To increase the molecular weight of poly (phenylene sulfide ether) (PPSE), a novel route has been developed via the reduction of poly (phenylene sulfoxide ether sulfide ether) (PPSOESE) precursor. The synthesis of high molecular weight PPSOESE is essential for the ultimate purpose. Effects of process parameters on preparation of PPSOESE were firstly investigated and the optimization was performed by response surface methodology (RSM). Average number molecular weight (Mn) and Yield of PPSOESE were defined as the experimental responses. The statistical analyses indicate that the most significant factor is monomer concentration, followed by reaction temperature and the interaction of reaction temperature • monomer concentration. Under optimal conditions, the and Yield responses were obtained as 1.78 ×104±1.02 % and 93.6±1.3 %, which are in agreement with the predicted values of 1.80 ×104and 95.4 %, respectively. Structure of PPSOESE was also characterized. The highest intrinsic viscosity and yield of PPSE by the reduction of PPSOESE reached to 0.78 dL/g and 93.2%, respectively, much greater than the reported results. The work is helpful for forthcoming preparation and study of high molecular weight PPSE.

Abstract The waste pomelo peel was pyrolyzed at 400 °C to prepare biochar and used as adsorbent to remove norfloxacin (NOR) from simulated wastewater. The adsorption conditions of norfloxacin by biochar were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). On the basis of single-factor experiment, the adsorption conditions of biochar dosage, solution pH and reaction temperature were optimized by Box-Behnken Design (BBD), and the quadratic polynomial regression model of response value Y1 (NOR removal efficiency) and Y2 (NOR adsorption capacity) were obtained respectively. The results show that the two models are reasonable and reliable. The influence of single factor was as follows: solution pH > biochar dosage > reaction temperature. The interaction between biochar dosage and solution pH was very significant. The optimal adsorption conditions after optimization were as follows: biochar dosage = 0.5 g/L, solution pH = 3, and reaction temperature = 45 °C. The Y1 and Y2 obtained in the verification experiment were 75.68% and 3.0272 mg/g, respectively, which were only 2.38% and 0.0242 mg/g different from the theoretical predicted values of the model. Therefore, the theoretical model constructed by response surface methodology can be used to optimize the adsorption conditions of norfloxacin in water.

Pure powdery high molecular weight polyacrylonitrile (HMW-PAN) copolymers were firstly synthesized by aqueous deposited polymerization (ADP) technique employing 2,2'-Azobis (isobutyramidine) dihydrochloride (AIBA) as initiator and itaconic acid (IA) as comonomer. Various PAN polymers were obtained through changing different polymerization parameters. It is indicated that with the increase of total monomer concentration, initiator concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time, polymerization conversions of PAN copolymers all increased. While the molecular weights become greater with the increase of total monomer concentration. With the increase of initiator concentration and reaction temperature (under higher reaction temperature region), the molecular weights decreased. However, the molecular weights only had very little decrease at the end of long extension of reaction time.

Incorporation of nanocellulose could improve wear resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for an artificial joint application. Yet, the extremely high melt viscosity of the polymer may constrict the mixing, leading to fillers agglomeration and poor mechanical properties. This study optimized the processing condition of UHMWPE/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) bionanocomposite fabrication in triple screw kneading extruder by using response surface methodology (RSM). The effect of the process parameters—temperature (150–190 °C), rotational speed (30–60 rpm), and mixing time (30–45 min)—on mechanical properties of the bionanocomposites was investigated. Homogenous filler distribution, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis, was obtained through the optimal processing condition of 150 °C, 60 rpm, and 45 min. The UHMWPE/CNF bionanocomposites exhibited improved mechanical properties in terms of Young’s and flexural modulus by 11% and 19%, respectively, as compared to neat UHMWPE. An insignificant effect was observed when maleic anhydride-grafted-polyethylene (MAPE) was added as compatibilizer. The obtained results proved that homogenous compounding of high melt viscosity UHMWPE with CNF was feasible by optimizing the melt blending processing condition in triple screw kneading extruder, which resulted in improved stiffness, a contributing factor for wear resistance.

