospitality and tourism sector is one of fastest growing sectors in Australia and in the world. In order to become more efficient and effective in delivering products and services to customers via the use of ICT, hospitality and tourism organizations have to rethink the ways in which they build relationships with their customers by initiating electronic customer relationship management (eCRM) projects. Inappropriate eCRM decision-making and implementation can result in multi-million dollar losses, which can translate into a loss of competitiveness. Therefore, the case study approach was conducted to: (1) identify potential ICT costs and risk factors involved in eCRM initiatives in general; and (2) identify and examine key issues in the implementation of eCRM in the Australian hospitality and tourism sector. The contribution of this book chapter is two-fold. First, it offers hospitality and tourism executives with a more realistic insight about the impact of their eCRM investments on their business. Second, potential key issues, costs and risk factors associated with eCRM implementation are presented to assist these organizations in dealing with these challenges.

In an environment of escalating healthcare costs, chronic disease management is particularly challenging, since, by definition such diseases have no foreseeable cure and if poorly managed typically lead to further, complicated secondary health issues, which ultimately only serve to exacerbate cost. Diabetes is one of the leading chronic diseases and its prevalence continues to rise exponentially. Thus it behooves all to focus on solutions that can result in superior management of this disease. Hence, this article presents findings from a longitudinal exploratory case study that examined the application of a pervasive technology solution; a mobile phone, to provide superior diabetes self-care. Notably, the benefits of a pervasive technology solution for supporting superior self-care in the context of chronic disease are made especially apparent when viewed through the rich lens of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and thus the paper underscores the importance of using ANT in such contexts to facilitate a deeper understanding of all potential advantages.

The WHO has labelled diabetes the silent epidemic. This is because the instances of diabetes worldwide continue to grow exponentially. In fact, by 2030 it is expected that there will be a 54% global increase. Thus, it behooves all to focus on solutions that can result in superior management of this disease. Hence, this chapter presents findings from a longitudinal exploratory case study that examined the application of a pervasive technology solution, a mobile phone to provide superior diabetes self-care. Notably, the benefits of a pervasive technology solution for supporting superior self-care in the context of chronic disease are made especially apparent when viewed through the rich lens of Actor-Network Theory (ANT), and thus, the chapter underscores the importance of using ANT in such contexts to facilitate a deeper understanding of all potential advantages.

The tertiary education sector in New Zealand is changing, with more and more emphasis being placed upon outcomes and the relationship that universities have with their stake-holders. There is a danger that the complexities of change may over-shadow some key issues in the transformation. This article highlights the importance of one of the keys to accomplishing a meaningful relationship with the stakeholders – the development of teaching strategies that ensure transfer of learning occurs. In the paper, the issue of assessment of strategic decisions in the company is approached, while indicating their impact on the implementation of modern technological solutions and the methods for their financing. The study is divided into two basic parts, namely theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part, the essence of the strategy of the company is depicted, taking into account the impact of strategic decisions on the changes in the adopted strategy of the enterprise based on the literature studies. The considerations presented in the empirical part include the results of the research conducted in the multinational chemical company. The objective of the study is to learn and assess the relationships between the implementation of modern technological solutions and the effectiveness of strategic decisions on the methods for their financing. The research methods applied to accomplish the objective are literature studies, a case study and the following techniques related to analysis are used: the analysis of return on investment, and the analysis of financial leverage effect. The issue of assessment of strategic decisions is important and up-to-date due to its impact on the continuity of business operations and maintaining a competitive advantage on the market. This study is an attempt to fill the observed research gap regarding the relationships between the implementation of modern technological solutions and the effectiveness of strategic decisions on the methods for their financing.

Traffic congestion at peak times has long been a problem facing cities in the United Kingdom.1 Latterly concern about combating congestion has been hightened by worries over carbon emissions and poor air quality. In tackling these problems, green innovations incorporating new technologies appear to have much to offer, although progress in implementing these sorts of innovation appears to have been slow. This case study analyses the efforts of one city to tackle these problems by pioneering a number of green innovations including the introduction of a light rail system employing trams known as Nottingham Express Transit as well as electric and gas-powered buses. The nature of these innovations is explored together with a detailed examination of how they came to be implemented and the impact they have had.

3D printers and robots (3DPR) are new technologies that may disrupt traditional supply chains.The location of the manufacturing place can be moved toward more customer side in the supply chain, which brings both agility and the ability of customization.The impact is yet to be examined quantitatively. In this paper we study the location of 3DPR in the supply chain. We present and compare three models of supply chains: Traditional supply chain; 3DPR at warehouse; 3DPR at shop. The semodels are compared by the equipment installation cost, the production cost,and inventory cost for safety-stock. The study presents a practical case study motivated from a real-world apparel company, discusses the three models under various parameter settings, comparing the obtained total cost and discovers the advantages and disadvantages.

The increasing incorporation of new technologies in the education system demands a deep revision in the management processes of the training centers, improving their presence in social networks. The qualitative research presented in this article presents a case study carried out at the Training Center of Teachers and Educational Innovation of Avila (Spain) and pursues two objectives: the first consists in value the usefulness of different strategies to boost and disseminate the training courses through Twitter, while the second seeks to analyze the impact that such dissemination has been on the participation of teachers. The results show that the innovations introduced in the dynamization have aroused the interest of the teachers, increasing the interactions made in the social network and producing a remarkable rise of their participation in the courses.
