Zeolite A has been synthesized by a modified alkali fusion followed hydrothermal process. Hydrothermal was performed at a temperature of 90 °C for 4 h in a stainless steel reactor. Characterization of the synthesized zeolite was conducted using various techniques, i.e. X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and measurement of cation exchange capacity (CEC). The characterization results showed that zeolite A was selectively obtained by this method. The diffract gram, SEM image, and IR spectra of the synthesized zeolite A showed a similarity with the commercially available zeolit A.

In this work, the CuInS2 nanoparticles are successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted heating technique and further calcined at 400 °C. The morphological, structural, and optical properties of the synthesized CuInS2 nanoparticles are investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering, and transmittance measurement, respectively. The SEM image shows the clear particle shape of the calcined CuInS2 nanoparticles. After calcination treatment, the fundamental (112) peak of the XRD spectrum and a broad Raman peak mixed with chalcopyrite and CuAu structures support the improved crystallinity of the calcined CuInS2 nanoparticles.

AbstractA new tin(II) borate with the composition SnB8O11(OH)4 was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. It crystallizes in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P21/n (no. 14) with the lattice parameters a=790.1(1), b=1402.2(2), c=994.8(1) pm, and β=90.40(5)° (Z=4). The new compound SnB8O11(OH)4 is isotypic to PbB8O11(OH)4 and isostructural to BaB8O11(OH)4. The borate layers are built up from fundamental building blocks (FBBs) with the composition [B8O11(OH)4]2−. Four of these FBBs form a nine-membered ring wherein the Sn2+ cations are located. These boron-oxygen layers are further connected by O–H···O hydrogen bond interactions. The characterization of SnB8O11(OH)4 is based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, vibrational spectroscopy, DFT calculations, and thermoanalytical investigations including high temperature powder XRD.

Cationic surfactants, such as quaternary ammonium cations, have been used, in order to ameliorate the oil sorption capacity of inorganics materials, such as clays. Clays modified with quaternary ammonium cations (organoclays) have better performance in sorption, remove oil and grease from water at seven times the rate of activated carbon, as well as they can be used like perforation fluids of oil wells to the oil base, lubricants, among others industries. This work aims characterize the Cloisite 30B using various techniques: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Specific Surface Area (BET) and Cation Exchange Capacity. Different organic solvents, namely gasoline, diesel and kerosene were used in order to investigate the clays compatibility after orgophilization.

The State of Paraíba has gained prominence in the production of raw bentonite in Brazil, where a new deposit has been found in the town of Sossego-PB, besides the deposit in the town of Boa Vista-PB. With the raise in the demand, the traditional reserves are depleting after several years of exploration, and this fact may result in a higher dependence on imported clays, thus existing a great interest in the discovery and characterization of new deposits, also guaranteeing technological improvements for the region. So, the objective of this work is to characterize the new deposits of the State of Paraíba, aiming at analyzing the characteristics the prove their classification as smectitic clays. The characterization was made through the analysis of chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and thermal differential analyses (TG and DTA), cation-exchange capacity (CEC) and specific area (SA). The results prove that the studied samples presented, in their mineralogical composition, smectite, kaolinite and quartz, besides thermal and chemical behavior typical smectitic clays.

Used in various branches of the industry, bentonitic clays are considered a valuable mineral, used specially in the petroleum industry for manufacturing of fluids used the drilling of petroleum wells in long depth. Recently, a deposit of this valuable mineral was discovered in the town of Olivedos-PB. There are data that prove that this is a very poor and underdeveloped town. So, this work aims at the physico-mineralogical characterization of clays recently discovered and, this way, verify if they present similar characteristics which allow them to replace the clays from Boa Vista-PB, and if they can be used by the industry, thus bringing social development for that town. The characterization was made by means of the analysis of chemical composition by X-ray fluorescence (EDX), thermogravimetric and thermal differential analyses (TG and DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cation-exchange capacity (CEC) and specific area (SA). The results show that the clays recently discovered in Olivedos-PB are polycationic clays, presenting MgO, CaO and K2O content, and that they are constituted by smectitic clay mineral, by quartz and kaolinite.

Nickel complex [Ni(1-MeIm)6(BF4)2, 1-MeIm = 1-methylimidazole] has been prepared in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim]BF4) ionic liquid by a simple solution phase method. The complex was characterized by elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared absorption spectroscopy (IR) and thermal analysis. SEM image indicates that the complex is irregular platelets with an uneven thickness in nanometer scale and variable transverse and longitudinal size, from 0.6 to 4 μm.

In this study, hydroxyapatite and Zn-containing hydroxyapatite coatings were produced and characterized with respect to adhesion. The coating technique consists of a two-step hydrothermal process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that, in the first step, the coatings consisted of parascholzite (JCPDS-01-086-2372), a mixture of parascholzite and monetite (JCPDS-01-071-1759), or parascholzite and brushite (JCPDS-72-0713), depending on Zn concentration in the precursor solution. The second step consisted of an alkali conversion in a KOH solution. The final coating was identified as pure hydroxyapatite (HA) or Zn-doped hydroxyapatite, depending on the precursor solution Zn content. Scratch tests on the pure HA coatings showed higher adhesion, when compared to Zn-substituted HA coatings.

Fe3O4/Mg-Al-NO3-hydrotalcite composite compounds have been synthesized by hydrothermal process followed by calcination to learn the differences in physical and chemical properties of each compound. Hydrothermal was performed at a temperature of 120 °C for 5 h and calcinations was at 450 °C for 3 hours. Characterization of the composite compounds was conducted using the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The characterization results showed that crystallinity, surface area and magnetic properties of hydrothermally treated Mg/Al hydrotalcite-magnetite were higher than those unhydrothermal and calcination products.

SrMoO4hierarchical nanostructures were successfully produced by a one step of 270 W microwave-hydrothermal process of one of the solutions containing three strontium salts [Sr(NO3)2, Sr(CH3CO2)2, and SrCl2·6H2O] and (NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O for different lengths of time. The as-produced products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and spectroscopy. In this research, they were primitive tetragonal structured donut-like SrMoO4, with the main 881cm−1  ν1(Ag)symmetric stretching vibration mode of[MoO4]2−units and 3.92 eV energy gap.
