The Influence of Social Networks on the U.S. Senate Roll-Call Voting

Along with individuals’ ideological factors, various network properties play a crucial role in the process of legislators’ political decision making. Social networks among legislators provide relational resources through which communication occurs, exerting social influence among the members in a network. This paper examines six social relationships among the members of the 109th United States Senate as predictors of senatorial voting (roll call votes), shared committees, co-sponsorships, party membership, PAC donation, geographical contiguity, and internet hyperlinks, which may be considered as direct or indirect representations of communication networks. The six networks are modeled using MRQAP, and results suggest that roll call voting was predicted by party membership, co-sponsorship, geographical proximity, and PAC donation networks, while shared committee membership did not contribute significantly. As for hyperlinks, results were mixed, showing a small variance of contribution in a simpler model but not significant with more complex models.

Spatial theory is divided between models of elections and models of roll call voting, neither of which alone can explain congressional polarization. This chapter discusses the history of spatial theory, why it is important to link the two strands of spatial models, and the value of reversing the order of conventional models. Conventional models place an election before policy decisions are made. This chapter proposes a unified spatial model of Congress in which the conventional order is reversed. First, there is a legislative session, then an election in which voters respond retrospectively, not to the locations candidates claim to hold, but to the bundles of roll call votes that incumbents cast to incrementally adopt their locations in the policy space. Such a model is best suited to explaining three puzzles: why do legislators adopt extreme positions, how do they win, and what role do parties play in the process?

  As jornadas de junho se constituíram como um movimento de insurgência disposto sobre o Brasil no período de junho de 2013, com base nas iniciativas do MPL em protesto contra a tarifa do transporte público em São Paulo, mas cujo escopo se ampliou e abarcou uma série de demandas sociais cuja origem é o âmago da sociedade brasileira na extensão e nas particularidades do território nacional. Na dinâmica dos atos, redes de comunicação alternativa e autônoma foram instrumentos de movimentação, informação e coesão das manifestações, por meio de dispositivos e redes sociais. A proposta deste estudo foi refletir as dinâmicas das Jornadas de Junho, considerando a dimensão do ciberespaço como elemento aglutinador de práticas socioespaciais e de insurgência, na busca de uma aproximação entre Geografia e ciberespaço no contexto do exame do caso em questão. This paper aims to show that the marketing and management of advertising campaigns have contributed in a positive and growing way since the nineties until now bring in targeted customers and increase sales of electronic products. Social communication networks are transformed into the promoting and marketing advertising forum in order to automatically attract customers without the need for traditional sales methods. In this sense, electronic marketing represents the space of commercial transactions of the future. Therefore, this type of marketing and the management of campaigns promoting social media via social networks have a direct impact on internet users by the effect of electronic advertising.

Social networks mediate the spread of information and disease. The dynamics of spreading depends, among other factors, on the distribution of times between successive contacts in the network. Heavy-tailed (bursty) time distributions are characteristic of human communication networks, including face-to-face contacts and electronic communication via mobile phone calls, email, and internet communities. Burstiness has been cited as a possible cause for slow spreading in these networks relative to a randomized reference network. However, it is not known whether burstiness is an epiphenomenon of human-specific patterns of communication. Moreover, theory predicts that fast, bursty communication networks should also exist. Here, we present a high-throughput technology for automated monitoring of social interactions of individual honeybees and the analysis of a rich and detailed dataset consisting of more than 1.2 million interactions in five honeybee colonies. We find that bees, like humans, also interact in bursts but that spreading is significantly faster than in a randomized reference network and remains so even after an experimental demographic perturbation. Thus, while burstiness may be an intrinsic property of social interactions, it does not always inhibit spreading in real-world communication networks. We anticipate that these results will inform future models of large-scale social organization and information and disease transmission, and may impact health management of threatened honeybee populations.

Graphs appear in several settings, like social networks, recommendation systems, computer communication networks, gene/protein biological networks, among others. A large amount of graph patterns, as well as graph generator models that mimic such patterns have been proposed over the last years. However, a deep and recurring question still remains: “What is a good pattern?” The answer is related to finding a pattern or a tool able to help distinguishing between actual real-world and fake graphs. Here we explore the ability of ShatterPlots, a simple and powerful algorithm to tease out patterns of real graphs, helping us to spot fake/masked graphs. The idea is to force a graph to reach a critical (“Shattering”) point, randomly deleting edges, and study its properties at that point.