The response surface methodology was employed to optimize the synthesis conditions of seleno-Sargassum fusiforme(Harv.) Setch. polysaccharide. Three independent variables (reaction time, reaction temperature, and ratio of Na2SeO3to SFPSI) were tested. Furthermore, the characterization and antioxidant activity of Se-SFPSIin vivowere investigated. The result showed that the actual experimental Se content of Se-SFPSI was 3.352 mg/g at the optimum reaction conditions of reaction time 8 h, reaction temperature 71°C, and ratio of Na2SeO3to SFPSIB 1.0 g/g. A series of experiments showed that the characterization of Se-SFPSIB was significantly different from that of SFPSIB. Additionally, antioxidant activity assay indicated that the Se-SFPSIB could increase catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity of mice bearing tumor S180in blood, heart, and liver while decreasing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. It can be concluded that selenylation is a feasible approach to obtain seleno-polysaccharide which was utilized as highly biological medicine or functional food.

The Aim of this study was to develop an optimized method for manufacturing process of traditional Algerian Jben cheese, using response surface methodology (RSM). In order to develop the objective method of making this traditional cheese, several factors have been studied and a Plackett-Burman statistical design was applied. The effects of the four screened factors (enrichment with milk powder, 10 - 20 g/l; pH of milk, 5.75 - 6.75, enzymatic extract dose, 0.5 - 1.5 ml and coagulation temperature 40 - 60 °C) on the response were investigated, using a Box-Behnken statistical design. Multiple regression analysis was used so that experimental data fits to a second-order polynomial equation. This multiple analysis showed that the model explains about 90.73% of the variation. Based on statistical results, it can be noticed that enrichment with milk powder and pH of milk (Ë‚0.0001***) were highly significant factor influincing cheese yield. The optimal production parame-ters that maximized cheese product (20 g/l enrichment with milk powder, 5.75 pH of milk, 1.29 ml enzymatic extract dose and 60°C coagulation temperature) and the maximal predicted cheese yield (52.68 % ) were found out through response surface methodology. Under these conditions, a verification experiment was carried out and cheese yield was found to be 49.46 %. The overall percentage of agreement for the experimental results (more than 93 % validity) with the predicted values indicates the validation of the statistical model and the success of the optimization process.

This current study focuses on the modelling and optimization of supercritical fluid extraction of Quercus infectoria galls oil. In this case, response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) were applied for the modelling and prediction of extraction yield of galls oil. A 17-run Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was employed to statistically optimize the process parameters of SC-CO2 extraction of Quercus infectoria galls at a condition as follows: pressure (5000, 6000, 7000 Psi), temperature (40, 50, 60°C) and extraction time (30, 45, 60 min). The maximum yield of the extracted oil is1.12 % and the optimum conditions are at an extraction pressure of 5574 Psi; extraction temperature of 75°C and extraction time of 54 min. Under the optimal conditions, the experimental results agree with the predicted values obtained through analysis of variance (ANOVA). This indicates a successful response surface methodology and highly satisfactory goodness of fit of the model used. The analysis of experimental design for process optimization results demonstrates that temperature and extraction time are the main parameters that influence the oil extraction of Quercus infectoria.

Abstract Waste generated from industrial processing of seafood is an enormous source of commercially valuable proteins. One among the underutilized seafood waste is shrimp waste, which primarily consists of head and carapace. Litopenaeus vannamei (L. vannamei) is the widely cultivated shrimp in Asia and contributes to 90 % of aggregate shrimp production in the world. This work was focused on extraction as well as purification of value-added proteins from L. vannamei waste in a single step aqueous two phase system (ATPS). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and trisodium citrate system were chosen for the ATPS owing to their adequate partitioning and less toxic nature. Response surface methodology (RSM) was implemented for the optimization of independent process variables such as PEG molecular weight (2000 to 6000), pH (6 to 8) and temperature (25 to 45 °C). The results obtained from RSM were further validated using a Multi-objective genetic algorithm (MGA). At the optimized condition of PEG molecular weight 2000, pH 8 and temperature 35 °C, maximum partition coefficient and protein yield were found to be 2.79 and 92.37 %, respectively. Thus, L. vannamei waste was proved to be rich in proteins, which could be processed industrially through cost-effective non-polluting ATPS extraction, and RSM coupled MGA could be a potential tool for such process optimization.
