With the constraints on manufacturing capacity, the satisfaction of product performance and the cost of manufacture are contradictory, the problem between high-performance and low-cost must be solved at the period of design and manufacture for product. To solve this problem, the product loss model has been analyzed, the parameterized and non-parameterized model of anticipant losses has been researched, with concurrent design, in connection with the product with multiple correlated assembly functional dimensions, the relation function between quality loss and process dimension tolerance has been provided, the concurrent tolerance design mathematical model based on lowest-cost and quality loss has been established. The applied case shows that this method has important guiding significance for engineering application.

The quality loss function incorporates the cost of tolerances, however, it does not consider the manufacturing cost and design constraints. In this paper, a stochastic integer programming (SIP) approach is presented for simultaneous selection of tolerances and manufacturing processes. A direct link between the minimum manufacturing cost and the required level of manufacturing yield is established through the process capability index Cpk. As the tolerances in SIP are discrete, the solution generated is acceptable for manufacturing. It is shown that the integer programming models are applicable in the quality loss function and six sigma design approaches. The SIP approach is illustrated with a classical example of nonlinear tolerance design. The comparison of the proposed SIP approach, the Taguchi method, and the conventional mathematical models in tolerance synthesis is presented.

AbstractA more systematic marketing research approach has finally revealed good ideas anticipating a market need for the use of shape memory alloys. The success of those new ideas, prototypes and applications are analysed in terms of “the value of the function”, defined as the importance of the function divided by the cost of providing the function. A high importance and/or a low cost of the function are thus the basic requirements for the successful introduction of shape memory applications. Attention is also paid to the way how the 4 P's, product, price, place, promotion (the marketing mix) are applied by the European companies. Those different items will be illustrated on the basis of some small-, medium- and largescale applications, used in different markets. “to the point research”, fundamental and applied, on material properties as well as on manufacturing (cost reduction) is being discussed as the key factor to increase the function value.

Current high-end graphics processing units (abbreviate to GPUs), such as NVIDIA Tesla, Fermi, Kepler series cards which contain up to thousand cores per-chip, are widely used in the high performance computing fields. These GPU cards (called desktop GPUs) should be installed in personal computers/servers with desktop CPUs; moreover, the cost and power consumption of constructing a high performance computing platform with these desktop CPUs and GPUs are high. NVIDIA releases Tegra K1, called Jetson TK1, which contains 4 ARM Cortex-A15 CPUs and 192 CUDA cores (Kepler GPU) and is an embedded board with low cost, low power consumption and high applicability advantages for embedded applications. NVIDIA Jetson TK1 becomes a new research direction. Hence, in this paper, a bioinformatics platform was constructed based on NVIDIA Jetson TK1. ClustalWtk and MCCtk tools for sequence alignment and compound comparison were designed on this platform, respectively. Moreover, the web and mobile services for these two tools with user friendly interfaces also were provided. The experimental results showed that the cost-performance ratio by NVIDIA Jetson TK1 is higher than that by Intel XEON E5-2650 CPU and NVIDIA Tesla K20m GPU card.

Abstract Tolerance design bridges design and manufacturing. Concurrent design of tolerances and manufacturing processes may ensure the manufacturability, reduce the manufacturing and other related costs, decrease the number of fraction nonconforming (or defective rate), and shorten the production lead time. Since process capability indices relate tolerance specifications to manufacturing process capabilities, it is quite natural to apply them to concurrent design of tolerances and processes. As process shifts often exist in a manufacturing process, using Cp does not yield a good estimation of fraction nonconforming. Index Cpk does not precisely measure process shift either, but Cpm does. Therefore, this research compares the applications of Cp, Cpk and Cpm based on a numerical example of non-linear mechanical tolerance synthesis. In addition, the Taguchi quality loss function is used together with the manufacturing cost as the objective function.

The range of commercial titanium alloys available is currently extremely restricted, with one alloy (Ti-6Al-4V), and derivatives of it, accounting for a very large proportion of all applications. High performance alloys are costly to fabricate and limited to low-volume applications that can sustain the cost. With the emergence of new processing technologies that promise to reduce significantly the cost of production of titanium metal, especially in powder form, there is an emerging imperative for cost-effective near net shape powder processing techniques to permit the benefit of reduced metal cost to be passed on to higher-volume applications. Equally, there is a need for the design and development of new alloys that are intrinsically low-cost and lend themselves to fabrication by novel cost-effective net shape processing. The approaches that might be used to select, design and process both conventional alloys and novel alloy systems will be reviewed, with a focus on innovation in design of low-cost alloys amenable to new processing paths and increasingly tolerant of variability in composition.

Summary The interest in Canada in the design and manufacture of utility aircraft with a short take-off and landing (STOL) performance may be traced back to the difficulties of surface transport in the early development of the country and the widespread use of bush aircraft. The leading characteristics of the STOL aircraft are examined with particular reference to design features essential to a short take-off and landing. The choice of powerplants and lifting systems is discussed with emphasis on the requirements for powered lift in the larger sizes of aircraft. The augmentor-wing is described as an example of an integrated propulsion lifting system with promise of a high performance. The phases of the take-off, transition, climb and landing manoeuvre are reviewed to illustrate the relative importance of various parameters in design and operation. The importance is stressed of good stability characteristics and effective controls for manoeuvring in a confined air space and a consistent landing performance. The requirements of a para-military mobile force tor a rapid response, deployment overseas and transportation in an area are examined. Some estimates are given of the probability of finding suitable airstrips in a particular region and the cost of constructing new airfields in a dynamic situation. The operating environment in potentially troubled areas of the world is examined briefly to provide guidance in design. The costs of a military supply system are discussed using various modes of transport which include trucks, helicopters, STOL and conventional transport aircraft with results which suggest that the system employing STOL aircraft in the tactical theatre has advantages in cost and effectiveness. Attention is drawn to the growing requirement for shorthaul, commuter and air taxi aircraft with STOL characteristics. Reference is made to the increases in air travel and the widespread use of large transport aircraft which have encouraged the movement of airports from urban centres at a time when city growth and congestion render surface transport increasingly difficult. The relative costs of commercial systems using the helicopter and STOL aircraft are examined. It is shown that the cost of STOL ports is not an excessive portion of total system costs when all factors are taken into account. Some forecasts are made as to future development trends in transport systems using STOL aircraft.

A new type of retaining wall, the self-balance retaining wall, is introduced in this paper. Based on the stress analysis, the calculation model and method are advanced about the retaining wall. A comparative analysis related to traditional retaining wall is carried out on stress and cost combining with an actual project. The results show that the idea of using upper gravity retaining wall as the resistance of lower retaining wall is clever and reasonable that the self-balance retaining wall has a very wide scope of application relying on the anchor tensile conditions rarely and that the self-balance retaining wall has a great economic value with low cost. The cost of the self-balance retaining wall is 50% compared with the cantilever pile retaining wall under the same conditions which has a good economic effect and application prospect.
